Problem/Cause?

Problem:
Lack of attendance/interest in the program.
Cause:
Practically everyone blames today's problem on John L. Smith, aka "the devil"! His quick coming and going is universally recognized as a serious blow from which the team has not yet recovered.
I know a few that believe the problem comes from the last years of Coach Mac's reign, saying that he allowed the program to decline through recruitment of too many "marginal character" players.
Many believe that Bovee's failure to hire someone to replace the interim "Sears" after his interim year has set the program back.

My opinion is that all of the factors mentioned above, plus others not mentioned, probably added fuel to the problem, but none are the real cause. The real cause is that Weber has never been a winning program. Even the coach with the most victories of any Weber coach, Dave Arslanian, only averaged about 6.1 victories per year. Those are certainly not the numbers of a winning program. Weber's winningest coach got no institutional support and still won more than he lost. Today, there is good institutional support. People will get excited if a program is a winner. By winner I mean a football program that gets 7-8 victories in a "down" year and can win 10 or 12 in a good year. A program that competes for a Big Sky championship every year and occasionally wins one. In the FCS world it means making the playoffs, winning a game or two there and have a legitimate shot at playing for a National Championship. FANS DO NOT GET EXCITED FOR ANYTHING LESS THAN THIS! Especially in the lesser world of FCS football...

The failure of Weber football attendance is based on that and nothing more. When, and if, Weber is ever to have high attendance it will be be because they start to win at the levels described. That will only happen if there is a top-notch coaching staff in place. One that can recruit and can coach-up players. One that can design, teach and operate a first rate game plan.

So the question of the hour is not whose fault it is that Weber can't attract a full stadium, but how do we win enough to accomplish the things mentioned. Nothing else will ever put butts in the seat in large numbers and on a consistent basis but wins. Yes, a big marketing campaign can fill the seats, but it is not realistic that any marketing department can do that consistently if the team does not win. So, in the meantime, the department does what they can to get people to come, but that effort is not the answer to the problem. WINNING IS THE ONLY THING THAT CREATES EXCITEMENT AND MAKES SEATS AT A GAME DESIRABLE.

So, how do we win at this level is what everyone should be focused on. Is this coaching staff up to this task if given this year + two more years to start winning 8+ games? Of course, time will tell us the answer..., but some time has already passed (1.2 seasons) and begins to give us some clues as to whether this staff can build to the desired level or not. The appropriate questions regarding this are:
1. Are they recruiting well? I believe that overall they are recruiting well except in the area of QB. They are recruiting QB's who need to be developed but they are not developing them. I don't think they have anyone on the staff capable of developing first rate QB's. If so, Billy Green would have been the starter this year. He has an adequate arm, a QB mentality, a winning background and adequate athleticism. If the QB coach had the ability to develop him so that he could complete passes at a better rate and avoid excessive turnovers he would be the starter. They didn't and he rides the pine. I believe they don't have the coach on staff to do this.
2. Is their OC capable of producing a first rate offense? From what I observe he is not. The offense is boring and predictable. The in-game play calling is unimaginative. The offense does not fit the QB talent and there is no evidence that it is going to change. If an offense isn't designed to fit the talent or recruiting doesn't bring in a QB that fits the offense it destroys everything the team is trying to do. This staff has failed in both of these areas.

I hope someone recognizes this and does something about it real soon. Otherwise, Mr. Hill will fill his 4 years and be fired. I think the rest of their coaching abilities (offensive line, receivers, running backs, defensive line, linebackers and defensive backfield) are good enough. But without a good QB, who is coached up to be great, and an offense designed to fit his skills there is no chance of winning at the level needed and no chance that attendance will improve. Thats the bottom line...

Excellent post. I agree with all of it.

In regards to tailoring the offense to the strengths of your QB I'll add this. Maybe the two most impressive conference teams this season have been Cal Poly (won in Missoula and gave ASU a game) and Portland St (beat Wazzu and then Idaho St in Pocatello). It's interesting that those two teams are 12th and 13th (last) in the conference in team passing. Both their QBs have more rushing attempts than passing attempts. The point is, they're playing to their strengths (although Poly has been doing this for years) and having success. Made me wonder why Weber isn't doing the same thing if they are determined to play Clark, who obviously is a better rusher than a passer. Clark was the starter coming out of spring ball, which should have been enough time to adjust the offense to Clark's strength of running.

And speaking of recruiting, did Weber show any interest Alex Kuresa, the PSU QB? Local kid that transferred from BYU. He's got PSU looking awfully good.

