Northern Colorado @ #5 Hornets

A lot has been said about McCaffrey's coaching style... Keeping his starters in down 48-7 in the fourth in a game is confounding.

My wife and I attended the game yesterday and I pointed the above out to her. Utterly ridiculous.

I say it all the time with regard to the NFL and college ball. I can’t take these entities seriously when they preach “player safety” yet do things like this all the damned time.

I’ve seen NFL teams up 35 points and having their starting QB in the game in the 4th quarter. The Steelers do crap like that all the time. The Chargers just did it a couple weeks ago down 28 with under 5 remaining. But at least those are professionals. There’s no excuse for it in college or HS IMO.

Looks like 11,013 made the game, if we take down EWU on the road, anything less than 15,000 for UM and IU will be disappointments.

I was quite a bit off. Just from eyeballing the stands I figured 8-10K.

Glad to read that it was more than that. Fun atmosphere, regardless.

Re: the actual game, it was a tad worrisome in the beginning. Two turnovers on downs then a punt. But next thing you know, we were up 24-0 going into half.

Dunniway was erratic early on. He was indecisive and had, what, 4-5 passes batted down near the LOS?
But he settled in as the game went along and the rush attack set the tone.

Defense was sound all game. The only score UNC managed came off Chris Miller’s fumble deep in Hornet territory. They couldn’t muster a drive otherwise.

UNC may not be very good, but still a solid, solid win as far as I’m concerned. Especially playing at home for the first time in over a month and not getting off to a good start offensively.

Some credit it due to UNC's defense early on. They were getting hands up in the passing lanes and clogging up the interior runs. The Hornet front just wore them down and eventually the Hornet offense found their groove.

I never thought this game would be close, but I also don't think UNC is as bad as we made them look last night. Hornets are just playing damn good football right now, very enjoyable to watch.

55-7 Hornet win. Total domination across the board as the coaches emptied the benches late in the 3rd quarter.

Hornets had a slow start offensively but eventually got rolling and racked up over 600 yards of offense. Credit to UNC defense for keeping it close for a quarter. Dunniway (20/28, 258 yds, 2 TD) was efficient once he found his groove and Skattebo (18 car, 124 yds, 1 TD) had another big night. Martin (6 rec, 103 yds, 1 TD) had a big 45 yard catch and run for a touchdown in the 3rd quarter that really blew the game wide open.

Defensively the Hornets put on a clinic. The Bears didn’t get a first down until 3 minutes into the 3rd quarter and their lone points came off of a turnover deep in Hornet territory. The Hornets also forced a couple of turnovers in this dominating performance.

Special teams remained on point. The ‘Ski’s were hitting the front corner of the endzone for a touchback on almost every kickoff, Sentkowski (7/7 PAT, 2/2 FG) was solid yet again and McGough landed both punts inside the 20.

The west grandstand was at or near capacity. I was hoping we'd get closer to 15k but hey, I'll take 11k against UNC. We need to clear 15k the rest of the way (UM, UI, Causeway) though, no reason for this city to not get behind this team.

Good showing against UNC, why doesnt the SacBee promote the program more? There are stand alone stories about every activity/event taking place in the city, but none on the home game of Sac State. If it were the Kings, River Cats, soccer team, bike race, balloon shuffle there would be a front page story. They sure like to promote their political ideologies but not Sac State?

Actually, that’s not true. There is a story posted about it.

https://www.sacbee.com/sports/article267051091.html

I’ve actually seen stories every week, usually by Joe Davidson but this latest one is by Cameron Salerno.

I will say that sometimes they can be a tad difficult to find when navigating through the SacBee website. But they are there.

It might be easier to just follow Joe D or Cameron’s social media feeds as they typically link their stories to their feeds.

That story is dated Oct. 9th, Sunday. After the fact.

I am talking about a story on Wednesday/Thursday to build weekend interest in attending the game.

Well, there was also an AP article posted on the 8th after the game.

And there was this article posted on Friday before the game: https://www.sacbee.com/sports/college/article266909896.html

That’s not to say that they cover the Hornets like the KINGS — which is understandable considering the KINGS are a professional team in a marquee sports league — but they do and have been covering the HORNETS program. They cover UCD too.

I’ve seen a noticeable uptick in coverage in recent years, especially since Troy Taylor took over the program and the winning ways began. Joe Davidson writes about the program often, not just for the SacBee, but on his social media as well. Cameron Salerno does a good job too.

Don’t take any of my comments to mean that I’m a big SacBee fan or anything, cause I’m not. That publication has rubbed me the wrong way many times over the years with their political agenda, but they are far from the only one.

Rather I’m just acknowledging the Sac State coverage.
