Parquet Basketball Floor idea

ParkAvenuVik had this to say on the OregonLive Forum (I added the photos): I got an idea looking at the Viking Pavilion video and the basketball court envisioned to be inside it.

Green and white unis make us look a lot like the Boston Celtics. Portland and Boston are considered to be cities that have a lot in common. Portland was almost named Boston, a flip of the coin (Pettygrove & Lovejoy) had the name to be Portland.

What if we emulated the Celtics by having a parquet floor in the new Viking Pavilion? Such a tradition would emulate that of a great basketball town and perennial winner. The Blazers could even use it to practice on when they had a game against the Celtics coming up on their away schedule.

I think that's a fantastic idea. Washington State has a parquet floor and I think it's great.

Not sure what the cost comparison is. If I recall, the Celtics spent 200k on their new parquet floor when the old one was replaced.

Portland is the land of wood. I wonder if there is a wood flooring company that would like to make a certain donation, perhaps destined to be viewed by OSAA basketball play-off audiences. $200K is the retail price. The COGS price is much, much less. Perhaps there is a basis for a deal to be made. Let's make a deal.

Good point. Maybe even something like this since we're an urban university:

It would be pretty cool to make a statement with the floor of our new facility.

Now this is the purpose of the Forum: To come up with better and better notions by drawing from each contributor's good ideas. Local is always better, and an environmental mission serves the purpose in multiple ways. I believe you hit the bull's eye.

That artists' rendering of the arena looks fantastic! Throw in a parquet floor and wow - it would really pop and create something very unique. How great would it be if a commercial flooring company donated some of the materials and/or labor costs in exchange for their company logo being featured throughout the arena? Maybe something recognizing the company on the floor itself, "Stott Court dedicated by [flooring company]".

Even if it's just materials, or just labor in exchange for a reduced cost would help since we don't exactly have the athletic budget that other schools have. I'd like to see a lot of advertising with local companies. Boise State has their 'taco bell arena,' but I wouldn't mind seeing the Widmer Garden, Freightliner Forum, or PacifiCorp Pavilion on the side of the new building. I like the Viking Pavilion name, but if we can generate capital for the build by selling the naming rights, pull the trigger.

Has anybody popped these suggestions over to the athletic director, school president and/or the school Board of Regents to get their feedback or get the ball rolling in they like the idea?

I think it's funny everyone loves the Celtics' parquet floor, but what's the first thing someone usually does when they move into a home with parquet floor - rip it out!

I personally would rather keep the focus on the team, not the floor, that's who I'm watching and cheering for, so why spend so much money on the floor, there are other great flooring options.

Parquet floor or not, I just hope the floor color scheme ends up looking highly appealing, something to be proud of and not shamefully neglected in terms of design appeal.

I'm all for pursuing options of a parquet floor at a minimal cost.

Explore options of trading advertising for material and labor. For a sleek looking floor, I'd be willing to hear 'this floor brought to you by X' prior to the starting lineups being announced for a few years.

I see your point on focusing on the team, but this thread is sort of on the floor, rather than the team...

Speaking of a basketball floor.

I caught a glimpse of Brooklyn's new floor on Sports Center last night.

The 'herringbone' pattern is quite unique.

PSU should follow what the Trail Blazers are doing with their new floor once we're ready to sharpen the shovels and get the new area underway:

Let the fans/students vote on it. It may help tie the students to the basketball programs. Not all students are into / know about / follow PSU basketball, but I'm sure there's a ton that are aware of the arena project since it's not only for athletic use.
