Penalties

Don't get me wrong. I would like nothing better than a PSU win in Missoula. Every time we beat a team I want them to win out the rest of the way. Helps our chances to take the conference title.

Just out of curiosity, I checked University of Montana's 2010 football stats game against PSU. Interesting.
University of Montana had:
3 Personal Foul penalties
1 Face mask penalty
1 Clipping penalty

Portland State had:
1 Clipping penalty

Seems they were the dirty team last year. I believe, they are searching for an excuse they can use if they lose next Saturday. But as you can see, it doesn't fly. Just as MSU's claim that PSU played dirty last Saturday didn't fly, each team had 5 personal fouls.

I'm not going to argue one way or another here, but if you think penalties called are the only indicator of how a game is played, you don't know much about football.

If it is not based on fact, then it just becomes a matter of subjectivity or hearsay. If you have a case of facts then prove it. Otherwise, you're just a whiney old lady. Just you say something doesn't mean it is so. If you can prove otherwise, then it you/MSU should be taking it to the league commissioner because chop blocking should be called as a penalty and if it is a trend then maybe the league should do something about it. I would support complaints about chop-blocking even if it was my own team. Whining on an internet forum is sophomoric.

For your veiwing pleasure.

That is obviously a chop block and Manuel Rojas should be embarrassed and should have been penalized. But this is one example from a game last year committed by a sophomore. One example doesn't exhibit a trend. I am just not convinced.

Catbob... you are correct, penalties called are not the only indicator of how a game is played. So, why are you guys at MSU & UM talking about PSU's penalties this year? The plays and score is the indicator of how a game is played. But since you claim PSU is a dirty team the only facts to prove this are the penalties called, which shows
that UM & MSU sure receive their share of personal fouls compared to PSU. On by the way, I checked last year's game with MSU, are you ready... MSU had an illegal helmet contact, an illegal block, Personal Foul and a roughing the kicker. PSU... will they didn't have any personal fouls or anything close to one. Stats are stats. Obviously the game officials feel PSU is not doing anything illegal otherwise they would call it.

If we're going back to last year, ironic that an MSU player was actually suspended last year by the conference for a flagrant helmet-to-helmet hit. This type of hit could arguably be lethal.

Wonder how Severin Campbell feels about PSU. :P

Wonder how Weber State's Derek Johnson feels about Montana:

Regardless or whether or not PSU is "dirty" (I never said these words), they clearly play undisciplined football - 12.2 penalties a game for 119.8 yards a game, good for the 2nd worst in FCS football.

That we can agree on. And Coach Burton owns that statistic.

I'm not hating on PSU either, I've always liked the Viks. Just don't wana see anyone get hurt, and yes that includes the helmet-to-helmet issue MSU had last year. Some of those were questionable, some were blatant. We lead the league in suspensions last year... :P

It's an entirely different situation when one player loses their head and does something incredibly dumb and dirty than when it seems to be taught, called and OK'd by the coaching staff.

What happened to Campbell was a designed play where your coaching staff inserted some backup safety to haul ass down the line and nail the back of our most talented DE. It happened a few times until it finally worked and you broke his knee cap. It then continued against our replacement DE to the point where he limped off the field as well.

After the game your coach seemed perfectly fine with it. Quite a different situation than someone losing their head in the heat of the moment and doing something shitty.

I'm hoping we see no serious injuries in the Griz vs Viks game..and honestly the Cats are VERY lucky there weren't any serious injuries for their team with stuff like this going on multiple times in game (and not being called as much as it should have):

I have nothing against Portland State....in fact I think it's great that you guys are making some great improvements to your team, and really showing some impressive offensive numbers out there. Stronger big sky teams is a great thing. I do have a problem with some of the tactics that are being used though, especially when it results in severe injuries. Not only did Campbells injury end his career and any hopes he had of playing professionally, it'll probably be an injury that plagues him for the rest of his life, especially later on.

Which is exactly what some of us have done. Fullerton is also looking at game tape, as are BSC officials.

Knock yourself out. You guys are so holier than thou. I watched the tape. Our kid is a jc transfer. He was given a penalty. Where's the trend?

Seriously, YOU WON THE DAMN GAME. Give it a rest, and stop complaining.

Well, all I can say is that we were below our average for penalty yards today. I guess that's a good thing. :thumb:
