Portland State's new coach

Hmmmm. defense, that is a novel idea.

Nigel Burton will be Portland State’s next head football coach.

The Nevada defensive coordinator is expected to be announced as Jerry Glanville’s successor at a news conference on Tuesday.

Burton served five years as cornerbacks coach at Oregon State before becoming the Wolfpack’s D-coordinator in 2008. Prior to that, he coached cornerbacks for Tim Walsh at Portland State.

The other finalists for the PSU job were former Army head coach Stan Brock, Willamette head coach Mark Speckman, Cal Poly D-coordinator Greg Lupfer and San Diego State offensive coordinator Al Borges.

Burton was a three-year starter at safety for Washington, helping the Huskies to three straight bowl appearances in the late 1990s.

Nevada (8-4) will play Southern Methodist in the Hawaii Bowl on Dec. 24. The Wolfpack started the season 0-3, then won eight games in a row before losing 44-33 to Boise State on Nov. 27. They finished second in the Western Athletic Conference race behind the Broncos.

Under Burton, Nevada was third in the WAC in scoring defense (27.2 points per game) and total defense (398.9 yards). The Wolfpack were first in rush defense (114.7) but last in pass defense (284.2).

This is news to GoViks.com, the school's official athletics website. The link doesn't work, either. But if true, this news excites me. Burton joins an exclusive group: current D-I head coaches who played for UOP. To the best of my knowledge, Burton makes it TWO. He's also the second member of the '95 UOP football team to become a head coach.

Burton was Pacific Quarterback Club co-Player of the Game twice that year: sharing with QB Nick Sellers and WR Eric Atkins for their Homecoming performance vs. LA Tech 14 Oct, and sharing with RB Joe Abdullah Nov 4 vs. New Mexico State. Burton's Homecoming performance was good enough to also net him Big West Conference Player of the Week honors.

UOP Football has been getting some pretty big honors the last week or so. Tiger OL Bryan Chiu just won the Grey Cup with the Montreal Alouettes.

I would like to make a complaint to the administrator of this board. Can UOP football fans please post on UOP message boards. Oh wait, UOP doesn't have football.

There is an inordinate amount of posting regarding UOP, Delta JC and any high school within 15 miles of Lodi and some sort of strange obsession with any male with the surname Carmazzi.

1. SacRat: Complaining will do you absolutely no good considering the fact that the main violator IS the administrator.

2. JMB: Have you forgotten that the Carmazzi's come out of Carmichael-Jesuit, which is well within the Hornet sphere of influence?

ROFL. You guys are a laugh riot. Though I expected SD to be the first to say something....

Or any QB with the surname of White ( for example, Danny or Garrett).

JMB, how could you forget the Independent Women's League's Sacramento Sirens 3 time national champions? Sirens is not a bad name considering in Greek mythology the Sirens (Greek singular: Σειρήν Seirēn; Greek plural: Σειρῆνες Seirēnes) were three dangerous bird-women, portrayed as seductresses, who lived on an island called Sirenum scopuli. See how Superhornet sucks you in. I feel like I just lost knowledge.

That hire is an interesting one. He's an up and coming young coach, but I don't know if PSU is the place he needed to rush off for his first HC job. He's definitely gone all in with that choice. At 33, I think he should have been a bit more patient. Who knows he might have gotten the Nevada job if hung around there long enough if he's really good. Ault isn't going to coach forever.

Just think- after Glanville destroyed the program, 3 wins makes him look like a rising star-ingenious!

LMAO, but in SH's defense, the Carmazzi's are a fixture in local football lore. They are in their third generation (if I'm not mistaken) of producing college football players for local universities; UCD, UOP/HU, and Sac State.

Well I figured someone else would jump on you for the UOP posts. Plus UOP shutdown football long before I arrived at Sac State so anything regarding their football program is completely irrelevant to me. It kind of falls in the same category of that guy that goes around all the FCS football sites posting “bring back Titan (CSUF) football” nonsense. We all know no one in California will revive a defunct football program.
