Perfect example today Tela (HOPING HE'S OK) gets hurt on a freak play and our defense turns into a porous mess.

Last I heard about Tela is that he was going in for an MRI, but he had movement in his arms and legs. Thought is it might be a stinger.

If the Big Sky no longer considers football to be a "core" sport, then it is time to have a serious discussion about whether or not WSU should maintain a football program.

Yep 0-8 sucks, could have, should have, won a few games already. I'm not going to bail on Hill and the Cat's in 1 season. Hill and company are going to turn this program around, the players he has recruited are better than what Sears had, and the games are entertaining to watch.

The team is a walking MASH unit and until the coaches have a chance to build some depth to the program we will continue to see a gap between our starters and their back-ups. Perfect example today Tela (HOPING HE'S OK) gets hurt on a freak play and our defense turns into a porous mess. I am not sure how many OL men we have out but we can't effectively run the ball so we are a 1 dimensional team on offense. That makes life so much easier for the opponents DB's being able to key on just the passing game.

:agree: today may have been the most painful and frustrating to watch, yet, but Hill and Co. get much more of a chance than eight games to turn the mess formally known as Weber State football around. There are still two winnable games remaining on the schedule. This is still better football than the last two seasons and next year should be better yet. It hurts but I'm not bailing on this program.

It's not about this season though. We're a basketball school that has had a couple of fun football seasons. Frustration and heartache are the rule; not the exception......and then there is the financial component. I don't want to drop football either, but maybe there is a reality here we need to face.

Swagger, Weber is not going to drop the football program. Drop it!
If we can have conversations about why we don't fire the cannon after touchdowns anymore and repaving of the Dee Event Center parking lot, why can't we discuss the sustainability of a program that rarely seems sustainable?

It has been a tough 3 years but a few bad years is not reason enough to drop the program. I have no idea what the revenue vs cost of the football program is but there is good support for the program. My guess is Weber's budget is in the top half of the big sky.

Good article from Jim Burton about the possibility of the football program be dropped (I'm glad Jim approached Bovee about this since Bovee is largely to blame for the recent struggles of the program, imo)

Jim Burton's right. Football isn't going anywhere. Wins and losses don't matter in these decisions anyway. It's all about financial viability. And financially, football is in a good place. This was why WSU considered killing it in the early 1990's. But they figured it out and managed to secure the program's financial future with new money-making strategies (sponsorships, preseason "money" games). Butts in seats matter, but not enough to have as big an impact on the athletic department's bottom line as you'd think. Until the program starts bleeding red (which it isn't), axing the football program won't even be considered.

And that is good! :thumb:

Even if the program were to be axed, where would Weber go? Big Sky membership isn't secure enough to cut a major program and still expect to belong. Weber isn't getting into any other conference other than the WAC and we all know that is the worst possible option ever. The Summit is a slight option, but why would we want to be in that league? The Sky, even though it suffers, is a perfect fit for Weber and it houses our major rivals. You can't tell me playing Montana, Southern Utah, Idaho State or Montana State, even in a down year, doesn't get your juices flowing. Finally, Weber has been in the black and actually, hard to believe, made money off of the football program. Butts in the seats are nice and help subsidize the program, but it is not the factor that decides on a programs overall health financially. Popularity, yes, but not financial. The program is in relative good health.
