Poll: Will WSU beat WYO?

Wyoming and Weber did play against a common opponent last year, so it would probably be worthwhile to compare performances.

On 27 September, Weber played at Utah. The Utes defeated the Wildcats by 16 points, 37-21.
The issues was not really in doubt, but the Wildcats established a tie in the 1st quarter and held it for awhile through the 2nd quarter. Weber State stayed within less than three touchdowns until final two minutes of the third quarter, and for all but 6 minutes of the game. By the end of the third quarter, Weber had gained 240 yards and penetrated the red zone twice against Utah's first team offense, almost as much yardage as Wyoming gained in their entire game.

On 11 October, Wyoming hosted Utah in Laramie. The Utes defeated the Cowboys by 33 points, 40-7.
The Cowboys fell behind by 27 points in the second quarter, and fell behind by 34 points early in the third quarter. The Cowboys penetrated the Utah red zone for the first time in the middle of the fourth quarter. I couldn't tell you when Utah put in the second team defense against the Cowboys, but I don't think they waited until the fourth quarter.

The Cowboy offense accumulated 184 yds rushing and 68 yds passing, for 252 yards of offense. Wyoming out-gained the Utes by 10 yards, but the Utah yardage does not include the yards required to score three defensive touchdown. Most of the Cowboy yardage was gained in the final moments of the 4th quarter when the outcome was a foregone conclusion.

The Wildcats rushed for 56 yds and passed for 303 yds, totaling 359 yards of offense against the Utes.

The Cowboys turned gave up two turnovers and allowed three defensive touchdowns, one each on an interception, a fumble recovery and a punt return.
The Wildcats gave up two fumbles but allowed no defensive touchdowns.

The Wildcats were 6 of 13 on 3d- and 4th-down conversions and scored on 2 of 3 red zone opportunities.
The Cowboys were 2 of 15 on 3d- and 4th-down conversions and scored on 1 of 2 red zone opportunities.

The Cowboys tied the score at 0-0 early in the first quarter and forced the Utes to wait almost 4 minutes to score and take the lead.
The Wildcats tied the score 7-7 in the first quarter and held the tie through the second quarter.

Cameron Higgins completed 24 of 38 passes for the Wildcats, for three TDs and zero interceptions and 303 yards. He was sacked twice.
Karsten Sween completed 8 of 18 passes for the Cowboys, with 3 interceptions and no touchdowns for 56 yards. He was sacked once.

Wyoming's top two rushers accounted for 163 of 184 net yards gained. Neither player returns for 2009.

Wyoming will be a tough game, but I think the Wildcats have a chance.

Ive seen that blog, I know I see alot of UM fans saying they want WSU to win but they dont think they will.

Personnaly, I think UM fans dont want Weber to win, in Laramie vs the Pokes, or in Ft. Collins vs the Rams, cause they know that if Weber can win in both Laramie and Ft. Collins then they can win in Missoula, although I already know that Weber can win in Missoula.

They are both going to be great games, but with the team that we have returning, and the fact that Wyoming isnt exactly a top tier FBS school, Weber has just as good a chance to win as they do to lose. I think Weber will enter FT. Colllins 1-0.

I believe that Weber will win the game. When a school gets a new coach, they usually take quite a while to adjust and accept the new system. Wyoming was not a very good team last year, and just changing the coach will not make them any better in one year. He still has to deal with the players that were there. I have not seen a lot of evidence to believe that Wyoming will be SIGNIFICANTLY better this coming season.

That's an interesting take on new coaches, smjcpa. I usually notice just the opposite--at least with teams who are changing coaches after a bad season (or a bad run of seasons). Having finished last year 4-8 and 1-7 in conference, Wyoming fits that category. There are many examples of teams with average talent who flourish in their first year with a new coach. On top of that, Weber is losing a lot of experience on the offensive line, which is the most important group on a football team in my opinion.

Weber lost quite a bit on the O-line, however, The guys playing this year received a lot of reps during games, and played quite a bit. I think that the O-Line will be just fine. Yes, Wyoming will have a better record, but they lost running backs, the q-back position is a BIG ???. Nobody at that position ever got in a rhythm, or was able to establish themselves as the real guy for the job.

Your point is well taken, Weber Dude. The new Wyoming coach, Christensen, has a veeeery impressive resume. I am convinced he will turn around the program.

However, Coach Christensen has a very ambitious agenda, to completely change the Wyoming offense from a traditional grind-it-out running game and field position offense to a spread offense. This, even he cannot accomplish overnight.

In the first place, he does not yet have the horses to accomplish such a radical change. Karsten Sween is no Chase Daniel and other key positions will have to be filled.

In the second place it will take time and game experience for the existing players to achieve the timing and ability to execute the new offense.

Coach Christensen is a formidable opponent, but I still like Weber's chances against Wyoming.

to be honest i think i see weber losing this one. NOT BY MUCH. but i think wyo will just have a little edge on you guys. i think you will be their in the 4th Q and maybe you will pull it off. however you lose at CSU. and idt montana fans think you can win in missoula if you win in WYo and Col.st. two not impressive teams with 2 not impressive fans. Huge props if you win the games. but montana fans will refuse to believe you can beat us here. (its all the moose drool we put in our systems i think!!)

Will Wyo cheat and come film our practices like a Billecheck to make sure they don't lose to an FCS?
I would have to say no they wont cheat by filming practices, mainly because most people in Wyoming simply are not smart enough to run a camera. Also I am kinda expecting Wyoming to overlook WSU and be looking toward their game against Texas the next week.
To me, Laramie has a lot in common with Pocatato, low IQ, poor hygiene, meth labs, lots of trailer parks, and total denial that they live in the worst town in the country.

If the o-line can block and the d-line can rush the passer. WSU will have to win this one in the trenches. If the WSU oline can get Trevin going Wyoming will have cover down, then Higgins, Toone, Phillips and Nakamura will take over. You can see Higgins' mouth water whenever there's cover 1 (i.e Cal Poly).

Wyoming will probably pass the ball at least 40 times. Take away the short stuff and put heat on the QB. Challenge them to beat you deep. I don't think the Wyoming QB completed more than a handful of deep passes all year. Its going to be a great game. Does anyone know if it will be televised via internet, TV, anything?

Hi WhereamI,

Welcome to the forum!

Regarding the game...so far unless something changes (hopefully), the game will be online radio only. Most likely it won't be on The Mtn. Wont be on Big Sky TV since its not at a Big Sky homefield.

We can hope for KJZZ though...

Hopefully you can make it to the game, thats what some of us have been discussing. The school might have some busses going but the planning is still a ways away.

Thats true, winning in Laramie and Ft. Collins dosent mean we will win in Missoula, but our chances of winning that game would be better than the Grizzlies, especially if we beat both the Rams and the Pokes.

Thanks. I'm operating a few thousand miles from ogden but a staunch fan nonetheless. I'm contemplating a redemption tour to Missoula and Cheney. But these middle of nowhere places like Missoula and Laramie might as well be Afghanistan as far as plane fare and the 12 hour drive stuff throws off my in-and-out strategy as not to get myself fired from my job. I sincerely hope the purple pak shows up in force in Laramie. They a put a man on the moon but I cant get a webcast of the WSU, WYO game.

Yall,

signup and vote!

I went and checked out the FCS forum and was amazed at how many responses the topic had generated. I came to the conclusion that it really doesn't matter whether or not the Cats can win (of course I think they will), but that people are so interested in the game, and in Weber State football.
