I figured as much, when I saw last week that he was recruiting for another school. It may well be why they started recruiting the same kid we were going after, at about that same time. There are darn few ethics in recruiting. :coffee:

Hope we find a good OC. With the right scheme and better play calling, this could be a much improved team on offense.

Whom ever the new OC will be, they will work within the frame given them by Coach Hill. Jay likes to be predictable, predictably good, but predictable as far as establishing the run game, passing when needed, and throwing in a few tricks here and there to keep it fun for the kids and fans. I don't expect any of that to change. With that said, I think there could be room for less predictability in the kinds of running and passing plays. We need to be fundamentally sound, but a little misdirection can really mess with a defense. I think that was the biggest thing missing from our O over the past few years. Who ever the new OC is, they will have some excellent athletes to work with.

Can hardly wait for September. :notworthy: :notworthy:

Damnit! Hammer is the new OC. I sure hope he is better this time than last time.

:ohno: Well, I guess at worst it'll be like Schramm never left, or like Hammer never left the first time. I didn't think there was much difference between the two. At best, he grew and figured some things out at Weber High. He did have a few years of very good offensive teams there. I'm not sure if that had more to do with the kids playing at the time or not.

Give him a chance.

None of us are the same people we were ten years ago.

Like I said before, nothing happens independent of its environment.

My plan is to keep an optimistic, open mind. I believe he will do well.

Honestly, this is probably the selection I was hoping wouldn’t happen. I know Jay rewards coaching staff, but it is a retread, and those don’t work out a lot of the time.

It would have been nice to know the names of the ten people who called just to see the level of talent Weber State is drawing these days...but maybe it’s better not to know now.

Here’s hoping Hammer has learned a bit and will run a more dynamic offense. I will keep an open mind. Now it will be interesting to see what QB is the starter. I can’t wait for football!

I half expected this but not sure what the hurry was. Would have liked to have seen more of a search. Hammer's previous stint as OC wasn't terrible, but wasn't great either. Had some good talent his first few seasons, which helped a lot. His last season under Sears was really bad, but then what wasn't bad under Sears.

Just over two weeks before the first spring practice. I am sure they wanted to get an offensive scheme in place before then.

Man, didn't realize spring practice started that soon. Feels like the season just ended.

Just thought I would pull some statistics on Matt Hammer's previous stint as OC and compare them to Coach Schramm's offensive stats. I have also included the season immediately before and after Hammer was the OC for comparison purposes. Analysis will be in a follow up post.

Thanks for putting that together. 4.7 yards per play with the talent we had in 2018 is an abomination.

One note: QBs in 2013 were Adamcyzk and Chipoletti.

Some quick initial thoughts.

Hammers last year came post-Lucifer and the number of Coach Mac players run off in the spring was pretty high. Hammer's results that year probably reflect more on the offseason than what happened in season. The team absolutely quit playing and was outscored by an average of 25.6 points per game.

So the analysis of Hammer really comes down to three seasons and requires a look at his key personnel during those seasons ( 2009-2011).

Hammer's offenses averaged a respectable 418 yards per game and scored an average 28.4 points per game with all three years averaging above 5.6 yards per play. 3rd down conversion percentage trended downward each year starting at 46% and ending at 39%.

All of these stats seem to indicate an above average offense. So why do I and others remember Matt Hammer as a poor OC.

In 2008 the personnel group is largely the same, though in theory younger and less experienced. However statistically, this team was much better than Hammers teams were. They averaged more points per game and more yards per game, with a higher red zone scoring and touchdown percentage.

I am certain that offensive success is somewhat equally tied to talent at key positions and coaching scheme/play calling. With the same QB and similar talent at RB and WR, this team seemed to get progressively worse each year under Hammer's control. While they were not terrible until the final year, they also did not appear to improve either.

While Hammer was the OC, I was present at every home game and watched as many road games as possible. The plays that haunt me are all eerily similar running plays on 3rd or 4th and 5+ yards in the red zone where Weber was stopped for little or no gain. This is where I hope Hammer has improved.

I am optimistic that 10 years of coaching has changed Matt Hammer for the better. I do believe he is capable of creating an offense that can be successful as long as he has the personnel and makes adjustments to his decision making.

Schramms offense was bad. Maybe the scheme, maybe the QB, but the offense was terrible to watch and statistics reflect that. Schramm was truly inept, he may not have had the right system or the right QB, but regardless of the causes, it was not working. Hammer looks pretty good by comparison.
