UNIVERSITY ANNOUNCES 2009 FOOTBALL SCHEDULE

3/6/2009

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A trip to Las Vegas, a renewal of an old rivalry and matchups against three NCAA Football Championship Series playoff participants highlight Sacramento State’s 2009 football schedule, which was announced today by Director of Athletics Terry Wanless.

The 11-game schedule begins on Sept. 5 when the Hornets travel to UNLV for their first meeting with the Rebels. UNLV ended 2008 with a 5-6 overall record, which included a win over Arizona State. The game marks the seventh consecutive season that the Hornets will face a Football Bowl Subdivision team and the second straight year against a squad from the Mountain West Conference. Last season, the Hornets fell at Colorado State, 23-20.

Sacramento State remains on the road the next week as the team will travel to San Luis Obispo, Calif., to take on Cal Poly for the first time since 2006. The Mustangs were ranked 10th in the final 2008 FCS poll by The Sports Network. The team posted an 8-3 mark during the year and advanced to the FCS playoffs.

Following a bye week, the Hornets will host Eastern Washington in their home opener on Sept. 26. The game against the Eagles, which will also mark the Big Sky Conference opener, will start at 6:05 p.m. Sacramento State returns to the road the following week with a contest at Portland State.

On Oct. 10, the Hornets will play their Homecoming game against Idaho State. Another road game, the fourth in the first six games, pits Sacramento State against FCS playoff participant Weber State on Oct. 17.

Back-to-back home games against Montana and Northern Colorado round out the month of October. The team welcomes the Grizzlies on Oct. 24. Montana was ranked second in the final FCS poll of the year after playing in the FCS championship game and ending the year with a 14-2 overall record.

Sacramento State concludes Big Sky play with road games at Northern Colorado (Nov. 7) and Montana State (Nov. 14).

The team’s final game of the year will come at home against UC Davis on Nov. 21 in the 56th-annual Causeway Classic. The Hornets defeated the Aggies, 29-19, last year at Aggie Stadium.

Sacramento State open its spring practice April 8. The annual Green-Gold game will take place on Sat., May 2. For season ticket information, call (916) 278-2222.

Great to see Cal Poly and Sac State play again. This is a game that should be played every year. See you down in SLO Sept. 12th.

I notice every game except one is a day game.

Is this a move by every school to cut cost? The lights use alot of juice $$$.

It might have something to do with the Big Sky Conference. I think last year almost all BSC games were held during the afternoon. Maybe Big Sky TV or to help with travel logistics?

Coach Sperbeck prefers day games...though he did see the benefit of playing the early games at night (the heat). It has nothing to do with saving money. Look, you start winning, and people will come no matter when the game is.

I am talking about the other team's home schedule. I know of Sperbeck's day fetish.

First, MSU and UNC don't have lights at their stadiums, so there's that. Definitely think the UNLV game is going to be at night...probably 8 pm is my guess. As for PSU and WSU, don't know the reasoning behind that. And for the game at Poly, it may be early September, but it gets cold at night in SLO, so the starting time of 4pm is perfect for me.

What are they thinking having the Causeway during the day!?!? Now when I come up for the game I am going to have to start drinking when I wake up, not that it hasn’t been done, I'm just saying. And I was planning on going to Vegas for the UNLV game, but if its a late start there is no way I will be making the game with all the other "attractions" the Strip has to offer.
Overall the schedule has an okay balance to it. With the back to back road games occurring twice, there are definitely some areas that can be potential pit falls. The first three conference games will be must-win games as they will then face Weber State and Montana in back to back games. The back to back road games in Northern Colorado and Montana State will be a concern given the time of year. But let's not take our eyes off the most important goal of every season, and this is kicking some aggie a$$. 8-)

Causeway has been in the day since 2004 to reduce the potential for fights. The last time it was at night in 2003, there were at least 3 fights that I saw that both campus police depts. had to break up. The report was people had been drinking all day long. Not that necessarily agree with it, but at that time of year, I want it in the daytime. Too cold at night the 3rd weekend in November.

Also, do you seriously think that UNLV is going to schedule a football game during the day in early September? So go to the Strip after the game. Last time I checked, Vegas is open 24/7. I know I will hit it after the game.

I might know the Answer to that, at least the Weber side of it.

1. Its colder in Northern Utah than it is in Sac
2. Alot of Weber's fanbase are fans from the other schools, BYU and Utah always play later in the day, so Weber will play earlier in hopes of getting a few more fans.

I think we'll see improvement this year, maybe not record wise... I look for a playoff caliber team in 2010 with Smith and Hilliard back together and Sperbecks original recruits completing their first 4 year cycle...

I think we'll ride homefield to big wins over UM and UCD... We usually suck at PSU, WSU, and MSU, so I can't predict victory there...

@UNLV - LOSS
@Cal Poly - LOSS
EASTERN WASHINGTON - WIN
@Portland State - LOSS
IDAHO STATE - WIN
@Weber State - LOSS
MONTANA - WIN
NORTHERN ARIZONA - WIN
@Northern Colorado - WIN
@Montana State - LOSS
UC DAVIS - WIN

Best Case
6-5 OVERALL (5-3 BSC)

Worst Case
4-7 OVERALL (3-5 BSC)

Wow, Poly loses practically everyone on offense and you predict we lose there?

Even the egrizers have more faith in the Hornets, they are half and half with Sac coming in 3rd or 4th in the BSC.

I see a good season, 7-4 (but as always Im hoping to go undefeated :o )

Losses to: UM, WSU, UNLV, PSU (All of these games, I believe, will be close)

Thank you SHA. Poly had a good year with a senior class and everyone writes-off our game with them this season. My only concern is that its a road game and they have a lot of their defensive starters returning. Other than that I have it at about a 60-40 chance of a Sac State win. Plus everyone also seems to forget that they replaced their HC. I doubt that the change will be completely seamless and that they will have everything worked out by their second game. :roll:

I'm looking at 10-1, no worse than 8-3. I'll bet you can guess who that one loss is against (and it's not the Manure Pile this time).

UNLV is winnable. Don't write off that game just because they're FBS. It's not as if they're B(C)$.

Given the personnel situation at Cow Poly, a Sac win there is VERY conceivable.

PSU has disappointed since the Hawai'i crew took over. Another Sac win.

I'm not thrilled with Weber's ability to beat Sac outside of the basketball court right now.

How can anyone take us to beat Montana but not the Kitties? That makes no sense. We've beaten the Kitties before, and there's nothing going on there to make me believe that it won't happen again.

In fact, the only game I see us losing IS Montana, and I'm not even convinced that that's a guarantee. We could be looking at my old Chuck-era predictions of 15-0. I admit that that's a bit optimistic and even sugar-coated, but it certainly looks good to me.

8-3 Would probably make us a playoff team SH... That's your worst case?

Let's face the facts... We are and have historically been a terrible road team in the BSC (unless we're at EWU or UNC for some reason). We play terrible at PSU and often struggle with the cold climates of the BSC late in the season (WSU, MSU loss predictions)...

I feel strongly that we can sneak up on Montana this year and finally beat them. I think we could be looking at 4-1 or 5-0 at home this year...

I also think we're going to have the best attendance we've had since 2000 this year since we host UM and the Causeway Classic. Too bad the first game isn't until week three though... I don't think it would be too absurd to average 11-13K this year if we play well early, draw interest, get 15K or so for UM and 18-20K for the Causeway.

Y'all got a good schedule, it's gonna be tough to make out 8 or 9 wins though. Tough away games, tough home games, should be interesting. I'm so damn jealous of all the JC transfers you guys are able to land :x I wish we could paint more with our brush in the offseason!
