PGE Park

Interesting tidbit at the end of an article in today's Tribune:

• Finally, PGE Park is getting a new artificial surface.

The plan is to begin tearing out the old NeXturf today, with a new FieldTurf surface expected to be in place by mid-February – in time for the Oregon State-Georgia three-game baseball series beginning Feb. 29. It’s a $1.1 million project that will benefit the Portland Beavers and Timbers, Portland State and the local high schools to no end.

Great to hear... I'll have to stop by there and check it out. I sure hope that we have a better looking football configuration as far as the endzones go...

Halle-freaking-lujah!!

However, with baseball and soccer sharing, don't count on painted endzones. Ever.

Marty... configuration?

By configuration I mean painted endzones that can be inserted for PSU football games. Such as the Viking logo at midfield.

Hopefully PSU was able to get their two cents in for the new turf.

I'm wondering if they had to put in more than their two cents, if you know what I mean? Is Paulson picking up the tab? Is cost being spread among his two teams and PSU? Either way, great news.

City, Paulson strike deal to revamp PGE Park

http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/index.ssf/2009/07/city_paulson_strike_deal_to_re.html

Portland Timbers owner Merritt Paulson, Mayor Sam Adams and Commissioner Randy Leonard emerged from their final negotiating session just before 2 p.m. today after finalizing a $31 million deal to renovate PGE Park for the team's 2011 Major League Soccer debut.

And just in time.

The City Council's 2 p.m. meeting includes measures that would exempt the project from the city's competitive bidding requirements and give Paulson and his company full authority to hire designers and builders for the project.

The long-awaited deal scales back the changes from what was previously envisioned by $6 million to fit within the available budget. The details on the changes are not yet available.

Under the terms of the deal, which still needs City Council approval, Paulson will contribute $8 million in cash and prepay rent in the amount of $11.1 million for years eight through 25. The city will borrow $11.2 million against the spectator facilities fund and would pay another $700,000 in other costs.

"The renovations will also pave the way for the Portland State University Vikings football team to enjoy an enhanced facility."

Timbers: PGE Park renovations signal start of something new

There will be three locker rooms. The Timbers will move into the Portland Beavers' locker room. The old Timbers' locker room -- the visiting baseball team locker room -- will be the visiting team's locker room for soccer. The Portland State football team will use the other locker room.

"The locker rooms are pretty much getting a complete facelift. There will be a lot of upgrades," Puckett said. "We're adding a strength and conditioning room, some therapy areas and more offices."

This will sure help with the facilities aspect of recruiting. Up to date practice locker rooms, as well as up to date game day locker rooms can only help.

PGE Park Construction

Portland State administration and season-ticket holders were privy to a tour of the construction at PGE Park. Take a quick look.