Baller loved the history lesson of wsu football !!!
Unless the address the issues that you discussed in your post and do it quickly absolutely nothing will change.

Agreed...QB play dictates offensive success. The best QB isn't playing. I like Jadrain he is a good kid with adequate passing abilities and good feet but Coach Clark isn't playing him up to his strengths. So, far the OC has Jadrian playing his weakest areas. Let the QB audible and not script every single play. We can all tell what is about to happen. Way to predictable. Leckington is also above average but is a step below right now. My pick is Billy. Not a good rushing QB but an excellent passing QB. If you aren't running the QB and only intend to use him as a passing QB then Billy is the logical choice.

Riley Bradshaw was supposedly the top guy and our future QB but is now gone. The Moapa Valley kid is on a mission and Shaw is not ready. To me, we really only have three choices. Hillinski isn't even on the coaches radar. He isn't part of the discussion. He's got a rocket of an arm but accuracy and consistency are major issues with him. It actually almost seems like Green isn't part of the equation either.

To me the issue is then OC. Maybe it is time to let Meyers take over the OC slot and call plays.

I think we can all agree on one thing, Weber is a QB away from being a very scary team. I say give someone else a shot before it's too late. Jadrian is reminding me of Jimmy Barns. If he wants to keep his spot he needs to chil out and just play the game. Quit forcing things and just have fun. Relax bro.

I agree that the OC is the problem. We need a better one who can develop the offense around a QB's skills. But we also need a QB coach who can develop a rough quarterback into a polished product. That person doesn't exist on this staff. We need such a coach as it is not likely that Weber will ever get a polished product in recruiting.

We're not panicking, according to the OC.

They’re getting 10 yards a pop and we’re getting two,” said Jadrian. “It’s not that we’re not calling the right plays or anything, we just need to execute.

I'd argue it's very much both.

We need to have a little bit more focus and a little bit more preparation. I think this week you’ll see a different offense, give you guys a show at home.

Lip service. I would argue there's been plenty enough time to prep for a half-dozen unimaginative, predicable plays.

They’ve been running that system ever since their seniors were freshmen,” said Coach Clark. “They’ve got some fifth year seniors that have been doing it over and over. You want to get that continuity and you want to get new players to do it together over and over to get those reps. Through that, hopefully, you get an offense like that.

I'm far from an expert of the game but wouldn't this apply more so to an option system like Cal Poly or Air Force? How many years does it take establish good execution of a small handful of plays, such as running between the tackles on 1st and 2nd and then throwing 3-4 yards when your looking at 3rd and 7-8? Follow that up with a 35 yard punt with little hang time. I guess occasionally, and often predictably there is a 1st or 3rd and 10 where it's thrown downfield on fly patterns. Does it really take 4 year Seniors to "hopefully" perfect an offense like that?

What's most depressing for me is that this O is looking very similar Hammer's-- predictable, boring, and lifeless. I don't want to hear Sears-like quotes with no passion, I want to hear from a coach who is pissed off at how disappointing the offense has been out of the gate, take full responsibility, and get to work correcting it. Coach Hill is right, “I don’t care who you play. We could have played the San Francisco 49ers and I would hope that we’d be better than one of 26 on third downs.” (Forget) the excuses and get these scholarship football players executing college football!

How long does it it take for a team to learn a offense?
Urban Meyer burned in the spread offense at Utah and went undefeated his second year
Urban Meyer burned in the spread offense at ohio state and went undefeated his first season
Usually turned around happen the 1st or 2nd year or they never do!!!!

I agree that during the second year there should be shown significant improvement in any offense that proves to be a good one. Weber hasn't shown that this year. And I don't think it is too early to expect to see noticeable improvement after these first two games. The offense looks worse under Clark this year than it did last year when Green was the QB. Yes, Jadrian took over and offense looked OK at the end of the season last year. But take a look at the caliber of teams that it looked ok against! Looking OK against those teams was no great feat. That is why I am saying that Hill needs to change his offensive coordinator and get a QB coach who can develop a kid.

Ouch, totally missed the boat on Alex... imagine if we had him in purple and white.

Home state schools Southern Utah, Weber State, Utah State and Utah all passed on the chance last fall to offer Kuresa an opportunity to play quarterback, a scenario he described as “definitely frustrating.”

For all the talk of recruiting local kids, and the lackluster play at the QB position last season, I can't believe Weber showed no interest in Kuresa. He might be the most prolific HS QB in state history and had a good year at Snow. Thought about posting Kuresa's stats vs our QB stats, but then I thought "what's the point of continuing to talk QBs?". It appears that Clark will never be benched, no matter how bad he is.
