Offensive Coordinator Resigns

Offensive coordinator Ian Shoemaker resigned on Tuesday but no details were provided. I hope this is not a health issue, but if it is a function of how the offense is running, I have not been a fan of Shoemaker for the past 3 years.

Press release sites personnel issue - guessing he and Best may have had a difference of opinion on the reasons behind the back to back losses.
While the offense has put up fewer points over the last two games, you could also place blame on the D giving up over 500 yds resulting in 38 min TOP for MSU and the D giving up 3 crucial fake punts against Weber.

Strange. Speculation about vaccine refusal, etc. who knows? Seems untimely.
With vaccine refusal he should have been gone on October 18 per the state employee vaccine mandate.

Not going to take a victory lap, never wish anyone ill because of a game but I had some hope when he came to Eastern despite showing signs of lacking the ability to play call in tight or stressful games. Not sure what the disconnect was for him. I believe being a collegiate level coach is VERY difficult and the more responsibility one has (HC, DC, OC) adds to the complexities. Two inexplicable weeks back to back and a second half a WIU that defy all reason had to play a part in this decision.

Feels like addition by subtraction at the moment. Time will tell. Lots of unanswered questions. Guess we'll see how the team reacts to this news against UC Davis.

does shoemaker have some axe to grind with the team? it's starting to look like it's personal. whatever it is.

Coach McCann excerpts Here's hoping.

In addition, EWU's recruiting class in 2019 was ranked No. 1 in the Big Sky and No. 2 in FCS. Eastern finished the 2019 season 7-5 overall and 6-2 in the Big Sky to finish with at least five league wins for the 13th-straight season.

Formerly from Olympia, Wash., McCann came to EWU from Northern Iowa where he was wide receivers coach in 2017 and 2018. McCann, a 2009 graduate of Western Washington University, spent four previous seasons at EWU’s fellow Big Sky Conference member UC Davis.

Interestingly, McCann faced his former team (UCD) in 2018 while he was coaching UNI – with a twist. A family matter sidelined Panthers offensive coordinator John Bond at the end of the season, and McCann filled in. He debut calling plays came in a 37-0 win over Missouri State, then UNI edged Lamar 16-13 in the first round of the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision Playoffs.

However, the Panthers lost 23-16 to the UC Davis Aggies, who would go on to lose to Eastern 34-29 in the quarterfinals. Northern Iowa finished 7-6 in 2018 and were 8-5 in 2017.

Among the receivers he coached at UNI was first team All-Missouri Valley Football Conference selections Daurice Fountain, who was drafted in the fifth round in the 2018 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts. Deion McShane in 2018 and Isaiah Weston in 2017 both were named to the MVFC All-Newcomer squad and earned freshman All-America honors.

While receivers coach at UC Davis, McCann was integral in helping All-Big Sky second team selection Keelan Doss receive sophomore All-America honors from Hero Sports in 2016. McCann was also key in coaching Tom Hemmingsen, Ramon Vargas and Chris Martin to All-Big Sky honorable mention honors during his time with the Aggies.

Prior to his tenure at UC Davis, McCann served as the offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach at Stonehill College in Easton, Mass. He was also the special teams coordinator from 2011-12 and the wide receivers coach and video coordinator from 2009-2011. He developed all-conference wide receiver John Gomes in 2012 along with helping Gordon McLeod and Zaire Reiph earn all-rookie selections in 2011 and 2012.

Ian Shoemaker to fill U of Washington open offensive coordinator job! Earmarked to take Jimmy Lakes job which seems to be coming soon. Or not. Remember Best has OC experience (in name only so he could get a bump in pay) under Baldwin so we'll be ok. Someone passed that along to me so just passing it along.
*Just made that up cept part on Best being OC.

Found a short clip of UNI over Missouri State in 18 Looking for Stonehill 2012 when McCann was OC

https://www.kcrg.com/content/sports...h-37-0-win-over-Missouri-State-500763851.html

Found this stats page for 2012:
https://www.stonehillskyhawks.com/sports/fball/2012-13/teams/stonehill?view=profile

Stonehill finished its 2012 season with a 5-5 record overall, including a 5-3 clip in the Northeast-10 to mark the Skyhawks first winning season in Conference play since head coach Robert Talley’s first season in 2007. Stonehill was named the Northeast-10 “Team of the Year” by d2football.com, while Talley received the website’s Conference Coach of the Year and the Skyhawks’ nationally-televised matchup with No. 3 University of New Haven was labeled as blog’s NE-10 Game of the Year.

I suspect there were rumbling underlying, but I also wouldn't be shocked if it didn't come down to 4th and 4 with 2 minutes left.

In my mind Shoemaker dialed up a play and Best overruled with the punt. I'd rather let the offense lose the game 100 times out of 100 in the last 10 years, even on our own 10 yard line with 2 minutes left in the game.

I can't disagree with the punt at that point, the question is play calling that GOT us to 4th and 4? What happened on 3rd and 2? :ohno:

Very strange and I haven’t been able to find anything explaining this. It’d be very hard to imagine he’d resign after two poor offensive performances so there is definitely something else going on.

In our losses we were playing not to lose offensively and dailed back in WIU game that was almost embarrassing. Flush that crap down the toilet from here on in.

I suspect this is the case…and I agree with you 100%.

No way in hell do you punt in that situation. I have no idea what CAB was thinking. The finish was predictable. But, time to move on…

Jimmy lake is done..prolly...now they can fire him for just cause and not have to buy out that huge contract
