Post Game Thread - OSU

Would've been good to see a run play on 1st down and Goal inside the 5, then set up play action on second or third, also the option worked well. The more balanced play calling was favorable for T.O.P and kept OSU from scoring more points. Glanville had alot of underclassmen playing, this team will improve and watchout in the next couple of years.

Anyone know the deal with McClintock. Not sure if he played after the first series.

Was he Injured? Holding him out to avoid injury? Being at the game, I had no announcers to find out what was going on.

Good game. I was impressed by both offense and defense. We look really good on QB this year. I was glad that Connor was able to score the TD himself - what a guy! I also liked the *really* favorable comments by the FSN guys.

Some thoughts about the game today.

Wow, I can't remember rain like that in week 1 in a long, long time. Made for a rainy tailgate.

First off, Oregon State looked really sharp for the first game of the year. Only 5 penalties and zero turnovers.

Let's start with the bad. The first OSU drive. Ford was beat bad. I realize it's Rodgers, but where in the hell were our safeties? I noticed that Ford got caught a series or two later cheating deep that led to a wide open short pattern. Hey, better than getting beat deep again I guess. That, the fumble, and a couple of penalties put us in a hole. The ability to get a field goal attempt off without getting tipped is frustrating. The 1 play scoring drive to start the 2nd half didn't help. I was busy having a beer in the parking lot, so I missed it, so it didn't sting so bad. Oh, and too many dropped passes.

The good. We moved the ball on a pretty darn good defensive front. Yeah, their secondary is young, but overall, this is a good defense. Offensive line! Zero sacks. Let me repeat that for everyone that's sat through the last two years. Zero sacks. Also, zero interceptions with 41 pass attempts. Good good good. It seems that Fry is the go-to guy that Mario was last year. Makes me drool over the thought of Fry and Mario on the field together as the two slotbacks. Maybe next year. JG wants to run more, and I like it. We don't have a breakaway back, but the run can add so much. To add to that, the shotgun single back set looks, dare I say, 'spread-ish.' Nice hang time on the punts. 4 of 5 inside the 20. That'll work.

All in all, I think I was pretty pleased with what I saw today. It would have been nice to see a few more points on the board for the amount that we moved the ball. One thing in the red zone that stands out is our lack of the tall receiver that can go up and get it on a end zone fade route. It really make the field much smaller. A couple of drop down 6-3 receivers would be nice. Get on it Jerry. ;-)

Marty always has some of the best analysis on this forum.

My observations:

Good:
- Great o-line protection for Drew.
- Drew had great passes.
- PSU had a lot of possession time.

Needs work -
- Too many dropped passes
- Poor special teams play
- Poor execution in the red zone.

I would like Connor Kavanaugh to see more series. We need his mobility. He showed it by scoring the only PSU touchdown. Drew shuts down in the red zone.

Beseda's take:

Seems that he sees the positive that we do as well.

Oh, and one more thought...

Was OSU actually passing with under two minutes to go in the game? Seemed a little odd.

Additinional comments: Connor needs to play a set of series in each game. His running ability is something that PSU could really use. The kid is a gamer. Please put him in coach.

A random thought: If somehow you could combine Hubel w/Kavanaugh you would have one heck of a quarterback. Hubel is just a natural thrower (and except for a few attempts) was very good yesterday, and boy, Kavanaugh has some wheels. I could see Hubel playing QB about 75% of the time and Kavanaugh 25%. Their talents compliment each other. I'll write more about yesterday's game when I have more time, but in a nutshell, Portland State looks to be a team that will continue to improve during the season .

It was a good game for PSU! 1) they were not intimidated, especially our offense. Though we didn't really get deep on OSU's secondary (only Wolverton's 35 yard catch to the 2 yard line), OSU couldn't stop the quick, short (7-10) yard routes. We'll need to work on getting more yards after the catch. 2) offensive line did a really good job protecting Hubel - no sacks and he looked hurried only a couple/three times. It was good to see Drew run out of the pocket on one of our series; got the first down too! A few of those will make the linebackers play up vs. dropping back deep in to coverage. 3) defensive pressure up front allowed our linebackers to do some good run work against OSU's line. Rodgers is tough, tougher when you get 2-3 linemen out in front. Yet there were some good, legitimate hits put on him by PSU linebackers, safeties and corners. 4) Tracey Ford didn't get beat on the 1st play of the game; it was Worthen. Tracey plays as the left side corner. This was nothing more than a missed assignment in the defensive secondary between Shead and Worthen. Worthen was supposed to read run and cover the flat; Shead was supposed to read and then go with the slot. Shead read run, released the slot to Worthen, but Worthen read run first, then saw that Shead didn't go with the slot...all it took was about 2 yards and bingo, 87 yard TD. Good play on OSU's part, poor execution on ours.

Very rarely did OSU play pass to Shead's side of the field, nor did they run to our strong safety side often. Jordan Brown got a great hit on Rodgers at the 2 yard line, but the JumboTron didn't want to show that! Of course next play they just ran to their right side, sealed everything off and Rodgers walked in to the endzone. I'm looking forward to the SOU game! Now it will be up to the coaching staff to make adjustments on our special teams...we need to get at least to our 30-35 to start the offense, and perform better inside the 5 yard line..I watched enough Fall Camp to know we have effective plays in that area; just have to call them. Punting game looked great. Kick-off coverage will need some work, but I'm confident we will do better against SOU. GO VIKS!!!!!

Without a doubt there was improvement. Not imtimidated in anyway. Had to keep reminding myself we were playing up.

Final score could have been 34-17 with a break here or there.

The early missed field goal looked bad. We didn't appear ready. A time out may have been necessary.

My bad on saying Ford was beat on that play. Just watched the game on DVR, and I guess I thought that he'd come from that other side since he was in pursuit.

Man, we really had a good opening drive going. We really dug ourselves a hole in a hurry.
