Tough, TOUGH loss. We were flat, shot horribly, got into foul trouble, and got killed on the offesive boards, especially in the second half. This kind of play, in the second game of a back-to-back, is evidently becoming a habit for us.
The thing is, we still could have easily won this game, if we were able to hit a couple of free throws, or another field goal. I've got to wonder if the recent lineup changes that were made are for the best. Our turnovers and defense might have improved but our firepower on offense was lacking in this game. Not to second guess the coach, but, Valentine and Marchant need minutes for us to be successful. Eleven and nineteen minutes respectively do not cut it, in my opinion. And, I think we should try to continue to give Wade her minutes, even though her foul trouble hampered her play, in this game.

The officiating was terrible last night. They let the rough play under the boards go, but then call hand checks out at the top. Ridiculous.

Poor first half shooting and a some pretty good play by that Cox girl did us in. :-(

It was tied at the half, and we settled for 3's down the stretch and got out-rebounded with Wade out. We had to play soft D due to foul trouble and yes ref's stunk, but I still think the girls are beat up, over-trained and need to back off hard practices at this point in the season if they have a hope of winning in the tournament. They are beat up physically and emotionally....eventually the yelling gets tuned out and kids give up, they are giving their all with injuries and fatigue - when that doesn't pay off with a win, it''s tough to keep your head in it not to mention your heart. Humiliating your kids with screaming diatribes in full view of fans and opponents really is counterproductive. The second game failures we have seen this season clearly point to overtraining...atheletes of this age group should have no problem playing games on successive nights. Shooting woes point to fatigued legs God knows they have the muscle memory to shoot, you have gotta have legs to make it go. I think they need to rest their bodies 2 days before these back to back games....old school coaching of "more is better" has been shown to be faulty thinking; get a clue, re-group rest and prepare mentally and physically to fight for what they deserve. The most important back to backs will be in the tournament and if this season's trend is any indicator, someone in charge better make a change to current training/practice regimens now.

So are you saying that 28% shooting in the first half is due to hard practices by the coaching staff? A lot of those misses were open shots that didn't go down. We should have had a double digit lead at the half.

On top of that, free throws were 34 to 10 in favor of UNC.

28% FG shooting plus -24 in FT shots equals a loss any day of the week.

I am saying they have no legs to shoot. period. Short shots, weak shots point to no legs, which as I said usually is a result of overtraining especially at this time of season. Free throws were the fault of officials, unless you are saying we didn't make ours which we shot 50% just didn't get any calls, there were plenty to be made on our behalf.....but you are absolutely right can't win with 28% shooting!

I agree that we looked fatigued in the second games of back-to-backs. We are slow getting back on defense and those small, quick opposition guards give us fits. I think when you put that together with a sharp drop off in shooting percentage in these second games, it points to dead legs from over-training. I think most coaches, who subscribe to modern training techniques, cut back on long, physical practices during this time of the season. Everyone is probably suffering from some sort of ache or injury of some kind and walk-through practices are a good way to heal up and replenish glycogen stores. The girls know what needs to be done at this point in the season, but their bodies probably need a little rest more than anything else.
I also agree that excessive yelling by the coach and public humiliation is not an effective form of motivation. The girls seem to be giving good effort, especially after some days off, and it must be frustrating to get ripped if one is playing hard and running the plays they are given. Negative reinforcement leads to apathy and you can't win many games if that is the predominating emotion on the team.
