Preseason Schedule Rant - Jerry this is for you!

To Jerry Bovee or Randy Rahe or whoever does the stupid basketball scheduling:

The Preseason schedule this year is one of the worst in recent memory. I can understand 2 games against non-DI opponents (e.g., Laval & Western New Mexico) at the beginning of the season. BUT, at this point in the season, you should be playing only D I schools. Colorado Christian and University of the Southwest are games I don't give a crap about. Those games are a total waste of my time and money. As a season ticket holder, I find this offensive.

Next year, if there are four non-DI schools on the preseason schedule, I seriously doubt I will waste my money on season tickets. Some of you will say "you should be a die-hard fan and support them no matter who they play." I say bull crap to that. Weber is a Division I school and should act like it. Don't play a bunch of crappy teams during preseason. There are only two home games worth attending: byu and Seattle.

I don't expect you to bring in Kansas, Georgetown, Florida, Michigan State, etc... How about a home and home with some Big West, WAC, WCC, Sun Belt, or any other DI teams? I would even go for a 2 for 1 deal over the crappy schedule we have this year. I would rather have 4 quality DI home games than have 6 home games in the preseason, with only 2 of them being quality games.

Weber plays in a 1-bid conference and so if you lose in the preseason, it really doesn't matter much. Playing tough competition will make you a better team in the long run. Play some 2 for 1 series and improve the preseason schedule.

Respect your fans and don't waste our time and money with such a crappy preseason schedule.

Amen Waldo!

Are UNLV, Nevada, Idaho, Boise State, Wyoming, Colorado, Denver, Colorado State, Air Force, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Arizona, and Arizona State that scared to come to the Dee? I would even give a few of the MWC schools a 2-for-1 type deal. Heck, I would even take a team like UC-Santa Barbara or Long Beach State like we used to play. This D-II stuff is a joke.

I agree that the schedule is very weak. I know better teams means more attendance and gets our team better and stronger. However, in defense to Coach Rahe and Bovee, they have not a team that dares come here to play. I listened to Rahe on the half time show when the football team was playing Montana. And Rahe told us that he calls and calls but others teams are not interested in coming here and losing. Simply WSU basketball is proven too good at home. That's a good thing, but at the same time not... In a way. We needed to finally get some games on our schedule since no teams would come in, coach Rahe said they ended up having to join the field in Alaska to get some games on thd schedule. If they are trying for 2-1 games and even using money as a motive to get teams here and tha still fails, we have to go with what we can get, henc. Colorado Christian....

I might be able to shed some light on the issue. Jerry and Randy have a lot of hurdles with scheduling. Not having a lot of money, being a low mid-major, and having a basketball arena that is extremely difficult to play in doesn't make things very easy for them.

Believe me when I say this, Randy does everything he can to get DI teams to come to the Dee. Plain and simple, one HUGE reason why the gutles Utes are refusing to play Weber at home, is the clear cut fact that playing at Weber is extremely difficult. Teams are afraid!! And HELL, they should be. The Purple Palace is an extremely difficult place to get a W in.

MONEY and Pride are big issues too. Regrettably, the Big Sky doesn't have the greatest reputation or the best RPI. It has in the past and its getting better, but it is nowhere close to where it once was. The WCC looks down their nose at the Sky, which is funny, because its a one horse conference (St. Mary's has been good the past couple years, but Gonzaga is all the conference is known for, I guess having the Y in the conference, might be somewhat beneficial for Weber; BYU will continue to play Weber home and home so that might be an incentive to get other WCC teams to come to Ogden), The Big West is full of Cali teams that will only travel if they get $$$, the WAC, well, Weber gets to play the best WAC team every year, and we compete with them (this season, they wouldn't have won in the Dee), so that means the other WAC teams wont be coming anywhere close to Ogden, since they are significantly worse. As for the MWC, Weber plays two members annually, but the others, once again are to prideful or scared to play here. Yeah, UNLV and New Mexico beat Weber on their home floors, but they know they wouldn't win in Ogden. Hell, New Mexico rarely leaves the safe confines of the Pit in the preseason, hence why they are ranked every year, till the conference season, when they have to leave and they get beat. I'd like to see MVC or Summit teams every once in a while, but that would take $$$ to get them here. Finally, why not Utah DII's or NAIAs (Dixie adn Westminster)? Its all about scheduling issues. As for UVU there is a conflict between a coach and a former institution he worked for, but I've heard that issue has been resolved and that the teams will be playing each other in the future.

Last but not least, WEBER HAS NO $$$. Weber has to make $$$ off of their teams. Jerry is put in a bad spot each year with football. He has to make so much dough to help subsidize the program and the department, hence why the football team ends up playing a couple of FBS teams each year. Jerry, wants to find team who Weber has a shot against, but they wont play us now either. No FBS team wants to lose to an FCS team. Next year, Weber could pull off two W's if things go their way.

If the women's team can get Oregon State, Boise State, and Nevada on thier home schedule;

Why cant the Men's?

Hell Oregon State, Idaho, and Portland is playing at Montana this year. Montana State is playing home to Central Michigan, Wyoming is playing at Northern Colorado, Eastern plays at home to Idaho, San Jose St. Idaho State is playing Troy and Western Michigan at home. Air Force is playing at NAU. Sac and Portland St are'nt playing anybody.

Im beginning to believe that Money has nothing to do with it, Dont you think if Montana can "afford" Oregon State Weber could? NAU HAS NO MONEY but they can afford Air Force and we cant?

Im beggining to believe the reason nobody will come play here, is because they have no balls.

a. we can't afford to bring in better teams
b. no one dares to come to the dee since we are a very good low mid major they dont want the loss to a big sky team
c. we aren't interested in doing 2 for 1's or no one bigger will take it

A + B + C = D (2's.)

There is one good thing for either this next year or the following year. By being a road team in the Bracket buster in February, we are guaranteed a quality D1 school to come here. Hopefully that well help us get more teams to come to the Dee, hell i would rather have a stronger road schedule because road games shows more character in a team than home games. Why do you think the school to the north always has 30 wins because they don't want to go on the road to play. SO Bovee and Rahe, you are doing a great job in the schedule, but of course i would like to see some better quality teams but keep up the good work.

OK - I can see why it is difficult to get people to come (no $ and a tough place to play).

So, you will have to be more creative or do something unorthodox to get a quality preseason schedule.

How about a home and home series with the other Utah schools (USU, UVU, SUU). That would give you 3 quality home games each year (at least until SUU joins the Sky). I know USU claims they have a hard time getting people to play in Logan (my guess is the same is true for Cedar and Orem).

You could find a corporate sponsor to do a tournament - Peterson Inc Basketball Tournament has a nice ring to it.

Go ahead and do a 2 for 1 now and then. But please do something to improve the preseason schedule.

I know for a FACT that Petersen Inc. would go for this for sure, if WSU could get more butts in the seats.
