NO ZONE: How Much Of A Disability Is It To Weber?

Coaches know before they play us exactly how we are going to defend. Stew implemented his new 1-1-3 (Old UNLV Amoeba Zone) in the off season, and it helped them @ Illinois St. as well.

Aren't we at a big disadvantage taking away this option?
We have the Atheletes, why not? Could be fun.

TwoFold - If you have some zone defenses in your back pocket that you are actively implementing/practicing, that also means your Offense is able to see it often in practice.

I never thought I would see another game that so closely resembled the infamous Tourney Championship against UM/Tinkle/AJ, in my Life.

What is funny is that the few times Stew tried the Amoeba Zone in the first half the Cats were able to beat it and get a bucket, which forced him to go to man. In man, against our athleticism, Stew's crew couldn't touch us. I don't understand what happened in the second half. Suddenly all the first half confidence was gone and the Cats could do nothing to get into an offensive flow. What was worse was the fact that Stew figured out, quickly, how to beat our man defense and totally punished the Cats. If Rahe would have used a zone on Stew, it would have completely thrown the Aggies off and slowed them down. Hell it would have pushed Collette out of the middle and made him beat us from outside.

But agreed!! Why the hell can't the Cats ever beat a Zone? It seems like year after year the Cats are killed by the zone. Our man defense wasn't working after halftime on Friday. Change it up!! Really sad to see that Rahe won't run multiple defenses.

Seemed to me that as soon as a few shots were missed in the 2nd half, including FTs with the student section behind the basket, Weber lost all confidence in their shot. As for everything else that collapsed as well, ya got me. It ticks me off that Weber State will not try to alter the DEC seating arrangement to try and give a similar advantage to the team that so many other schools enjoy. Ultimately, it might not have been the game changer but it was certainly a part of it. Compare the first and second half FT% if you doubt it.

The zone I was first staring at in the 2nd half from behind the basket on the Aggie bench end was positioned as a 1-3-1 as Weber went up the floor. I can't state that's what it indeed was but that's how the USU players were positioned several times as Weber was bringing the ball up court.

Not that it matters, but that's indeed what Stew called in the post game on radio.

Ron A called that zone the 'Monster' zone. He used it when the other team had one or more bigs that we were not able to handle one on one. He would use match-up and trapping zones to stifle superior guards. If a team started to figure out how to attack a certain defense, he would change it up to keep them off balance. He didn't change from man to zone near as often as McCarthy. He would change on missed or made shots. :coffee:
