I wish I didn't, but I have a slight concern with who will play this position. Randy hasn't really needed to worry about this for a few years and it seemed at the end of last year, that this wouldn't be a concern. However, injuries has somewhat stunted development.
Cody John has been injured all summer and really hasn't had much of a chance to improve his game. To me, as a freshman, he played extremely well on the wing, but last season moonlighting a bit at the 1 he wasn't as efficient. I think Cody is a hell of a player, and love his ability to hit tough shots inside the arch, but at the 1 his game has fizzled. His outside shooting has never been a thing of beauty and his passing isn't the best. If he was the undisputed 1, maybe his game would improve a bit. There was a bit of a log jam at that position last year.
Jerrick Harding For a number of us, we felt that he would be the next point guard (I sometimes struggle with Randy trying to make the best scorer on the team into the point guard and forcing the player to play a position that isn't natural). Yet when he has gotten the chance to play the floor QB he hasn't been as dangerous. In the CIT he played the PG against Corpus Christi and ended the game with 6 or 7 TOs. In the P&W, it didn't seem he was highly efficient at that position. He is undoubtedly a scorer and a major threat. His speed, coupled with his shooting prowess, really make him dangerous. He could average 20+ this year. However, I don't know if putting the pressure of being the PG on his shoulders are being advantageous to his development. Maybe he will prove that he belongs at the 1 and should be our starting PG. He has the skill set to do it.
Freshman There are two freshmen who could potentially play the PG this year for the Cats: Doc Nelson or Trevon Ary-Turner. At the beginning of the Summer I really thought that Doc would come and make that position his, with Turner becoming either a wing or a backup. I'm not so sure anymore. Doc struggled with a knee injury all summer (thankfully it has been cleaned up) and is just getting his legs back. Ary, well, he started the summer somewhat apprehensive, but only gets better every time he hits the floor. I think these two playing against, and with each other, will really help them to develop into special players. Personally, I feel that one will be the primary PG by the time conference starts.
Dusty Baker This is an interesting option. He is clearly our best passer and is exceptionally safe ball handler. He isn't the quickest or most talented player, but he is tough as nails and is the penultimate glue guy. He is someone you want on the floor. He just makes the team better. I've wonder whether Randy is missing the mark by not having Dusty as the PG. His defense is the biggest issue. If he was only a bit quicker.
