Non BSC Big Games

MVC -- NDSU @ Youngstown Nov 16th this one will be for all the marbles. Identical offensive stats, Youngstown much better turnover margin, NDSU #1 defense. Hard to root for a team that insists on using an offbeat pronunciation BIZON instead of BISON. Must be the extreme winter cold.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/bison

CAA -- Maine gets a pass on Towson and plays New Hampshire to close out the season on Nov 23rd.

Ohio Valley -- Eastern Illinois cruises to conference championship after beating #2 team Tennessee State last week. Haven't seen any of their games but wish I had. Offensive fire power out the kazoo.

Southland -- Southeastern La. @ McNeese Nov 2nd. Southland conference title on line this week. hard to say who comes out of this one on top, if Southeastern, they still have to face SHSU in two weeks. Should McNeese prevail, their path is easier.

Saw 4 Delaware games when we won NC in 2010 and knew Bo could bring us back from 0 -19 deficit as Keeler always packed it in with a lead all season and we had just missed on several big plays. Chills seeing Brown catch the lob pass for 30 plus that started the comeback and no words for Kaufman's performance. Awesome!

Avoid BSC myopathy, know the competition. Any other interesting games? Post here. :-)

I have no idea what to expect from the MVC, except last year I figured Youngstown to be legit after starting the year well only to see them get manhandled by NDSU and fall apart. Since the DNA couldn't have changed THAT much since then, I'll take the BiSons.

I've seen EIU play and they are quite good, probably right on par with Eastern or the other top-tier FCS teams. The hard part for them is potential general apathy from playing in a garbage conference. Remember, the OVC has a horrendous playoff record...

I'm not buying the CAA anymore. Without all the top teams in that league maintaining power, I just think it's slid down the totem pole. I doubt anyone can come out of that conference and be competitive with the top of the Big Sky; same goes with the SoCon. Both were the dominant FCS conferences 5 years ago but have lost a LOT of ground with defections.

I suspect McNeese is really good, but haven't seen them play except one time. I have no idea what to make of Sam Houston State; their style is absolute kryptonite to Eastern, and they were even better than the 15 point margin they hung on us in September. But I don't think that is so much a reflection of how good they are as it is how bad we match up with that kind of team. I'll take McNeese to win the Southland and the Bearkats second, with everyone else distant.

I really hope that Youngstown kicks the Bizun's asses.

I hope so, too. But Youngstown is the question mark, and the BiSons are a known commodity. And they are really, really, good. Given the way NDSU manhandled them last year, and have an almost identical roster this year, it's hard to believe Youngstwn would have closed a gap that large.

Good insight on both these posts. EIU almost beat San Diego State as badly as McNeese beat USF. EIU also beat SIU, ISUr, and nearly beat #17 NIU so they're definitely not your fathers OVC front runner.

Supposedly, Mcneese was literally pulling starters in the 3rd quarter against USF. I don't know what happened to them at Northern Iowa.

I'll throw in the Coastal Carolina @ Chuck South game in a couple of weeks. Sure it's the Big South but they've been beating up pretty bad on Southern Conference teams, and although I haven't seen them play, word on the street is Coastal (averaging 52 points/game over their last 6) is perhaps better than the other bottom tier conference upstart...Fordham.

Speaking of the Rams, they've been making waves this season, but I'm not sold as their marquee wins are Temple (lost to Idaho) and Nova who is mid-pack CAA. But they evidently have an all-world QB in Michael Nebrich.

Gotta take care of business, but I'll agree with Dopa on the SHSU match-up. I'd rather see us face NDSU than the beercats.

Yeah, I'm not sold on Coastal Carolina. They are probably good, but my guess is they get rolled by the first power conference team they play. Juat kinda hard for me to take any Big South team seriously.

Agree with Dopa about the SoCon, they just aren't that good this season. Samford has done a nice job recruiting the past couple or years and may attain a Woffordesque stature in the coming years of being a tough out.

Still believe the CAA is pretty tough even though showing signs of inconsistency this season. Wouldn't want to face Towson early in the playoff's as they have solid defense and good to great pass defense with an eleventh ranked offense. Just think they are the class of the CAA, too bad Maine gets a pass.

Totally agree about rather facing NDSU in the playoff's versus SHSU, sort of a pick your poison that sounds ludicrous when you look at NDSU's stats. We match up better with NDSU but will have to figure out how to stop Bell et. al. eventually.

Not sure what to think about Coastal Carolina, their stats are almost identical on both sides of the ball to EWU, but schedule isn't that strong. Pretender. With the loss of Stony Brook, the Big South is very second tier. Did I just say that? :-)

Ranger, off topic a bit but this is the first time I've seen your GIF. I think the most impressive thing is not the tackle, but how he absolutely rag-dolls the guard to make that play. He's a beast.

Good point. He absolutely blows that guy up.

Update:

Southeastern LA killed McNeese 41-7, SHSU left on their schedule. Towson lost a last second game to Delaware. Eastern Ill cruised ( I didn't think they looked that awesome, did have speed on the field and QB expects to win).

McNeese getting blasted completely caught me off-guard. I thought McNeese was the real deal, and SE Louisiana has been an also-ran for what seems like decades... I sort of just figured when the rubber met the road, McNeese would be a lot better.

Think about this, had Sam Houston got beaten by SFA this week instead of winning by 7, they'd be out of the playoffs with a loss to SE Louie. Is the Southland that good, or are the teams just wildly inconsistent?

The Southland is currently the best it's been in quite a while. SELA is legit, McNeese is Jekyll and Hyde, and SHSU seems to be shaky going down the stretch. SELA destroyed SFA 56-14, was down only 3 at the half against TCU, who is currently ranked #24, and beat a good Samford team on the road, in addition their beatdown of McNugget yesterday. They are a team I wouldn't want to play in the post season.

Nice observations 174. SE La took me off guard, but when you look at the totality of their schedule and the wins on it, they are obviously a good team. Just realized this is where Bryan Benett from Oregon landed. He is a tremendous athlete, that is probably nearly impossible to bring down. Hope they put SHSU down for the count.
