Possible WAC Invites

According to this story, the WAC plans to expand by April 1, and invites could go out to current/future Big Sky members UC Davis, Portland St, and Cal Poly. They may also make another run at UM, and include Montana St in those talks.

I could see PSU leaving, but UC Davis and Cal Poly aren't going anywhere. As for the Montana's...the decision was made. The WAC is dead.

It is a matter of time till USU becomes a member of the MWC: http://content.usatoday.com/communities/campusrivalry/post/2011/01/utah-state-move-wac-mountain-west/1

Once the Ag's accept membership, I'm sure the MWC will take one more school, most likely, from the defunct WAC San Jose State, even though I think New Mexico State would be a better addition. Once these last two schools are plucked from the WAC to the NEO-WAC MWC...the former will finally die. New Mexico State, Idaho, and La Tech are not attractive options for any schools. Adding Texas St and Texas San Antonio into the mix doesn't help things. Three FBS schools adding four FCS schools into an FBS conference? Not going to happen. If the WAC does survive it will become an FCS or basketball only conference. Sorry New Mexico State duder, your conference is dead.

With two more WAC schools, possibly, leaving the WAC; I think we can all agree that it is now done.

Cal Poly and UC Davis have an exceptional situation right now. They are both in a good football conference, much better than the current WAC, and for all their other sports, they save costs by only having to travel in California. The Montanas will only see the situation as grim.

PSU would be dumb to leave. If they do, they wont get back into the Sky. They will be like Seattle when they left the WCC. Nowhere to go. If UVU is being mentioned along with Bakersfield, we all know that that is a definite death knoll of the WAC.

Idaho or New Mexico State, might as well save some face and petition the Sky for membership.

It might not matter now, as the MWC just announced they won't be expanding at this time. How does that taste, USU?

USU, tough pill to swallow since originally MWC made an offer and they declined, and now they are stuck in the WAC. All those Weber coaches gotta be feeling a little nervous in a struggling program in a soon to be dead conference.....

GO WILDCATS

Well...as a fan of a Big Sky school, I'm actually very worried now. This move could really hurt the Big Sky. Montana, State, and PSU...could jump ship knowing that this could be the last time they could become FBS schools for a very long time. The WAC doesn't want PSU, but they do want, and badly, UM. They need a strong state Flagship, along with Idaho, to be in their conference, and Benson will do anything he can to get them; even inviting a school in Bozeman that we all know isn't ready to compete on the FBS level. If any of the those schools are. This could really hurt our conference. If the MWC expanded taking two WAC schools, that would have killed the WAC, now they are still alive and can steal our schools. WEBER ISN'T GOING FOLKS.

This was my thought as well. I really like what the Big Sky has done with the new members and think that Weber is in a great spot but I can't help but think how much fun it would be to be with USU in the WAC. I attended a UDOT conference about 2 months ago where the director of UDOT was discussing growth in the state. Davis and Weber counties are expected to boom in the next 20 years. In fact there will be more people in the Davis/Weber County area than Utah County in the next 20 to 40 years. That being said Weber has a huge upside as far as potential TV market and fan base growth. If Weber and USU worked a similar situation like BYU and Utah did for years it really could be a good thing.

HELL!! The MWC totally screwed me over, but then again, they never flat out said that they weren't taking anyone else. Didn't they say the same thing right before Boise was added? Hmmm.... ;)

Gowildcats is right. Weber/Davis is where the majority of growth is going to happen in the next 20+ years (not Cache, sorry USU), which means Weber will be in a great position. USU's only option to really grow and take advantage of the growth is to get into a conference with the Cats. I'm sure that they are seeing that now. Way to say no a few months ago Ags LOOOOOOL!
