Peter W. Stott Honored With Retired Number At Wine And Roses

Prominent booster Peter W. Stott was honored on Saturday at the annual Portland State Athletics Wine and Roses fundraising dinner at the Portland Art Museum. Stott was recognized for his outstanding contributions to the Viking program over the past three decades by having the number 18 retired by Viking athletics in his honor.
Mr. Stott has touched every part of the Athletics program over the years, including major contributions for the development of the Stott Community Field on campus, the refurbishment of the Stott Center Athletics Facility, and as contributor to and chair of the Viking Pavilion Campaign to create a new 5,000-seat multipurpose facility at the Stott Center.
Portland State Athletics selected the number 18 to retire in Mr. Stott's honor to represent 18-wheel trucks, as his successful business career in the region began in the trucking industry. Once any current PSU student-athletes that wears the number 18 in their respective sports have completed their careers, the program will no longer issue a number 18 jersey.
"Peter Stott's influence is visible throughout the PSU Athletics program, with our student-athletes and coaches being the beneficiaries of three decades of his volunteer leadership," said Director of Athletics Torre Chisholm. "That leadership continues even today as he chairs the fund raising campaign for Viking Pavilion, which promises to be the crowning jewel of both Viking Athletics and his lifelong commitment to Portland State."
In addition to his involvement in Athletics, Mr. Stott is on the Foundation Board of Portland State University and the Board of Trustees for PSU. He has previously been honored by PSU with the Charles Withers Memorial Award (football, 1992), Portland State University President's Award (1998), the Portland State University Simon Benson Award (2001), and was the 2011 Recipient of the Doctor of Humane Letters, Honoris Causa awarded by Portland State University.
Mr. Stott is also a 2014 recipient of the Horatio Alger Award. He is now a member of the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans. Similar to characters in stories by Horatio Alger, Jr., Association Members traditionally have started life in "humble" or economically challenging circumstances. In spite of this early adversity, or many would say because of it, they have worked with great diligence to achieve success and the fulfillment of their dreams.
