President Search-

It looks like the University is looking to fill the open spot of Eastern Washington University president. It appears four candidates have been selected, one being Dr. May who is the current interim. Feels kind of like a nervous time for athletics in my opinion. Dr. May has been supportive so far of athletics, however new blood may bring in different perspectives. I'm terrible at attaching articles, but there is an article that states that those four candidates will be on campus next week and feedback can be given until next Friday. This may be something as fans we need to keep an eye on and let our voices be heard. You know that some of the tenured faculty will.

Hey Eager, meant to ask you if you happened to catch any of the interviews...I spaced it out. If you did what was your thoughts on applicants? Did May interview well...seems like what I've seen a nice enough guy and all in on EWU. Then I think if this is the same outfit who chose the last one anything can happen.

Most of these were done during my work day so I did not get the chance to watch many of the interviews. I did watch some of Doctor May's which I thought was good. In my interactions with him he has been pleasant. He has shown support for athletics and it appears our budgets have grown since he has taken his role. When looking at tenured staff, there recommendations were elsewhere. I know that Dr. May was low on their ranked list of candidates. It sounds like they have chosen Shari McMahan ( https://cdn.ewu.edu/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Shari-McMahan_BIO-CV.pdf ) to be our next University President. I really do not know much about her, but when I hear from some folks that have watched I will let you guys know. Let's hope the support for Eastern Athletics is strong and we can continue to grow our great University!

Let me know if anyone can find any of Shari's 50 peer reviewed articles
published over 50 journal articles, books chapters, monographs and reviews

She seemed to be good at pushing graduating on time and I interpreted another comment that she was working to pull in students from 2 year programs aka JC's. I may be misunderstanding this bit. That would be a good stop gap measure to improving short term enrollment issues. Other than that, she's been in the same school her whole academic career. Knowing that system is no guarantee she knows how to make it work somewhere else. If the faculty is all for her, that doesn't necessarily tickle my fancy bone either. Her marketing team has done a great job of pushing the exact same message across several platforms, not one link to any of her papers though. It's not in my hands but I'd bring in a business savvy person over an "academic" all day long. If anyone finds one of her actual articles, not just something she is cited as having reviewed it, please share.

I despised the last pick after reading more details of her programs, policies and real world outcomes but all those negatives didn't stop idiots from putting her in the role. This time there seems to be even less data and it's someone who has never run a sizable institution before... that's always a good sign :sarcasm: :sarcasm: :sarcasm:

Well, here’s the good news… she can’t be worse than the last gal.

I don’t know how excited I am to bring someone in from the California system, as that hasn’t been all that well functioning in a long time.

Nearly every one of her goals should be related to increasing enrollment and modernizing the university to fit better into today’s model. You can pretty much track every single problem the university has right now to diminishing enrollment. Fewer students mean less money for everyone, and it doesn’t take a genius to figure that out. If she can serve as an executive decision-maker who can really impact recruiting of students and rebranding the university, she’ll work out well. If she gets caught out in the weeds, ignoring financial concerns and punting on growth, she’ll fail.

The university is backed into a corner right now. Every decision should be focused around growth, and immediate growth probably takes precedence over long-term (obviously both are important, but results are needed now).

As we say in the South Dopa, "You ain't wrong" :thumb:

I have no idea if this was a factor in Dr. McMahan hire or not. I've always have thought one of the keys to increase enrollment at EWU was to focus on Hispanic enrollment. In 2019, EWU launched its HSI Initiative and convened a task force to identify strategies to (1) increase Hispanic/Latinx FTE enrollment to 25 percent by a stretch goal of 2023/2024 and (2) support Hispanic/Latinx students' educational success in the university through graduation.
Cal State San Bernardino is a proud Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), with a Hispanic undergraduate full-time student enrollment of 66 percent as of fall 2020, well above the HSI requirement of at least 25 percent. With her being provost and vice president for academic affairs at CSUB (enrollment 20,800) she is part of that aspect.

*CSUB plays D2 athletics and has no Football program. Time for reflection...hmmmm.
