I thought our VIKS gritted out a hard-fought win on a night when not a lot of our shots were falling. I think it's important for our team to feel confident that they can win in other ways besides shooting the three. There are going to be other games later in the year when the same thing happens. Samms return to form will bring an element on defense that we really need. I don't think it was a coincidence that Oosdyke was limited to 16 points in this game while in the first game, without Samms, she scored 28.
Finally, I think we are a well conditioned team and credit should go to our young ladies for wearing down their opponents again, as they have in the late moments of many games this year. The following quote from UNC's coach is telling, but also a tad disrespectful:
"I thought our team did a good job pressing in the second half," said Head Coach Jaime White. "I also thought we had some mental errors and at the same time, some fatigue a little bit. It was a winnable game and I think our team is as good, or better than Portland State. However, today they did what they needed to to get the win."
Hmmm, she makes it sound like our win was kind of a flukey thing; we didn't win it, they lost it, because of mental errors and fatigue. I guess we'll find out come March...
