Pre-Season Questions for Marshall Sperbeck?

Hi all, I'm happy to get some questions answered from Coach Sperbeck again if there's interest amongst the posters this year.

As in years past, post your questions and (IF THEY'RE APPROPRIATE AND WON'T MAKE HIM HATE US FOREVER, LOL) I will get in touch with him.

I'll get the ball rolling...

1. With five of the first six games on the road, do you enter camp with an emphasis on a "road warrior" mentality for your players?

2. In years past, some players have suffered major injuries against FBS opponents (seemingly moreso than in games against FCS foes). In 2008 Bryan Hilliard and Jason Smith both were dinged up against Colorado State in a heartbreaking loss. Last year, McLeod Bethel-Thompson and Avery White suffered impactful injuries against Stanford.

Some SacBuzz.com followers believe the risk/reward isn't smart and that it would be prudent to play key players sparingly against Oregon State, while other believe we should compete against the PAC-12 foe as if they were any other FCS school. Do you have a coaching philosophy regarding player personnel in a game like this?

(Note to posters: I know what answer I'm going to get, but it'll be good to hear from the man himself. Probably will fire us all up too!)

3. Many posters were suprised to see John Taylor absent on the 2011 roster; we also know we're blessed with a glut of large, young O-Linemen. Are there any particular guys we should watch for in camp to step up?

4. The recruit YouTube videos and your mini interviews are a favorite and much appreciated. can we expect those to continue?

5. Does this year's team have a "motto" you can share with the fans?

6. Do you think the facility improvements (Broad, WELL, Turf) have had any impact on recruiting?

7. Wins, attendance, and general morale are up all across the board since your arrival (This was not a question, lol).

8. There's some "Buzz" about transfer WR T.J. Knowles from South Florida on the boards and amongst fans. He is a HUGE target and seems to be a gifted player who has just been looking for the right playing situation. Can you tell us some more about his game and how you see him contributing?

Kadeezy, I've always enjoyed your annual short-takes with Sperbeck.

Here's my $.02...

a). Will the team be using the same uniform design as last year even though Adidas is now sponsor?
b). Has the team fully adopted the new Duraspine turf as compared to the old natural turf?
c). Opportunity for some big home crowds this year, what is being done in the community to promote Hornet football?
d). New coaches, how have they assimilated into the Hornet Way?
e). Behind Nash, who do you see being the next 'Nash'?
f). Speed seems to be a big upgrade in recruits, what do you look for in prospects? Position player or athlete?
g). Whats your favorite part of the new Broad and Well?

I doubt he will touch too much on the current players, season opener is soon and loose lips sink ships. Knowles could easily be a hanging TE, or he could be a WR. Nice to keep the other side guessing.

PLAY TO WIN!

I have mixed feelings about how to play Oregon State. Yes, I want to play it like a legit game. But I ALSO want to get decent PT for the backups (a la an NFL pre-season game) so I have an idea of what they'll do later in the season if the starters go down. Personally, I'd give the 2s AT LEAST a series (preferrably in the second quarter) to get their feet wet. Some positions, of course (i.e. OL/DL, receivers, and the LBers) you're cycling people through to ensure that no one player is getting over tired. But I'd like to see backups at ALL positions, including QB, get at least a limited amout of PT in every game. That doesn't mean I don't trust the starter. I just want to make sure I can trust the backup when the starter breaks his leg in Game 10. So since that's how I'd treat EVERY game, that's by definition how I'd treat the Oregon State game. Of course, we expect more PT for the backups (perhaps even down to the 4s) when we have a D-II on the schedule.

The loss of Coach Brooks was very unfortunate, how is the team responding and are they using his passing for inspiration this season?

What is this teams goal for 2011? Is reaching the playoffs this year a stated goal?

Touching on a few already posted questions:

When will the new uniforms be unveiled?

Where can I buy a Hornet Addidas jacket and for how much?

What plans are in place or being implemented to generate more community/alumni/fan support/attendance/contributions?

Are there any facility upgrades being considered? (New scoreboard?)

After the tragic loss of Coach Brooks, who has taken over the strength and conditioning position? Do you see this tragic loss as an issue that will severely impact the physical preparation and development of the team? What has/is being done to fill this void until the position is filled?

I'll compile a list tonight and send it off... Camp starts Monday and time contraints might limit his ability to respond after this weekend.

Try to add your Qs by this evening if you want them considered by coach.

With Coach Adams leaving for SJSU, will you be resuming OC duties full time?

Any drastic changes to the offense? or just some additional "tweaks"? (Pistol formation was mentioned on another thread)

Same question for the defense?

Will last years and this years recruiting class make much of an impact this season? Noticed a few names left off the roster from this years and last years recruiting classes, any reasons as to why?

The Questions have been sent!

I had to filter some duplicates and specific questions about our type of offense, etc.

Coach answered all 16 questions I sent his way!

Stay tuned for the answer post (need to get to a PC)...
