Priorities for the 13th Grant

Judging by how our summer recruiting is going, it is my opinion that we are looking for a big guard/wing player to fill our last opening. If a summer transfer doesn't materialize, we seem to be looking for that dynamic wing who can go get a bucket at the end of a shot clock and shoot the three when needed.

We have already talked about Barnes out of Kansas. We are also looking at Brandon Younger, out of Georgia, a 6'6'' wing who can do it all. We are also showing interest in Naseem Gaskin and Charles Pride. Both of those guys have some pop to their game. Gaskin is a high level athlete who makes a living slashing to the basket and getting on the rim. Pride is a pure shooter. Both Barnes and Younger have complete games. They do a bit of everything. Barnes may be the better ball handler and shows some point guard skills, much like Bryan Alberts.

We have two already signed for the 2018 class, Spencer Johnson and Tim Fuller. Johnson is a 6'4'' guard with a point guard resume. Fuller is a 6'9'' PF with good athleticism.

We have all the pieces to be good now and for years to come. The one thing that can make us better is that big, dynamic wing player. I think we will end up with a player just like that. I'm very optimistic. We seem to have a lot of really good options.

Best case scenario...find a graduate transfer for a year, who can definitely contribute, and sign the best available high school player in the fall. I'm alright with finding a Jake Wiley type guy for a season; especially if we can get a major high school recruit too. We've done it before, Stan Rose and Stan Mayhew (maybe Randy needs to find a kid named Stan?) each only played a season for the Cats and ended up being major impact players.

I have a feeling that Randy is going to sign two kids this autumn. I know, we don't have the available grants, right now, for more than one (that is if Alberts doesn't commit to Weber), but I just have a feeling. It seems he is looking for a wing or another PG.

As for Alberts...this is just weird. To me, it is taking him a while because he is focusing on graduating this summer? But if he waits too long, he might not have a place to land. Regardless, I wonder what Randy's plan is. :?

Has Brenden Morris been awarded the 13th grant?
I don't think so, but why do you ask?

There really is no rush to fill it and it would be a little cruel to grant it and then have to take it away in 8 months. Unless it was like the Brown kid a few years back. He had a real financial hardship situation and took a grant with the understanding that it was for one year only. Everybody knew it, going in and going out. :coffee:

Have you heard something?

I heard we were still waiting and hoping for Prince Albert in a Can.

No, haven't heard a thing. Just assuming that that might be the decision based off of his performance and development over the past couple of years and the fact that there is an available scholarship. Yet, like you said, it would only be awarded this season and he would be a walkon again after this year. Seems somewhat cruel to do that to a kid but that is the world of NCAA Sports.

We can hope that Randy finds a diamond in the rough for the last scholarship. Hope is really all we have left.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with leaving that spot open all fall. We have some good prospects on our watch list for the 2018 class and I'm sure that there will be more by the time November signing rolls around. We have two senior guards and have two missionaries returning next spring, a big man and a guard. Adding a third guy to the 2018 class would seem to balance things out a bit, after bringing in 5 freshmen this year. I don't see us having any pressure to get someone right now. If we happen to have a great player fall into our laps, well then of course we would take them. Otherwise, wait it out.

I disagree...if at the end of the summer Randy has an available scholarship, I think he rewards a guy with a scholarship who has worked his guts out for the team and the program. Only issue is the NCAA. I don't think you can go from walkon to scholarship recipient and back to walkon and stay eligible. Maybe compliance can chime in on whether or not that can occur. To be honest, I don't know.

I do know that the NCAA had some special rules on that sort of thing, and it may be why Brown had to transfer after his scholarship year. At any rate, filling it now would be one of two situations. You either get a player who can contribute right now or you use the money for a charity situation. If the charity is truly needed and NCAA rules are tenable, then I can see it. Otherwise, it just may be a waste. It is certainly a consideration. There would also be a monetary savings that would have some carryover within the scholarship contributions fund. None of that money can be used for anything but scholarships, but it does lessen the burden on any institutional support. Those things are minor considerations. :coffee:

Consider this; Gonzaga has 10 players on scholarship right now, 11 if they retain Alberts. I'm sure that they are playing the transfer market right now, but this is a clear indication that it is all about quality and not quantity. Ideally a program wants both and injuries are always a monkey wrench to the potential great season. However, adding anything less than what you already have seems counter productive. Most winning programs play 8 to 10 players. Those beyond the 10th player are either being groomed for the future or will be expendable after the season. Those are just the facts. :coffee:

NCAA rules allow student-athletes to go from walk-on to scholarship and back to walk-on, with a few restrictions on that.

Okay, so what are the restrictions?

The biggest one is that they have to be given the opportunity for an appeal when aid is canceled. It could also affect their eligibility for a future one-semester award if aid is available at a later point.
