When: 1:30 p.m.

Where: CEFCU Stadium

Radio: 1590

Story line: Coming off a 45-10 loss at Tulsa, the Spartans hope to avoid the plight that befell fellow FBS schools Washington State, Virginia and Iowa State last Saturday: losing to an FCS team. San Jose State has won its past four home openers, all of which came against FCS teams: New Hampshire last year, North Dakota in 2014, Sacramento State in 2013 and UC Davis in 2012. Portland State beat Central Washington 43-26 last Saturday. Tight end Maximo Espitia, a graduate transfer from Cal, led the Vikings with five catches for 88 yards and a touchdown.

Injuries: Portland State — Wide receiver Stevie Coury (back) is out; wide receiver Kahlil Dawson (shoulder) is questionable. San Jose State — Linebacker Christian Tago (knee) and running back Thomas Tucker (concussion) are out.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

The Vikings figure to run the ball and then run it some more. Portland State racked up 286 yards on the ground last Saturday. Meanwhile, San Jose State allowed 305 rushing yards to the Golden Hurricane.

Ron Caragher’s team must do a better job in turnover margin than it did at Tulsa. The Spartans did not collect a fumble or an interception, and the three turnovers they committed led to 21 points.

The Portland State players are experiencing a true road trip. FCS teams typically don’t have near the budgets that FBS teams have, and the Vikings took a bus from Portland on Thursday to get to the Bay Area. They’ll be busing back to Portland after the game.
