Pre- preseason 2013 poll

2. Eastern Washington - The returning talent is impressive, even after record- setting wide receiver Brandon Kaufman's decision to enter the NFL Draft as a junior-eligible prospect. Quarterback Vernon Adams, linebacker Ronnie Hamlin, cornerback T.J. Lee, a stable of running backs to follow a veteran offensive line. Still, the Eagles (FCS champions in 2010 and semifinalists this season) might have to play on the road in the postseason because their regular-season schedule is a doozy, including road games at Oregon State, Toledo, Sam Houston State, Montana and Cal Poly as well as a home game with Montana State.

Interesting that they get it, our AD doesn't seem to. Requiring the team to win at least win 2 out of the 5 road games mentioned and probably sweep the rest JUST TO GET INTO the playoffs is working against the team. Let's hope Chaves is behind the scenes right now dumping Oregon State or Toledo for an FCS home game.

Truth is, we probably need to be at least 2-2 coming out of our first four to have a legitimate shot. That means we likely need a road win over Oregon State, Toledo, or Sam Houston State. Very, very unfortunate scheduling... I pray this isn't a repeat of 2011 where we just scheduled ourselves right out of the mix.

I know people are making a lot about the scheduling but I would think that coach has input as well. This schedule gets us ready to make a deep run in the play-offs. Look at the schedule that Sam Houston played with almost all their games on the road. Talent wins and we have the talent and the coaching.

This schedule makes it as difficult as possible for us to make the playoffs...

We will see how it goes next year, Toledo and OSU are worlds better than Idaho and WSU.

We could have a great schedule next year if we swapped Toledo with a home FCS game...

We were railed on for putting down our 2011 schedule as well...

Just want whats best for the program...

OH NO HERE WE GO AGAIN WITH THE SCHEDULE! :pissed: :pissed:

If you think the complaining is bad now, wait to see what happens if we lose 4 or 5 games including competitive losses. You don't have to worry about me, I'll still be here. But Eastern will slip back into obscurity with the casual fan, and that's where the real problems exist.

It's hard for me to believe we can raise scores of millions of $$$ of capital to build our stadium expansion, but can't fucking kick up $150k to get out of a wrecklessly scheduled game at Toledo. It is VERY hard for me to believe NO OTHER FCS school was available for under $100k on that weekend.

I get it, some people are sick of the bitching... but I'm sick of these high-risk schedules. History teaches that teams that win championships at this level play advantageous schedules, and we don't do it. And it isn't as though this is just "an Eastern thing," because no other AD was putting these out until now.

The only way we get that Toledo game off the schedule is if they (Toledo) get a contract with a BCS school...similar to what happened with us in 2010 with Oregon State and why we ended up playing Nevada instead. In that scenario, they would have to buy us out and it would free us up to maybe bring in another FCS team. My vote goes to Prairie View A & M or Savannah State! :thumb:

What we should really work to be trying to change is that Division II game. It does nothing for us other than add another home game, which will bring in revenue but that's about it.

I'm not thrilled about the schedule, either, but it is what it is. Chaves job is to set the team up with the most advantageous schedule while also keeping the entire AD in the green...or black, or whatever. BUT - what I will say is that we absolutely HAVE to have that second FBS game, why not schedule another one with the Pac-12, Big 10, etc? We played Colorado and Texas Tech in 2008, and those were both great games that we the program made a lot of money off of. Although it's no coincidence that 2008 was a year we came one win short of the playoffs. (2008 and 2011).

I've challenged Dopa and Marc a bunch on this issue but they have won me over and are absolutely correct on this issue. If want to look beyond our own examples of 08 and 11 check out Towson and UNI from last season. UNI played Wisconsin and Iowa very close but got beat up and never recovered. It definitely cost Towson a playoff spot. Either one of these teams could have won games in the playoffs. :twocents:

As far as I can tell UNLV is open the weekend we have Toledo scheduled.

As of a couple weeks ago, South Dakota was open the week of the Toledo game and was looking for a game, which boggles my mind as to why we didn't go for a home/home in that series...the return game easily could have been this year in place of Toledo.

Absolutely, Eastern's program is cash strapped, always has been so I get playing 1 FBS game, I just don't get playing 2.

Money comes from winning. It sucks, but its the truth. We win, more fans show up, more fans show up, more $$$ comes into the school and program. I would rather risk paying $50-$100K to bring in an FCS team and have a shot at a decent playoff run, then taking around $200K for a difficult FBS game across the country which could hurt our playoff seeding or chances.

Without looking at the actual books, I totally agree. But there has got to be more to the equation than that. Chaves is not an idiot.

I completely agree, I'm sure there is more to it, I just have no idea what it is, I'm sure there is a lot more to the story than we all know...

I would love to see us get some revenge on those clowns.

How many charters did we take last year? Traveling to ND, Cal Poly, No Col will probably be good candidates for a charter this year. Others? Any idea what a charter costs? Could it be that we need those money games to offset increasing charter costs?
Are we getting in the 500k range for the OSU game? A 350k payday for Toledo will certainly help cover those costs.
