Playing the Devil's Advocate...

Saturday's loss was undoubtedly frustrating and hard to watch/listen for all of us. I'm a huge fan of Marshall Sperbeck and what he's done for this program. 6-6 was an acceptable record for me going into the season. I would qualify it as successful, but not groundbreaking. I would hope to see at least 7-8 wins next year to truly declare that this program has moved past the punching bag phase of it's life in DI...

Let me play the devil's advocate for a moment. I've talked to a couple people who've brought up the following...

When you look back at things, was this team really that much better? Sure, last year we were 3-8 and 4-7 the year before that and this year we were 6-6. But, consider this. We had the same amount of DI wins this year as we did in Mooshagian's final year (4). Granted we've got a much younger, more disciplined group on our hands now. But, what do you say to folks who say the successes of this year were misleading?

Two subpar DI teams as W's
Couldn't close the tight games (ISU and Weber)
Defense still is porous and gives up big plays, you still gotta cover the middle in prevent defense
Three consecutive loses, two blowout's

In watching the team we seemed more disciplined. Overall, I like our direction and I have confidence Sperbeck can do it. The depth was there and all games were enjoyable to watch.

Be thankful we have a fully funded FCS team to cheer on. Go Hornets!

Moosh is mush.

Absolutely it is misleading. Two D2 teams scheduled is unacceptable, however, I would say it was instrumental in the development of such a young team and it definitely helped out with their confidence early on. I think it is ok to schedule a D2 school and maybe a weak 1AA school to gear up and get the team ready for conference play. (Although with the constant decline of ucd, the Causeway might fill this role in the upcoming years). I also like the idea of scheduling a weak Mountain West school to earn a little money for the program.
Eventually I hope the program will get strong enough to where it can schedule a middle of the road 1A school or a top tier 1AA school in lieu of the D2 school. The scheduling will come into consideration if a playoff run is warranted.

My OOC doctrine (assuming 3 OOC games):

1 D-II/D-III/NAIA/Sub-par FCS
1 Par FCS or higher
1 Lower Tier FBS

That's a good way to prep for the season/playoffs without having a too easy or bodybag issue.

I agree with the above. We should try to schedule a bye or a lower division game after the FBS game.
Southern Oregon was a good match after Colorado State. If we had played a solid FCS team that week without 8 starters available we might have dug a big hole for our self and turned the whole season south.
