Post Game Reflections: Montana

Post your analysis of the game. Should be a lot of interesting discussion! Can't write anything up yet, have a ton to do today.

I love, love the fact we've held two opponents under 20 pts in a row.

But we still gave up over 500 yards. That could still spell trouble against superior opponents.

Not sure there is much to reflect upon. Could wish this or that, but D played well with a couple exceptions and offense made enough plays to win the game. Not sure we executed the game plan well on offense, but that is the side of the ball we can get away with it. Am sure the coaches will look to improve performance in all phases. Noted improvement in LB coverage today :-) Looking forward to playing well against CP and imposing our will.

We didn't execute the game plan well offensively, but give credit to their defense. They were able to get a lot of pressure on Gubrud and force him into some mistakes. We made up for that lack of execution with a few explosive plays, and that was that.

The "D" played really well, especially the line. Really thought our defensive ends owned their line which led to their QB spending a lot of time on the ground.

I wish it could have been a little prettier, but all in all a very solid win.

Sincere question: Can you give up 540 and say you played really well on D?

I'm not casting judgement and honestly want to know.

Agree with Ranger that the box score surprised me.

Agree with Lucky that the LB's made some great stops.

Montana dinked and dunked their way down the field, but our defense tightened up in the red zone. I think you can give up a bunch of yards and still say the defense played well if you're limiting the other team in the red zone and creating turnovers.

Wish I hadn't looked at box score. Surprised on TOP number...thought we had the ball longer specially on a couple of those long drives, Thought the "D" played really good but 540 yards? And I really felt we were in control of this game...James Brown and I feel good!

my biggest takeaway from this game is that we were by far the more physical team. Their qb was getting punished on every snap towards the end of the game. Ebukam was in beast mode out there.

Do any Montana fans out there have an update on the player that was injured? He didn't look too good when they were helping off the field.

He looked to be severely concussed. On the Grizz board they're saying that it's his second of the season. I wouldn't be surprised if he's done for 2016.

Good win Eags. You guys are legit. This was my write up on Egriz as that place is going to be a dumpster fire for a bit:

I love that we have such a rich, prideful tradition that we (As fans) expect to win every single game. That is a very good problem to have. But, at the same time, we gotta be realistic.

We just played a very, very good team and they beat us.....in their house. We made some plays, and they made more. They are the #3 team in the country for a reason. They are actually ranked low IMO. They have a better resume and much better strength of schedule than Sam Houston or Jack St and probably could just as easily be the #1 ranked team.

They have the best offense in FCS and the most dangerous trio of receivers in all of FCS, and actually probably better than many FBS teams. Their QB already owns 6 out of 10 EWU QB records, and that is following up people like BLM and Vernon Adams.

Everyone I talked to, I said I expect the Griz to compete and play well but they probably won't win. Just too young and not the same talent level as EWU. Of course I want these guys to win every single game, but that's not realistic. That's not realistic for any team, including NDSU and Alabama. Sometimes you get best by a better team. That's what happened today. No reason to jump off a cliff over it. I'll be there Saturday to cheer them on while they start their 3 wins in a row to secure a playoff bid.

thanks for the complements and I think you had a good assessment. the saying "you're never as good as you look in a win or as bad as you look in a loss" (or words to that effect) definitely ring true. you guys killed us last year in missoula but a lot can happen in a year. this might just be a down year for montana or your coaching staff still needs time to get their type of players in the system. either way, good luck the rest of the way.

Sorry to hear that. Here's to a speedy recovery.

Going by the eyeball test I'd give the defense an A. The Dline dominated but for a couple of big plays the Griz offense were shut down in the 2nd half. It even seemed to me like the Griz gave up in the 4th qtr.
Offense gets a C in my book. The pressure they were putting on Gage in the 1st half rattled him into making bad throws. The Eagles could/should have scored 2x more TD's for a total score of 50.

One thing that concerns me is Gage seems to struggle a bit in the wind and rain. I hope it doesn't cost us in a tight playoff game.

Other obvious observations, our top 3 receivers are badass and completely unguardable, our defense has progressed dramatically and is quickly becoming very good, and this is the best team we have had since 2010.

Sincere question: Can you give up 540 and say you played really well on D?

I'm not casting judgement and honestly want to know.

Agree with Ranger that the box score surprised me.

I think that's a good question. I do think you can give up 540, and say you played really well on D. If you think about the flipside, if we don't rack up offensive stats, can you say the offense played well? Sure, maybe they received short field situations, or special teams and defensive scores reduced the amount of opportunities the offense had, etc.

In this case, looking at the drive chart, I think the D did some really good things. Out of 14 drives the Griz had, we forced 6 punts, one turnover on downs, and two interceptions. Additionally, when the Griz were desperately trying to pad the score at the end, the D kept them out of the end zone. So, over 2/3rds of the drives ended without points due to the efforts of the defense. Additionally, two of the scoring drives were held to field goal attempts, one of which was missed. I will take that, because I think more often than not, we will score touchdowns rather than FG's. Give up three so we can get seven...I'll take it.

The first TD that the Griz scored was due to a very short field. We punted out of our endzone, and Nguyen returned it from the 40 to the 23. So our D gave up 23 yrds at the beginning of the game for a TD. That's a pretty tough spot to put the D in. I don't call that a defensive failure. Our offense put them in a tough position at the beginning of the game.

The Griz scored a FG at the end of the half. That was it. That was all our D gave up in the first half. And then six points in the second half. Give them some yards. I don't care, if it doesn't result in scores.

I think we all can agree we've seen flashes of brilliance for extended stretches from our defense. It seems to me they are putting it together more and more. The Griz had their best receiver back on the field, and a QB that torched us last year, and held them to a significantly lower output. I know it's not the same Griz as last year, but this was not a bad offense we just went against. And our D just held them to their lowest scoring output of the season. Many, including me thought this would be a track meet. But I think our D is on the rise, and that is a very exciting thing to see!

That being said, I think the triple option is an odd offense to defend. EWU has historically handled it pretty well, but I still think this will be a big test. But what's great is that I think every player on the team views every week as a big test. They are not looking past anyone. And if they play focused, this team can go all the way!

To your point on TOP. We only had 4 minutes of TOP half way through the 2nd qtr. (I watch the live stats pg during games) Defense was on the field most of the first half and gave up some yards but not a lot of points; so mission accomplished. One explosive run play was the sole big play in first half. Conclusion: Defense played spectacularly. If they play eyes up this week against CP, it won't be close.
