What do the EAGS need to do to get out of this offensive funk? I have some ideas.

Obviously I want to see ALL passes close to any receiver caught, not dropped, not bobbled but caught.

Next, I would like to see some dedication by our OC to run straight up the gut running plays with an Hback lead blocking. Use our big Oline and tight ends to establish some kind of consistent running game. No horizontal running! Straight through the hole and get HBacks and OL on the LBs and make the safeties stop you. Use our bigger backs, McPherson (hopefully he’s not too dinged up), Pierce and Kindle to establish a vertical running game! Use Custer on sweeps and in the flats. If we can establish any kind of a running game it will help Gubrud immensely.

With an effective running game the linebackers have to honor the run and can’t get into the middle field passing lanes as quickly. This opens up these middle field passing lanes (notice how wide open the TEs for NDSU were last Saturday). Now do a play action fake and roll Gubrud out putting pressure on the corners and linebackers to defend his running ability further opening passing lanes. When the corners and safeties try jumping the short and mid field routes do some curl and goes or out and ups for big plays.

The offensive unit’s confidence levels go sky high. Lineman and running backs are happy because they are blocking and running down hill. Gubrud is happy because he is using his athletic abilities efficiently both running and passing. The receivers are catching the ball and getting some YAC because the defense is spread laterally and vertically. Maybe most importantly our defense is happy because they are not on the field ¾ of the game.

Hey, lets try this against Fordham.

I am actually concerned with our runningback crew. Our offensive line was doing a decent job opening holes, but either they aren't being utilized well or they aren't fast/good enough to be utilized effectively.

Every running play, they hit the A and B gaps. They never tried to bounce to a different hole. Seldom sent to the C gaps or swing around into the flat. The one time I saw a runningback (don't remember which one) go to the outside and try and turn it up field, they were literally chased down by a defensive lineman. It just seems like we are really lacking speed, even though our runningbacks are relatively small.

GE, with you on this post. Perfect week to ground and pound. We have all the advantages and it will take all the pressure off the passing game. Here's wishing. Rjones has a point that our backs don't play with their eyes, albeit McPherson has shown he can and finds yards that our other backs aren't getting. I think this may be a byproduct of too few carries, so they press to hit a hole instead of seeing the opening. Go Eags!

Hey Golden,
I'm curious, do you think our coaches just fell off of the turnip truck?

We have so many new coaches on offense and I don’t know their backgrounds. I’m assuming at least one of them in the past fell off a turnip truck.

This is how I feel. I watch opposing running backs break tackles from our D every play. Every time one of our ball carriers is in a one-on-one they go down. I keep hearing how good these guys are in practice, but much like our receivers, it isn't tranlating to live games. It isn't rocket science; we need to make catches and break tackles.
