Portland State at Northern Arizona University - Sept. 29

This upcoming game will show a lot about the character of this team. Winning out looks like the only way to make the postseason, that looks like a tall order; however, the team can only look at one game at a time. With the postseason looking like a long shot, will the team show heart and resiliency, or will they lay down and truly make this a long season?

Some notes on Northern Arizona: they got a huge win over the weekend vs. Montana. Montana jumped out to a early 17 point lead, but Northern Arizona ended up winning 41-31. How did they comeback? Montana had 5 turnovers and Zach Bauman is a beast. Bauman may be the best RB in the country.

Our defense has shown the ability to stop the run, so the biggest key to the game is whether or not our defense can put together a complete game. Can we stop the run and the pass? Will the defense be disciplined enough to not give up the big plays in the secondary or big penalties?

Our offense will have to continue to keep putting points up on the board. Northern Arizona is tough place to play and can get loud, so our freshman QB must keep his cool. He seemed to be in control in big loud venues (Century Link, North Dakota), so I think he will be fine. I do want to see him cut down his interception total, though. If we protect the ball and stay aggressive on offense, I think the team will put up high numbers again. With whispers of a Monahan return, Carter and Noa's emergence, the DJ and Shaq attack, and McDonagh… we have too many weapons not to put up points.

Also, can our special teams not cost us 10-14 points? Without special team miscues, we could possibly be 3-1 (and had a more respectable loss against UW). Special teams shouldn't be this big of a liability. Special team mistakes should be rare, not an expected occurrence.

Regardless of the frustrating loss against SUU, I am still excited to see what this Saturday holds. GO VIKS!

Last time we went to the Skydome . . . ugh, that was ugly. I just hope this time we do a lot better. And you're right, Bauman is one hell of an RB; we need to stop their rushing attack and make them beat us through the air. However, the one good thing about that is that our run defense is a lot better than the pass defense, so if we make them run it a lot and then force 'em to pass later when we can blanket the field, maybe we have a chance to get a good defensive performance in.

Agree that this tilt with NAU will be a test of character and will power. Here's hoping the Viks show some fight and don't let the "here we go again"s polute their mindset. Once that happens, it's all over. C'mon, Viks - get this one!

I am a big Viking fan and I hate to say it but until our coaching staff gets our guys executing on the fundamentals, we will continue to get beat.

I guess we don't have to worry about Nigel getting hired away from us any time soon.

Looks like one of NAU's starting safeties is out due to suspension.

A field goal for us early. Now we just need to see if our run defense can take some of the pressure off of the secondary . . .

Ugh, this one is getting away!

Also, I find it ironic that the ad at the bottom of our thread here has a tourist ad for Flagstaff on it. That's odd timing.

Geez, Rothstein is playing well, then gets his helmet knocked off. Has to come out and they hit one over his position. We can't buy a break this year.
