Prediction Thread EWU 37 @ UC Davis 14 Sep 27th

Gonna take a flyer on this one. Third game in a row on the road. Last one was tough. Some of our players will be able to have friends and family in the stands that can't make it to Cheney ...

To end the suspense; EWU goes 4 - 1 on the season.

Flyer: D scores a touchdown and forces 5 or more stops. Run as much as we throw about 35 times each, have 450 yards of total offense, possess the ball 34+ minutes, Kupp scores on a fly sweep run and a reception, VA is efficient completing 78% of his throws, no INT's, the TE's catch more than 2 passes, Tally gets a sack off the edge rush, D holds UC Davis under 350 yds, Forte goes over 100 again and 2 TD's, UC Davis wins the toss and opts to receive.

Sunny, clear and 74 degrees at kickoff

EWU 48 (incl D's TD) -- UC Davis 26

This team has played us very tough in the past and have had a week to prepare. I am going conservative this week. EWU 42 UC Davis 35

The best bet? The over. Eastern should move the ball all over UC Davis... defense will again be tested, although this is an offense that hasn't done much all year. I'd *REALLY* like to see the D hold these guys to 30 points or less and 400 yards of offense or less. Those are generous amounts as-is, but this unit needs to show some improvement.

FYI, Colorado State has a pretty run-of-the-mill offense-- all respect to Coach Mac--- and they put over 600 yards on the Aggies. Even if the defense lays an egg, the offense should be able to pick up the slack.

Last week I wishfully predicted that our D would come into it's own and the Bobcats would only score 21.....did I mention that I meant by the end of the first quarter? I really hope we see some improvement this week (really over the next four weeks) and would be pleased with Dopa's prediction.

I think part of this equation is running the ball even more than we have the first four games. I think we have the offensive line to wear down a team like UC Davis, and that will keep to keep the defense off of the field. I don't want to see another shootout against a team like this. I want to see us get some points on the board early and them grind em out and keep their yards and points in check.

63-31 - EWU wins.

Davis keeps it close enough for EWU starters to stay in the game deep into the 2nd half and put up big numbers.

Davis has to go with their strength which is a power running attack. If they can pop a couple of big runs, that will open up their play action. I don't think they have the QB to consistently make those throws but we can't rely upon that.

Our defense will slowly improve and I think the game will slow down tremendously compared to our last few opponents. This is a good matchup for us to have at this point.

43 - 17. Defense brings it together like we know they can.

I'll take this one, please!!! I'd love to see the D find their shutdown game. But anything under 30 points and 400 yards will work for me. I know they're beat up, but if we can keep working towards health and make incremental improvements each week, they can still get it to come together.

Comon Dopa, don't you think EVERYONE would like to see a shutdown defense? Your negative message about defense is old, really old.

Easy, Mr. Poopy Pants. It must be raining in the Valley today.

I'm not negative on the defense at all. Fact is, we're pretty bad on that side of the ball right now. I recognize that they have some obstacles with injuries and having played against a couple of quality offenses in the last two outings. But I assert that under 30 points and 400 yards is good incremental improvement from where we've been, and it seems reasonable given the team we're playing this week.

The only way this team has a shot to be a legit title contender is if the defense improves. Getting healthy and getting a little bit better each week is a lot more likely than suddenly becoming a brick wall.

If they manage to outperform that, all credit to the guys.
