Position Discussion - WRs

We are in the mist of the dead season on this board, so I will start a topic like this for each position every here and there.

This is a series of positions very few players have secured a spot, who all should start? We have some athletes coming in that may contribute. Discuss and make a prediction as to who you think will start.

Transfers

Deric Davis 5-11 185lbs Jr.
Raymond Fry 5-8 188 lbs So.
Tracy Ford 5-8 180lbs Jr.
Vick Amick 5-10 195lbs Sr.
Ryan Kavanaugh 6-0 170lbs Sr.

Incoming Freshman

Brandon Dunlap 5-11 190lbs Fr.
Joshua Foley 5-10 180lbs Fr.
Zach Brown 6-1 180lbs Fr.
Cory McCaffrey 5-11 190lbs Fr.

Returning Players

Reggie Joesph 6-0 190lbs Sr.
Ty Coleman 5-11 180lbs Sr.
Mike Corral 5-9 185lbs Jr.
Marcel Thompson 6-3 210lbs Jr.
Matt Smith 6-5 200lbs Jr.
Steve Cooper 5-9 180lbs Sr.
Mario D'Ambrosio 5-11 200lbs Jr.
Marcus Brigham 5-11 195lbs Jr.
Aaron Woods 5-6 180lbs Jr.
Reggie Jones 6-0 200lbs Sr. (Also plays Defense, CB)

I still have to ask, what happened to all the FBS transfers who were flooding JG's phone with interest in coming to PSU? I just think that with this offense, WR should be the easiest position to recruit on the entire team, yet it seems to be our weakest link.

We do have FBS transfers, just not from very good FBS schools(Idaho). We can only get lucky with something like that, kinda like what happened with Brian White, he showed up out of nowhere early in the season.

I can only think of three guys that I think are a lock to start:
SB: D'Ambrosio
SB: Joseph
WR: Smith

Joseph can move to WR if some of the transfers (Ford, Fry, Davis) at slot show the ability to read a coverage.

The best receiver coming into this season will be D'Ambrosio, hands down. He runs great routes, and he can read the defenses.

Some random thoughts....

With regards to Jones. I'd rather see his snaps come on the defensive side of the ball. A 6'0 cover corner with size and speed is rare at PSU, and even in FCS for that matter. Defense wins games, and we should look pretty good at corner with Jones. Any extra snaps at WR would be nice to see in a) red zone situations where we can have him run a fade and go up to get the ball, or b) instances where we can isolate with single coverage and get some YAC with his size and speed.

I really don't think we'll know who our core receiving unit is until a couple weeks into the season. We'll probably get pretty excited with some of the receiving corp play in fall practice, but that'll be because day in and day out our guys will be seeing the same type of defense and get to know it. Defensive success against the run and shoot involves different looks to confuse the coverage read offense that is the run and shoot. Those who are really doing their homework in this system and are hitting the film will rise like cream to the top.

I'm thinking of guys like Kirkland, who signed during the normal signing period, not guys who left their original teams at the last minute.

I see Davis getting a lot of PT right away. I'd also look for more out of Thompson his second year in the system. In the slot, I hope one of the freshman (Todd or McCaffrey) can really adapt quickly and use his shiftiness to get on the field.

Do you think either Todd and/or McCaffrey will redshirt?

I think one or the other, but the team was really hurting for playmakers last year. These adapted running backs should fit the bill if they can develop the route-running and hands expected from a slot man. I'm sure they'd love to redshirt both, but unless the other options really impress, I see one of them playing as inevitable, especially if McClintock doesn't produce big results.

You are missing Ashton Pittman from Torrence, CA, he is a true freshman WR who already this week in summer 7 on 7's looks big time. Several freshman wide receivers and QB Kramer Hagan are on campus for classes, lifting and 7 on 7s. If you are local and want to see some future PSU players you can catch them in the afternoons at the practice field. Hopefully most of these freshman can red shirt, several like Hagan are from small high schools and no matter what they did at that level this is a huge leap. All of them look very young and need some weight lifting and body growth.
