Noise Makers

During the UM game, I was denied entry because of a little cowbell I purchased at the bookstore last year. Apparently there is a new restriction against noise makers? Does anyone know more about this?

Didn't matter, however. I am an organic noise maker and will cheer until my throat collapses.

My wife (ewumomma) got her cowbell in... :D
Not one of the small ones either, a big black one with a handle from the local farm supply store. By the end of the game, we had popped the welds and it wasn't ringing properly!
Great first home game for us to attend!!!!

I think artificial noisemakers (except band) are supposed to be illegal for all NCAA events. Whether or not you get stuff can depend on who's checking at the gate.

I think this is still current info, but I did notice that on the game day list of prohibited items on goeags.com they listed artificial noisemakers (so that may be why they told the original poster they couldn't bring in a little bell):

Here is Jon Kasper's (Assistant Commissioner of Big Sky Conference) 2011 response on the use of noisemakers at football games:

"The NCAA rules only apply to the postseason and are loosely enforced at best. (Just my experience as numerous playoff games across the nation).

The NCAA does not have an artificial noisemaker rule for regular-season football (Cowbells at Miss. State is an SEC issue, and certain conferences have rules about noisemakers at football).

The Big Sky Conference does not have an artificial noisemaker rule, so cowbells at Montana State, the soccer horns at Idaho State, keys at Northern Arizona are all legal be NCAA and Big Sky rules.

The two things that aren’t included in this are the can air horns and whistles. Those are banned by NCAA rules because whistles are used by officials and the air horns are sometimes used for official horns or buzzers.

If fans are using either whistles or the canned air horns, game management is supposed to remove the objects. If it persists, a penalty could be called.

There are guidelines for bands and canned music. That can’t be playing once a team breaks the huddle. By rule, if a team is running a no-huddle, then there should be no canned music or bands playing at all between plays. However, that is something that game management has issues controlling all of the time. Again, if the problem were to continue, it could lead to a penalty. PA announcers are not supposed to be making announcements during the action, or once teams break the huddle.

Just so you know, there are NCAA and Big Sky rules regarding artificial noisemakers as basketball, volleyball and other indoor events. The rules just don’t pertain to football."
