Portland State Part II

SO...big things are a happening at the Dee on Saturday night.

Most importantly, Weber State Great Bruce Collins will be having his jersey retired. What an honor. I really hope Weber has done its best to get as many players from those historic years together, along with legendary coach Neil McCarthy.

Coach Rahe can surpass a couple of major milestones. He can get his 200th victory if the Cats can beat the Vikings and become the winningest coach in Big Sky Games. Also, Weber State, as a DI program, can win its 996 all time game. If everything goes according to plan. Weber could be going for its 1000 all time win against Montana. YIKES!! That would be awesome!

As for PSU...they got beat fairly handily last night in Poky. They could have beaten the Griz, at the Stott, last week but blew a late lead. I'm sure we will see Red Face stomping and riding the refs all game. Other than that...I'm sure we can be prepared for a game with lots of 3's and Junk Yard/Gumby Joel getting hammered in the post. I'm pretty excited for tomorrow night!! Go Cats!! :thumb:

Oh...on Thursday night and Sir Velo may need to check this for me, but Joel tied the Dunk record for a season held by Dave Patten. He could break it against PSU on Saturday night.

PSU is one of those teams that has enough talent to beat anybody on a given night. As always, their problems revolve around playing defense, rebounding, and staying together as a team. Talent has never been a problem and isn't this year. Their coach riding the refs all game long, and not coaching his team, seems to be the biggest problem. They would probably do better if the refs would just give him two quick Ts and get him off the floor. It would be less a distraction for his players.

Weber up only 71-69 with 4:20 remaining in the game. It's been painful to watch with Bolomboy on the bench in foul trouble, and pardon me for looking ahead, but I hope this isn't what we have to look forward to next season when he's not here.

The biggest thing I've noticed in this game is that McKay Cannon has a lot of growing to do (thankfully he's just a Freshman). He may be the point guard, but his ball handling needs some improvement (can't break a press without making it interesting), and his strength (three point shooting) has never been consistent in his first year.

There was some really poor ball handling in this one. I can see why PSU is first in steels per game in the BSC. They play the passing lanes really well. However, on the flip side of that, we made some ill advised passes. Our shooting was better tonight, but our D seemed to slip a bit. Also, the refs were quite quick with the whistle tonight. The PSU coach got in their ear early and stayed with it the whole game long. It seemed to pay off for him. I think we had three rooky refs on the floor at the same time. They seemed intimidated by the red faced coach, running out and stomping the floor. Not exactly sure how he escaped getting a T. Just rooky refs, I guess. :wall:

Love to see a sideline warning and then a T on coaches who don't stay off the court. They give sideline warnings in football -- and that is even when the team is not on the field of play. No coach should spend as much time on the court as PSU's coach did tonight. Boylen for the U used to do the same thing. I'm sure there is a rule, the refs should grow a set and T a guy like that up.

Love to see us play a zone once and awhile. PSU seemed to be another team that was just begging to be zoned...

I was surprised at our shooting % when I checked after the game. I knew we had a good shooting first half, but was surprised we were over 50% for the game as we seemed so cold in the second half.

I agree with you on his potential for growth as a player. He made two really weak passes that resulted in turnovers. However, he also had 6 assists and scored a bit better this game. He plays like a freshman sometimes, and gets down on himself a bit when he makes a mistake. I see significant improvement in him as the season is progressing. I also see a lot of potential in Cody John. He is more of a combo guard for us, but needs to improve his outside shot. Both of those guys are going to be good for us over the next 3 years.
To me, the one who shouldn't be making the turnovers, and is, is Jeremy. I'm really not liking him at the point lately.

I don't think that our post defense was good last night, but it could have been more about how the refs were calling the game than anything else. We are not getting any consistency in officiating from game to game. I wish they would eliminate the charge call all together in basketball. It should either be a blocking call or nothing at all. The refs get the call wrong more often than they get it right and they need to eliminate all the flopping that is going on. To go along with that, when an offensive player is pushing in, the defender should be allowed to push back without getting whistled for a foul. A foul should only be called when it is one sided. :wall:

Cannon is our best point guard. It isn't even close. Up 16 Rahe pulls Cannon, Senglin takes over at point and we let them back into it. Senglin is not a point guard. Coacn and his damn stubbornness!

Why isn't Baker getting off the bench? He goes from starter to sittin the bench? He is a solid facilitator and glu-guy. Looks like coach is heading back to playing 8 guys. Only reason Juwan got in was our bigs were in foul trouble. Final thought...terrible move burning Johns red shirt.

Congrat's Coach on your 200th career victory and a 124 wins in the Big Sky. We are pretty harsh on Rahe and his flaws but the grass isn't always greener. I, like all of you will always expect more but I am glad Rahe is our coach.

Tal, to lay PSUs comeback on Senglin at the point is not accurate. First, several turnovers were committed by guys other than Senglin. 2nd, both Bolomboy and Hill were on the bench for much of PSU's comeback. Plus, when Cannon came back in WSU was still up 8. (Actually 10, but a PSU player was at the foul line).

And if John had been kept on his red-shirt, we would have seen Senglin playing the point a lot more this year.

What is a point guard? He is the leader of the team on the floor; the QB. On offense everything goes through him. The point guard is the facilitator, the guy most responsible for keeping the offense flowing and the team together. You can blame other guys, but at the end of the day, PG's are the leaders and a teams success hinges on their success.

When Senglin took over at the point Weber was up by 16. When Cannon came back on the floor, he returns with about 4 to go and the home team leading by 2, Weber was able to reassert control and get their lead back. Where are you getting this up by 10 garbage? Where you even watching the game. Rahe takes a timeout and put Cannon back in as point. Yes, having Bolomboy on the floor is a huge plus, something I really worry about for next season, but even more importantly is having a true PG on the floor. Someone who can facilitate, lead, and get everyone involved. Jeremy is not that guy. He is a great player and I'm happy to have him, but he is not a point guard. Even +1 Olds in another topic said that Senglin is still making the same dumb mistakes he made as a Fresh.

Why isn't Baker playing anymore?

First off, the Cats never led by 16 in the 2nd half. Largest lead was 14, right after the 2nd half started. So I might ask you if you were watching the game. I'm not sure when Cannon sat down, but the largest the lead in the middle of the half was 13 (65-52), with about 10 to go. Now, I could be off a bit, but I'm almost certain Cannon re-entered the game with WSU up 71-61 and a PSU player at the line with about 6 to go. A minute and a half later the score is 71-69. Bolomboy checked back in at that time. I'm pretty sure Cannon was already in the game.
I'm not disagreeing that the team is better with Cannon and Senglin on the floor at the same time. I'm just saying that the fact that PSU cut the lead to 2 wasn't solely because Senglin was running the point. Plus, if you think John should have been kept on the red-shirt list, who would you play behind Cannon? In many games John has outplayed Cannon.
As for Baker, I also wonder what's happened to his minutes. Seems like it's a trade off between Baker and Gittens.
