Yes, Coach Pete is now the Husky's #1 man. Coach Pete has been in Boise for 13 years, 8 as head coach. He's had a tremendous run, 2 BCS Bowl victories, conference championships, national coach of the year awards and whole lot more. Those are his professional accomplishments.
I've seen a personal side of Coach Pete that out weighs any and all of that. He's a guy who has a real life perspective on sick kids. I know he feels blessed with his own son's medical issues. I could see it when he went to St. Luke's Children's Hospital several years ago. He was there specifically to visit my wife's cousin, a twelve year old with only weeks to live. He and Ian Johnson didn't need to be there. They should have been on a plane to Eugene to prepare for the Bronco's meeting on the turf at Autzen Stadium. Instead, they were delivering a special message to Garrett. Unfortunately, after several uncomfortable minutes in the hallway, they were told that Garrett's condition was such that he shouldn't see any visitors that day. Coach Pete and Ian gave a few Bronco items to his grandparents and left to catch a plane. I swear I saw Coach Pete wipe tears from his eyes, not just because of Garrett, but the other kids, little kids being pulled in wagons holding on to their IV carts and hairless grade school kids playing in the wide spot in hall. It rips my heart every time I think of it. Several days later, Coach Pete returned, this time with a team autographed ball and a dandy future NFL quarterback, Kellen Moore. They talked to Garrett and his dad, grandparents and a few others. They didn't stay too long, but it was enough.
Washington got a great coach and an even better human being. Go Washington and Go Coach Pete!!!
