Offense vs. defense

Maybe I'm missing something but it sure seems like I don't understand what a good defense is anymore.
For example, how can we have two defensive player of the week awards yet have a bad defense?
Are the offenses really that good through the conference? Are they opportunistic? Is it just the nature of the no huddle offense to put up yards and points?
Here is what I think it is. The defensive coordinators. I have never seen a team where the coach has made such a difference as our defense coordinator this year. IMHO he has earned his paycheck, maybe even a raise.
If someone can shed some light on the subject I'd love to hear it. Cause I can't figure out what it would take to categorize our defense, as a unit, as "good".

I think during games we all get overly critical and excited especially in close shootouts and it's easy to try and lay blame when things don't go our way. In all honesty we actually know nothing to make those assumptions. We don't know the game plans, reads, if ailments are affecting someone, whatever it may be. Offense has their share of eggs also.

I think our D is far and away better than previous years and all thanks to Coach Coop. Especially our secondary, they have come up with some huge plays and turnovers.

Totally agree Tacoma5. I was at game vs PSU last Saturday night with my two cousins. One of my cousins kept saying “what’s wrong D coordinator. Doesn’t he have a game plan for this PSU qb.” I said “I don’t think it’s the d coordinator fault, I don’t think it’s a schematic problem. We are missing our two best D ends from a year ago (salutregi and Rasheed Williams), we just are at a mismatch athletically in the box vs that PSU qb. That happens sometimes. I thought cooper did make a good schematic adjustment in 4th qtr, we stopped pressuring qb up field in backfield and we started to just have d line kind of mirror him with a wall instead of pressure and that seemed to kind of work

First, not a fan of 3-4. Gives QB too much time to look at the field and creates great angles to the sidelines with lb.'s dropping deep into coverage. Our D had some successful and timely CB blitzes late in the game. Would like to see us hide our coverage on the interior more.

I get the feeling that there was another plan at the start of the season, but because of personnel loss that 3-4 was the backup. our run defense was pretty good to start the year but with a couple of these run heavy offenses we have not slowed them down much.
We really need some sort of edge rusher, that to me is much more valuable that blitzing DB's or disguising the coverage's. 17 sacks so far is better than last season but seems kinda low still...
I do think things will look even better next season.
