The Portland State men's basketball team completed the 2009-10 academic year with a perfect Academic Progress Rate (APR) score of 1000 points. This comes on the heels of a one-year post-season restriction from the NCAA for low APR scores from 2005-09.
The Viking men compiled a 2.91 GPA for the 2009-10 and a spring quarter GPA of 3.09 as grades have just been released. This continues the trend of improvement for the program over the past two years.
From 2007-09, PSU graduated seven of its eight seniors from the men's basketball program. The 2009-10 senior class has three seniors - one of whom has graduated, a second who is scheduled to graduate following the summer session, and a third who has completed course work, but is taking additional classes to stay at PSU through fall term and play football.
"Working with campus and faculty, Athletics enacted a number of programs aimed at supporting the academic pursuits of our Men's Basketball student-athletes," said Athletics Director Torre Chisholm. "It's fulfilling to see that these measures were effective and that we have successfully addressed problems from the past."
Portland State has made improvements across the board in academic progress and support over the last two years, including two new academic advisors, revised admission procedures, enhanced life and study skill programs among a list of 30 action items identified by a campus-wide improvement task force. These enhancements have the Viking program trending upward.
Head Coach Tyler Geving and his coaching staff have led the improved academic progress of the program since taking over in April 2009.
"Our players have done a great job all year of working hard in the classroom and it has resulted in our highest GPAs over the last five years," said Geving. "Our coaching staff has done a tremendous job of tracking our athletes during the year. The addition of (academic advisors) Josh Sine and Rashad Floyd have made a huge difference in our academic performance. Both of those guys truly care about the student-athlete.
The APR score from 2009-10 should give the program a significant improvement when the next APR scores are released in June 2011, measuring the span of 2006 to 2010. PSU had already improved by 47 points from the 2009 report to the 2010 report.
