Northern Colorado @ #5 Hornets

Dot's production has been increasing as the season has gone on. Looks like the Bears are learning how to utilize his talent in both the pass and rush attacks.

As much as I love Dot, I'm sure hoping the Hornets defense is up to the challenge of shutting him down, along with Dylan McCaffrey.

And maybe, just maybe, Coach Taylor will feel the urge to feature both Skat and Fulcher a bit more this weekend....and some Tau-Tolliver for good measure.

Week 6 - #4 Sac State vs Northern Colorado

The 4th ranked Hornets (4-0, 1-0 BSC) are finally home and face off against an improving Northern Colorado (2-3, 1-1 BSC). The Bears have seen some steady improvement as the season has progressed and rebounded from an 0-2 start. Prior to a tough 35-55 road loss at a much improved Idaho last week, the Bears won back to back games at Lamar, 21-14, and opened BSC play with a win at home against Idaho State, 35-14.

Offensively, UNC runs the standard run-pass option from the shotgun that slightly favors the pass over the run (53-47 percentage of pass to run). Due to injury, both quarterbacks have seen a significant amount of time, however the past few games Dylan McCaffrey (59/88, 711 yds, 5 TD, 3 INT) got the nod. The main playmaker at receiver is Trevis Graham (17 rec, 277 yds, 3 TD) but three other players have at least 17 receptions on the year. The passing game does like to check down to a running back quite a bit. With that said, the Bears offense is centered around a familiar face in Elijah Dotson (83 car, 303 yds, 2 TD, 20 rec, 166 yds, 2 TD) who accounts for almost 30% (103 total) of the touches for this offense (not including punt and kick returns). Dotson no doubt had this game circled on the calendar once he arrived at UNC.

Offensive Team Stats
  • Points scored per game: 27.0 (6th BSC)
  • Total Offense: 349.4 ypg (87.0 rushing ypg / 262.4 passing ypg) (11th/3rd BSC)
  • Turnovers: 5/8 (INT/Fum)
  • Redzone: 14/18 - 13/1 (TD/FG)

UNC’s defense lines up in a 3-4 and looked to be tightening things up until last week's game but they have had their struggles on the season. This defense has the least amount of sacks (4) in the BSC. Outside linebacker Elijah Anderson-Taylor (49 tkl, 1 TFL) leads the team in tackles while five other players have at least 28 tackles.

Defensive Team Stats
  • Points allowed per game: 32.4 (8th BSC)
  • Total Defense: 417.4 ypg (195.2 rushing ypg / 222.2 passing ypg) (10th/7th BSC)
  • Turnovers Forced: 4/4 (INT/Fum)
  • Redzone: 13/15 - 8/5 (TD/FG)

The Bears special teams have had their moments on the season. Dotson returns kickoffs and punts and took a punt return to the house against Idaho State. Kicker Hunter Green (1/4 FG, 16/17 PAT) has struggled with field goals while punter Devin Bale (18 punts) is having a solid year as he has a long of 52 yards and 6 pinned inside the 20.

Hornet Team Stats
  • Points scored per game: 45.8 (1st BSC)
  • Points allowed per game: 21.3 (3rd BSC)
  • Total Offense: 493.0 ypg (233.8 rushing ypg / 259.3 passing ypg) (2nd/4th BSC)
  • Total Defense: 405.5 ypg (96.8 rushing ypg / 308.8 passing ypg) (3rd/12th BSC)
  • Turnovers: 3/1 (INT/Fum)
  • Turnovers Forced: 5/3 (INT/Fum)
  • Redzone Offense: 20/23 - 17/3 (TD/FG)
  • Redzone Defense: 10/13 - 7/3 (TD/FG)

The big story line for this game is Dotson’s return, and I have to believe the Hornets didn’t forget about the way he quit on this program last season. Dotson is UNC’s go to guy so there is no doubt the Hornet defense will dial something up to keep him in check. UNC has allowed the most sacks (16) in the BSC so if there is ever a game where the Hornet defensive front can get pressure, it’s this one. UNC has some talent on the offensive side of the ball so they may keep things interesting for a bit, however on the other side of the ball they are lacking too much up front to slow down this potent Hornet offense. The Hornets should come out and roll this UNC team on its way to a 5-0 start.

At this point Dotson is a solid back starting for a very average football team. I can't imagine that every team we face the rest of the season won't have a back at least as good. If we were playing a team with Skattebo in the backfield I would be concerned.

UNC is really playing up Dotson's return. Bet he is 80% of their offense. Dump passes will be the main threat. Along with the deep ball every once and again to keep us honest.

I saw this too, and he’s active on social media again, eating it up. If the Hornets let him have his way and lose this game, it would be extremely disconcerting.

A lot has been said about McCaffrey's coaching style... Keeping his starters in down 48-7 in the fourth in a game is confounding.

It's over. Hornets win 55-7. Given the lackluster play at the top of the rankings (not to mention a bye) look for some shifting around.

It looks like balanced offense won this game for us. Sure, we had more yardage on the ground, but when you get beyond Skattebo doing his usual yeoman job (18-124-1TD), we had two other rushers contributing more than 50 (including O'Hara with 11-57-1TD). Two other backs scored on the ground, including Fulcher with a pair. Dunniway dominated in the air with 20-28-258-2 TD, and O'Hara and Bennett were .500. I like how our QBs spread the ball around, hitting ten different receivers on the night. Martin was his usual huge self, nabbing 6 balls for 103 yards and a TD. Clayton grabbed another TD pass. We only punted twice, but got a decent 42 yard average. Twenty-nine defenders made the stat board, which is incredible, including Houlihan's five tackles, Broussard's pick, and Houlihan's forced fumble, which was apparently recovered by Ross. I'm disappointed that we allowed Dotson into the end zone, but on the other hand, we held him to 50 yards, which was nice. Nobody else got anything going on the ground for UNC, as they only got 72 yards. We kept QB McCaffrey in check, as he only threw for 103 yards and a pick on less than 50% passing. The biggest team stat, for me, was first downs, where we dominated 37-9. Also, to be +447 total yards is a pretty good night.

Overall, I'm very impressed. I can't wait to meet EWU next week. That COULD be a trap game, as they'll be p!$$ed off that they've lost winnable games, but I think we'll take care of them quite handily.

Congrats for being able to read a box score and write sentences about it. Did you learn that in the QB room?

Looks like 11,013 made the game, if we take down EWU on the road, anything less than 15,000 for UM and IU will be disappointments.

It feels like it's a contest to see who says "trap game" first like somehow that exudes deep, profound insight. Eastern Washington has legitimate talent on both sides of the ball and unlike Colorado State, Cal Poly and Northern Colorado they are good enough to beat us if we don't play well.

We’re only used to saying that about other teams playing US. still figuring out the trap game appropriateness.

Agree with you though. EWU will fall out of the top 25 this week, but they are on “The Inferno” and can still drop 45 in the blink of an eye. They’ve had an insane schedule, so 1-4 is about as misleading as could be!
