North Dakota Game

UND is a little bit of an enigma. They were a very mediocre early in the season, but have improved dramatically since the return of Troy Huff. He is their leading rebounder since his return and is one of the leading scorers. They lost their first BSC game at home to the same UNC team that we just beat by 25. However, last night they beat ISU by 13, at ISU. I'm not saying that ISU is a great team, but as we know, any road win in the BSC is hard. Too early to tell, but UND could be in the top 5 of the BSC.

Looks to me like we play them exactly like we just played UNC. :coffee:

Troy Huff adds a whole new dynamic to UND. He is their star and the glue that holds the team together. After him the Fighting Sioux really don't have too much. They have really struggled since Huff went down. Not to say he is the only key to their team, but he is their QB and without him the other players seemed lost on the court. With him back, the Sioux are a far better team. Are they good enough to beat Weber at the Dee? Not likely, but the Cats can't overlook UND and assume this game will be a pushover. Also, the Cats don't want to give the Sioux any sort of confidence when we play them at their place.

It's the first ever game between the two schools, and I think it's gonna be a good one.

Hopefully some people show up for this one, but I am not getting my hopes up

I was really dissapointed in the turnout last night. I wasn't expecting a sell out, but the Dee was pretty empty. Maybe it was the really cold weather. At least the band was there. ha ha. Anyway, about the North Dakota game. Looking them over I just dont see Weber winning by less than 20 as long as we show up with the same defensive intensity that we did againt UNC. Remember UNC beat North Dakota in North Dakota last week and we just absolutely manhandled the bears last night. You never know, but the team looks really focused right now. We are fun to watch and we can get even better I think. I have seen North Dakota a couple times this year. Their big guys are slow and pretty benglehaterish and their gaurds are average at best. Huff is the only guy that would even play if he was on our team and I wouldn't trade him for any of our starters. Not even close. So as long as we come out focused which I have no doubt we will then Weber State rolls big time. Im saying 84 to 59.

I have to be honest, I didn't even realize that U of North Dakota even had a basketball team. Apparently on SiouxSports.com fan board they don't realize it either since it is the 4th option on the fan board.
1st: Men's Hockey-makes sense
2nd: Womens Hockey- :wtf:
3rd: Football
4th: Men's Basketball
:wall: :wall: :wall:
Good hell the big Sky is BAD! I miss the days of Boise, Nevada, Idaho etc.. in the Big Sky. Sure beats the UNC & Canada teams.
Anyways, WSU rolls in this one.

The wheels have kind of fallen off on the first half of our season. We've been playing a bit better of late since Huff came back. Problem now though is that our two most talented big men are out now. Brekke is has been concussed for several weeks, and Traylor is academically ineligible for the rest of the season.

The Sioux are a hard team to wrap your head around. Excellent talent across our entire junior class, but they lose focus and play undisciplined all too often. We rarely win on the road. Weber should proably handle North Dakota, but I wouldn't be surprised if we made a game of it either. You just never know which team is gonna show up for us.................

bincity,

thanks for the post. i really know nothing about und, its bball, or its facilities. i hope und will be a good addition to the sky and not a regular 300 rpi like suu usually is. this yr sucks real bad as a big sky fan overall to see the majority of the teams sitting at 250 rpi or worse. i realize weber is no duke but our program works hard to try and be a top 100 team and we have a good fan base that comes to games despite our complaints for the types of crowds we know our program deserves.

looking forward to the first ever meeting with und though.

Just a little background info:

UND is the largest University in North Dakota with about 15,000 students. In the 90's the men's program was one of the better ones in Division II, making it to the Elite 8 a couple of times. Back in those days, the team played to home crowds of 4,000-5,000. The last 10-12 years haven't been as kind. We kind of limped out of DII with an average at best team. We come from the same DII conference that Northern Colorado played in before they jumped up to the Big Sky.

We did win our conference tournament each of the last two seasons, albeit the worst conference in basketball. As a result there had been alot of optimism heading into this season, as I said, our junior class has some of the best talent we have seen in years for our program.

We play in a beautiful 3,300 seat arena that was built in 2004. Currently drawing only between 1,500 and 2,000 fans the last couple years, but the hope is that interest will grow again with some success and now that we have affiliation with a reputable conference.

