Portland State at Cal Poly

Cal Poly is simply a really great team with some very impressive victories. This will be a tough one. I hope the team comes ready to compete and execute.
Cal Poly football has many ties to Portland State/Portland. The most obvious is curent Cal Poly head coach who is a former PSU head coach. Co-offensive Coordinator/OL coach Saga Tuitele played and coached at PSU and WR coach Juston Wood and DB coach Neil Fendall both played at PSU. RB coach Aristotle Thompson and starting QB Andre Broadous are both from Portland. I am sure this game has special significance to all of them. Should be a great game.
It's time for these Viking players to realize just how good they are. One thing we seem to be lacking is the confidence necessary to win. A big win against a quality team like Cal Poly may be just what we need. Physically and athletically we more than match up against any BS opponent. Mentally we just aren't there yet. A big win can get this young team there IMHO. Here's hoping this is the week they "get it".

I am really stoked for the game this weekend. I am excited to see if we can build on our big, record setting win against the Bengals. I know the Bengals are down, but I still saw a ton of things that have me optimistic. I watched the Poly vs UNC game, and we will will score against their defense. The only problem is that they will score on ours well. We have been predominantly good against the run, but stopping the option, triple option, wing T hybrid attack is no easy task. The entire defense needs to be disciplined. One blown assignment will be exposed in the option attack. The offense really needs to show up and put points on the board. Maybe if we get a lead we can get Poly passing. I don't think Broadous can beat us through the air if we get up by 2+ scores. Somehow we need to get them to abandon the option, but that will not be easy.

I hope we can come out with an early one/two combo and get Cal Poly out of their game.
Something like a PSU kickback to the house followed by a fumble return by our D would do nicely. Get them where they need to throw on 2nd and long or 3rd and manageable and see if the linebackers can't get a couple picks.

I'm still pretty bummed about last night's game...
Two things really stuck out yesterday:
1) The momentum shift after the Keitrell punt atrocity. Our offense finally sustained a long drive and scored a touchdown. The defense came out great and forces a Poly three and out. And we muff the punt?! Are you freaking kidding me? The sad thing is, once I saw that ball hit the ground, I fully expected our PR to try and field it. Why? Because that is the same dumb stuff that we've been doing all damn season. Seriously, just let Monahan fair catch every punt, I don't care, I know he will catch it or has the football sense to get away from it if he can't handle it. I will take a guaranteed change of possession over a "big play" because all the big plays for our special teams are for the other team. If we field that punt after that three and out and score again... it puts less pressure on our defense to stop that option attack and maybe change Poly's gameplan by making them play behind two scores.
2) The 4th quarter drive, the most important drive of the whole game... We hand off the ball three times in a row?!?!?!!!! Are you serious? Down 5, with about 6 minutes left, we go three and out off the same damn run play three times in a row? I am sorry, I just can't believe we couldn't come up with a better set of plays. Barnum's play calling was atrocious for that series and for a lot of the game. The run game wasn't working the whole night, and you don't allow arguably the team's best play maker (McDonagh) make a play? The game was done after that drive.
We had plenty of opportunities to really step on Poly's throat. They were a good team, that option attack is ridiculous. The defense forced some big turnovers and had critical stops, but you can't contain that running attack the whole game. It's just frustrating seeing our Vikes play with teams like Poly, SUU, and UND, coming so close, and coming out the other end. We might have some athletes, but minimizing mistakes and execution is the difference between the bottom of the conference and being at the top. Since we aren't playing for a playoff spot, how about open up the imagination and the playbook, and maybe let our young QB make some calls on the field, so he can truly grasp the playbook and be a force next year and the years to follow? I'm tired of seeing the same 8 plays and a flea flicker every game.

Shoemaker was unreal last night. Talk about playing with your hair on fire.
Cal Poly really was moving the line in the first half, and I thought that they'd just wear us down into a blowout. We really played better on the line in the second half, until the end where I think the tank was empty. Cal Poly's offensive line is really good.

Good game last night, one that could have easily gone the Vikings way. The Vikings are a VERY good team that with just a few break this year could have been competing for a Big Sky championship. And this is exactly why the triple option is actually a viable offensive attack. Poly just took us to the woodshed on the ground last night, something that usually doesn't happen.
