OT: UND to Drop Two Sports

North Dakota, faced with a $1.3 million cut in its athletic department, announced Wednesday it is cutting women's hockey and men's and women's swimming and diving. The hockey team produced 8 players who participated in the 2014 Olympics. UND is leaving the Big Sky in the fall of 2018 as part of a reorganization of the athletic department in response to budget cuts.

UND is the only school currently in the Big Sky that awards full cost of attendance scholarships, which costs the school $700,000 a year. Cutting the women's hockey program and the swimming and diving teams will save UND an estimated $2.8 million a year. Some of that money will be reallocated for scholarships in other sports.