Troy Huff, a 6'4" guard, is our best player. He is uber-athletic and capable of scoring in bunches. He's also a bit reckless at times. So far, he's only played in 4 games as he broke his jaw in the opener and is coming back from that. Another guy of ours to look out for is Aaron Anderson. He's a little guy, at 5'9" but is our best shooter. He and Huff have been our best scorers the last two + seasons.

Looking forward to all the future match-ups with Weber.

Yikes!! I didnt know both of your bigs were out. That was the biggest issue in the previous couple of seasons for the Sioux. I heard that the JRs were pretty good, but that they needed some bigs to make them a complete team. Makes it hard to be successful if you don't have much in the paint. I know that there were a number of Sioux fans that were really looking forward to the future when Huff was a Freshman, but that has kinda diminished over the past couple of years. Not 100% sure though, but from what I knew, if the Sioux had some bigs they'd be pretty dangerous.

bincity,

thanks. did not know ur facility was fairly new. i will have to look it up.

as for your short guard keep in mind the 2008 and 2009 big sky mvp's were both basketball midgets! both were 5'6" :)

2008-09 Kellen McCoy, Weber State
2007-08 Jeremiah Dominguez, PSU

Brandon Brekke, our post-player that is dealing with concussion symptoms, is part of that junior class of ours that has been hyped up alot. He averaged 9 points and 6 rebounds last season. He can be quite good, and is really the only proven post player we have on the roster with offensive skills. IMO, playing an extended amount of time without him is nearly as bad as playing without Huff. The Traylor kid is a JC transfer that had played well also up to this point. He was a nice compliment to Brekke and added much needed depth. We do have a 6'11" senior, Mitch Wilmer, who has done an exceptional job in expanded minutes playing for the other two. Despite his size, though he is not nearly the rebounder that Brekke and Traylor are.

We brought in 3 bigs as transfers in the off-season to compliment Brekke, but none of them are playing now. One red-shirted, one is academically ineligible, and the other transferred in from Texas Tech and has to sit out a year, as his waiver was denied.

Like I said, the wheels have sort of come off on this season................

Hey bincitysioux you making the trip?

Looking forward to the game tomorrow. I like the new paint scheme on your court, I remember watching your game against Montana last year, I dont really know which players you lost, but last year it seemed like you guys played an up-tempo kind of game. Is that the style you guys play this year?

Someday I'd love to see the Dee and the environment at a Weber game, but no I won't be there this time.

As far as our playing style, yeah, we like to run and try to get into transition when we can. In the half-court, they run a motion-type offense, that is ultra heavy on ball-screens. Huff and Anderson like to slash to the basket alot. Huff tries to get to the rim, and Anderson tries to get to the charity stripe. We are not all that good at sharing the ball though.

We play pretty decent defense. Huff is an exceptional defender, as is our point guard Jamal Webb. I believe Webb is leading the conference in steals.

Should be a good one, we like playing the up-tempo game, our players LOVE to run. Could be a high scoring game, and definetely more exciting than last nights game vs UNC.

Dont be a stranger bincitysioux.

In whose eyes? ;-) :-(

I'm looking forward to it. Like I said, I wouldn't be shocked if the Sioux made it interesting, but it wouldn't surprise me at all either if we lose by 25+.................

Come on over to SiouxSports.com if you get a chance. Lot's of hockey talk, but there are a number of us basketball fans hanging out there too!

Actually I am already a member, by the same Name too :thumb: Nothing wrong with Hockey talk, every school has that one sport that they are best at, whether it be hockey, football, basetball or in some cases Track and field, see us for example, suck at everything but Mens basketball :thumb:

Wildcat, just want to be sure you are saying that Weber's track and field teams (actually the cross country teams) are the best sports teams at WSU - and not that Weber is good at basketball (men's) and sucks at everything else. The women's cross country team won the Big Sky and the Mtn Regional this year and was ranked in the top 20 in the country.

Was actually just trying to make a jab at our football and womens hoops teams

I love seeing new forum members from other teams. Especially classy ones like bincity. Welcome. :thumb:
As for Weber being a 1 dimensional sport school...hey, we have decent hockey. As soon as I get well, hockey is one sport I would love to add images to for our site. I think CatCat would love something new and I personally LOVE hockey!

I am excited to see how UND plays against you guys tonight. Unfortunately I do not believe I will be able to watch much of the game though because I have to watch the Minnesota Vikings game!
