I saw an article done by the Bleacher Report that was naming Troy Huff as the Big Sky Player of the year.

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/...ar-in-every-ncaa-basketball-conference/page/9

Huff was impressive last year but I think that Jamar or even Berry are the front runners for that award. The only way I don't see either one of those two win the award is if both Montana and Weber State finish in the bottom of the Sky (which I don't see happening)

Of the three you mentioned, I would say that Huff would be my third choice. It probably will come down to whoever's team wins the BSC and hosts the tournament. Huff does a lot for his team, but it is not really a well balanced team. He has to do a lot for that team to have a chance to win. The best player is Berry. We just don't rely on him as much as they do Huff. Jamar may stand out more than last year, due to Montana losing a majority of their talent. It will be hard to argue against the winning team's top guy. Huff can win it if his team can win it. We will see. I wouldn't bet against Berry and the Wildcats. Tres and Wheels may have a shot at it as well. The kid up at Eastern would have a shot at it if his team didn't suck so much.

that article was pretty good, then i was like where is the next paragraph surely there are more than 2. then not.

Here is the thing about Berry. He is the best point guard we have, the best off guard, and the best small forward. He would easily be all BSC at any of those positions. He could probably play power forward, but it would be a huge waist of his talent. He is playing the 3 spot because that is the best use of his talents for the players we have on the team. He plays team ball, is one of the best passers and ball handlers in our league. He is fast, athletic and really understands the game. He will play at the next level, probably as a combo guard. :thumb: :thumb:

You are going to see a lot of scouts at the Dee this year. :coffee:

All those things could be said about Jamar and most of them about Huff. They are all very good players, but I do think Huff is the front runner POY because he will have to (and likely will) put up big numbers for his team to win. Jamar and Berry will have lots of help.

I guess the real question is to look at the games they play head to head since they will most likely be guarding each other. I can see Huff putting up big numbers except for the four times he plays Berry and Jamar. yes, Huff is a great rebounder but I didn't see the defensive skill to stop those two. Both Berry and Jamar are better defensive players. But in reality, we can talk all we want and say stuff, but the players will be the ones to show up or shut up all of this speculation.

Agreed...POY honors should go to the BEST all-around player. Not the best offensive player. Huff, he is a hell of a good player, best in the league?? Who knows, most of last year he was injured. If he has a full season under his belt, I could see him being the type of player the Sioux need to make a title run, but he will need to have a POY type season for the Sioux to do that. Berry in my opinion, is the best overall player, but the Cats have a lot of weapons. The most in the Sky. Weber is the deepest and most talented team in the Sky. Weber has three guys who could be legitimate 1st teamers, possibly 5 first team candidates (our starting 5). Weber has multiple guys who can be Freshman of the year, Newcomer of the year, Defensive player of the year and if the league had such an award, sixth man. Jamar, like Huff, will need to be POY of the year and then some to help the Grizz repeat. Jamar has the least amount of help, compared to Berry and Huff out of the three top candidates. The Grizz have talent and will be good, as good? No...the loss of Ward and Cherry are really going to sting for the Grizz. Gregory, DeShields, Bradshaw, Martin, Hutch, Kemp, and Wiley will be good for the Grizz but compared to the Cats and team formerly known as the Fighting Sioux, not enough. Are they even better than an Improved and experienced Bobcat team in Bozeman? Or a youthful but highly talented team in Cheney, or even an experienced and refined team from Greeley? Who knows. That's why I think Jamar, if the Grizz get back to the Championship, probably will be the man who wins the POY. But I think it will be either Berry or Huff. Tresnak could be a candidate too!! Others? Garrity at Sac, Russel at NAU, Unruh or Bearden at UNCO, and Bigalow at MSU.

Is the Sky better?? Who knows. On paper, how couldn't it be? With how piss poor the league was last season, things can only get better. I think we will see improved play from ISU, MSU, UNCO, and NAU. SUU is rebuilding, SAC should be alright, but losing Vetoteo isn't going to help things, and PSU...well PSU has a lot of new faces. UM, will not be as talented, but will still be formidable. EWU is a dark horse, with a very young team, and finally, UND will be talented, experienced, and healthy. They have some depth, but nothing like the Cats. UND is the next best team in the league after the Cats. Followed by UM, EWU/MSU, and UNCO. We need our conference mates to win more OOC games and get the Sky a little more respect.

My feeling is that the league will be stronger. We had a bunch of new coaches last year and we still have a couple of teams rebuilding. I don't think that anyone will waltz through the league unscathed. I don't think there are any teams west of the Mississippi who would make it through our league without a loss. PAC12, I don't think so. They would never play any of us on the road. They know that they would get their butts handed to them. Gonzaga, maybe. They would have to play us at our place. It would be a great game. Same with BYU and St Mary's. Utah wouldn't finish in the top five of the BSC. USU would probably be a top three in our league. :coffee:

jamar, uh, current mvp should be the frontrunner. huff had big numbers though last yr so he could be really good in 2014 and contend for the mvp award. berry could have been mvp had wsu hosted and we were only back 1 game when all was said and done.

so what for 2014? all 3 are seniors. berry and jamar have the best chance of being on the best team i think. weber and griz have been the top two teams for the past 2 seasons and they are the top 2 teams in the league historically on average (of course weber being 1st :-D ). but und could easily be in the top 2 look at last year. they had an amazing season year one though the coaches did preseason pick them 4th.

just based on stats huff will be the top guy all season but don't forget rodney stuckey was an nba first rd pick and didnt win mvp, patten did. so its not all about the points scored when the big sky coaches are making the call. its not a fan vote. another question is will any of the big sky teams be able to stop, or slow down huff when we play him??????

being a senior helps in the big sky for making 1st team but for mvp finishing first place is just about the best thing you can do, be the best player on the regular season champion (and don't be the non hosting team of co-champs  ).

mvp's during the rahe era:
7 mvps (1 soph, 3 juniors, 3 seniors), (6 1st place teams, 1 2nd place)

2012-13 Kareem Jamar, UM - junior - 1st place
2011-12 Damian Lillard, Weber State - junior - 2nd place
2010-11 Devon Beitzel, UNC - senior - 1st place
2009-10 Damian Lillard, Weber State - sophomore - 1st place
2008-09 Kellen McCoy, Weber State - senior - 1st place
2007-08 Jeremiah Dominguez, PSU - junior - 1st place
2006-07 David Patten, Weber State - senior - 1st place

I just don't think that Huff will win. In the three games last year I felt like he played well in one half. I think UND's coach isn't very good. In the game in Ogden last year, he wasn't making adjustments. There was a lot of iso and he was forcing his best players to create stuff for themselves.

The problem with a Weber player getting POY, is that we will be so balanced this year that I think that different guys are going to have big games every night and we will have all of our starters with good stat lines.
