Point Guard

I wish I didn't, but I have a slight concern with who will play this position. Randy hasn't really needed to worry about this for a few years and it seemed at the end of last year, that this wouldn't be a concern. However, injuries has somewhat stunted development.

Cody John has been injured all summer and really hasn't had much of a chance to improve his game. To me, as a freshman, he played extremely well on the wing, but last season moonlighting a bit at the 1 he wasn't as efficient. I think Cody is a hell of a player, and love his ability to hit tough shots inside the arch, but at the 1 his game has fizzled. His outside shooting has never been a thing of beauty and his passing isn't the best. If he was the undisputed 1, maybe his game would improve a bit. There was a bit of a log jam at that position last year.

Jerrick Harding For a number of us, we felt that he would be the next point guard (I sometimes struggle with Randy trying to make the best scorer on the team into the point guard and forcing the player to play a position that isn't natural). Yet when he has gotten the chance to play the floor QB he hasn't been as dangerous. In the CIT he played the PG against Corpus Christi and ended the game with 6 or 7 TOs. In the P&W, it didn't seem he was highly efficient at that position. He is undoubtedly a scorer and a major threat. His speed, coupled with his shooting prowess, really make him dangerous. He could average 20+ this year. However, I don't know if putting the pressure of being the PG on his shoulders are being advantageous to his development. Maybe he will prove that he belongs at the 1 and should be our starting PG. He has the skill set to do it.

Freshman There are two freshmen who could potentially play the PG this year for the Cats: Doc Nelson or Trevon Ary-Turner. At the beginning of the Summer I really thought that Doc would come and make that position his, with Turner becoming either a wing or a backup. I'm not so sure anymore. Doc struggled with a knee injury all summer (thankfully it has been cleaned up) and is just getting his legs back. Ary, well, he started the summer somewhat apprehensive, but only gets better every time he hits the floor. I think these two playing against, and with each other, will really help them to develop into special players. Personally, I feel that one will be the primary PG by the time conference starts.

Dusty Baker This is an interesting option. He is clearly our best passer and is exceptionally safe ball handler. He isn't the quickest or most talented player, but he is tough as nails and is the penultimate glue guy. He is someone you want on the floor. He just makes the team better. I've wonder whether Randy is missing the mark by not having Dusty as the PG. His defense is the biggest issue. If he was only a bit quicker.

I don't know who will end up being the starter at the point. Like you said, Randy has some good options this year. I don't know the full extent of Cody's injury and I, also, don't think he would be our first option. Dusty would also be down in the rankings due to the issues you mentioned. Dusty's best utility is on the wing as a spot up shooter. I think he makes a great sixth man due to his ability to come in and score right off the bench.

Looks to me like the three deep chart at the point would include Jerrick, Doc, and Trevon. I think they will all see time as the 1 this year. I don't see any of them red shirting. If Cody is healthy, there might be a chance of a red shirt there. That brings us to the wing positions. Once again, if Cody is healthy, there might be a chance of a red shirt there. As it is, I think it is iffy for any guards to red shirt.

If I had to pick a point guard right now, with the 8 or 9 times I have seen them play, I would say that it will be Trevon. Doc/Jerrick would be next, Doc being the truer PG and Jerrick being the high level scorer. Jerrick is a very good passer, he sees the floor well, and can do whatever he wants with the ball in hand. It's just that the best thing he does is score. Trevon looks like a floor general and seems to calm the team down. Doc has some of that in him as well, but speeds things up a bit. All three guys can break a press, they can get to the rim, and can score from anywhere. I don't see a bad choice among them.

Dusty as the point? Come on Tal. Really? He isn't quick enough on defense. The best players on each team in the conference is usually the point guard. How on earth would Dusty guard, usually, the quickest player? He had back problems last year, and that could have contributed to his being slower but, even though he is healthier as a senior doesn't mean he now is the flash. Olds is right, I can see him being the 6th man in the conference. I don't think you are totally wrong though. I really don't like Harding as the point guard. He is such a weapon playing the 2, but do we really have any other choice? Rahe is stubborn and will do everything he can to force Harding into a floor general, just like he did with Senglin.

I honestly don't think Randy wants to force anybody to play any position. They run all of these combinations of players in practice, film every practice, keep stats on every practice, and make a thorough evaluation of every possible combination of players. It isn't happenstance or anybody's opinion that decides these things. The one unknown, that you only find out in real games, is how a new player will react to the pressure of a crowd and an unknown opponent. There is a little bit of art to it, but it is mostly science. :coffee:
