Press conference October 23

I think this was the right move for 1 game. Hopefully this will squash some of the drama. I do have two questions and maybe Frank, VOTB, and PBP can help with these since they go to these press conferences.

First, If administration can't discuss Personnel matter, what can they discuss? And why can't they?
And please don't say ISU policy. Why is it ISU policy?

Second question, and again I think Coach K has been given a crappy hand to play with so I am not bashing his ability to coach, but when you are being suspended for a game, and your team has won 2 games in the last two years, what exactly is so funny, and why does he smile and seem so happy in these press conferences?

What does Kramer think is so damn funny in this press conference? :? I know I don't find being 1-6 AND being investigated by police as very funny.

E5:

Just my thoughts.

First, today in a society where the M.O. for just about anything is 'sue first and ask questions later,' ANYTHING that is said could possibly be used against someone. The philosophy of 'not talking' in sensitive matters is standard operating practice for any company or institution. This is nothing new or unusual. The government also has personal / privacy laws on the books ranging across many facets (like HEPA for example) that also come into play in matters like this. ISU doesn't 'say anything' because for the most part, the various local, state, legal laws do not permit them to.

Second, Mike is one of the most positive people I've ever met. His reactions through everything that has been going on, both on and off the field are not contrived. That is who he is...a positive, optimistic type who always tries to see the best of things. I think he also feels that brooding, being sullen or 'doom and gloom' is not going to help things including the attitude of his players so he stays away from it.

PBP

Thanks PBP. I have only been around him a couple of times and in no way would say I know him. Thats the only reason I ask. For fans or people on that side of the fence that is just how it looks.

The more likely thing is not being able to talk because of the investigation. Think about it...when you hire a coach and hold a press conference...that's a PERSONNEL DECISION. Just a happy one.

The folks that can get away with that are private schools. As I've learned at New Mexico...when you are a public institution, everything is public. All the emails are public, all the documents are public, all a media agency has to do is ask for them.

Generally speaking, you don't want to throw folks under a bus in certain instances (not this one), and that's when the personnel matter thing comes up. I've seen more open records requests here at UNM than I ever thought possible, but we are pretty open and transparent anyways.

Now, in that press conference, I think it was handled fine in that with the investigation going on, Jeff gave the statement, said there won't be any other comments, and then didn't take the bait when he got asked a question. I thought he presented himself and the statement very well.

Absolutely the investigation is playing a part in the silence as is my original point that if anything is said / admitted in public it could find its way into any type of civil suit / action.

Bottom line in my opinion, the less said the better until all the facts are in and the situation has gotten to a point where it can be resolved.

PBP

Also the ISUvoice story talks about those issues as well and why nobody is speaking. I had not seen that story before my first post.

I mean that's the real issue...this is a fast food/twitter society of I need it now I need it now I need it now, and that generally flies in the face of home ISU is handling it, which is until all the facts are known, nothing is said. The only thing I think that has been done wrong is that it should have been acknowledged earlier.

At UNM we had a hoops player get a DUI, and all Coach Alford did was craft a short statement through me that in effect said "We know there was an arrest for DUI, once we have all of the information, we will make a decision on what will be done, but until that time, we will not have anything further". Once he was ready, we released all the information.

Jeff is absolutely correct in not saying anything else at the press conference, and again, someone tried to get him to take the bait.

I don't care what folks say, Jeff is the right man for ISU and that job...he has a great track of facility improvement and fundraising and hiring coaches. How many folks have to handle an issue like the two he has had with the booster and this, and all the facts aren't out on either. He BLEEDS black and orange...
