PSU 76 USC 68!!!

I was very impressed with Bamba's play. He is a versatile player, even dribbling the ball up the court several times, shooting 3's, playing good defense against taller players. I didn't notice all that in the Linfield game. Winston had a horrible shooting night, I believe he was 0 for 13, otherwise PSU could have had a bigger lead. I think Gary just had an off night, most of the shots were good ones and just off by a bit. Surprised Cason, Gengler and Suarez didn't play at all. The starting five are all good offensive players, so it's tough to defend the Viks, but they are still an undersized team. I really like Tucker's game too and he is only a Sophomore! Great job Viks!

Winston was 0-12 and 1-2 from the free throw line.

If you were to have told me he'd have that off of a night and we'd come home from LA with a win, I'd have called you crazy.

Only seven guys had significant minutes, so I'd love to see big minutes from the bench against Willamette.

Great win. Hopefully down the road potential recruits will say, "oh yeah, Portland State. I saw them beat USC on the Pac 12 network."

I saw the players on the floor get enthused after Winston had to sit down. The team actually played with greater pronounced rhythm and swagger after Winston's injury and he had to sit on the bench. Winston's poor shooting seemed to have dampened the overall performance.

Bamba is a player, a warrior. Tucker has consistent shooting. And Brice has beautiful free throws. What a treat it was to watch that game on the Pac-12 Network. Shades of the 2008 Gonzaga game.

Now to get Cataldo in the mix. Footwork, strong hands and elbows, and 100 free throws a day (like Scott Morrison did his senior year).

I gotta point out that, as Scott says in his preview, USC is ranked number 10 in the Pac-12 this year. And they started three freshmen. The number of turnovers USC committed - 22? - underlines this. But I have to hand it to our team; they were terrific! It was Bamba's night.

Congratulation, great win. USC can't complain about much......you guys just whipped them good. I think if Bamba continues to play like last night he will be in the conversation for POY in the Big Sky.

I had the pleasure of attending the game in person. There is nothing more satisfying than watching your team push back every run that was in USC...just as the Trojans would inch back into it, the Vikes came up with a gut punching run. The USC players said they were playing a little too fast...as you could see on TV, the Viking defense was causing all kinds of problems for the young Trojan squad (23 turnovers to our 4...no, that is not a typo). The USC students were surprisingly arrogant to start off (given how poorly USC did last year), and continued to be so late into the game (taunting the Viking bench regularly...thankfully, no response from the team unlike last years incident at Idaho State with Moore). With a couple minutes left, they all started streaming out, heads held low. Ahh, the sweet taste of victory!

What impressed me the most was how our new guys played...Bamba, Spickerman, Tucker, White...four guys new to the world of D1. I suspect the leadership of our senior guard trio had something to do with it, but those guys can play. And there are some pretty good players who didn't even get off the bench...great to know we have depth if we need it.

Congrats to Coach G, his staff and the players! A great start to what we all hope will be another great year building on last year's momentum.

PS - Ok, why not dream...what say we get not one but two Pac 12's in a year??? Who's with me?!

Me too - I can hope with the best of you. But UO looked pretty good against Coppin State. Their bench played the last six minutes, and Coppin's no slouch.

I hope you told them, "where you going. You're missing a helluva game."

From the Los Angeles Times:

USC frustrated by turnovers in 76-68 loss to Portland State

Portland State guard DaShaun Wiggins, left, tries to hit the ball away from USC guard Malik Marquetti during the Trojans' 76-68 loss Saturday.

November 15, 2014, 10:32 p.m.Slightly more than a year ago, when Jordan McLaughlin visited USC, Trojans Coach Andy Enfield put on a video. Imagine yourself, he told McLaughlin, running this offense.

McLaughlin, then a prized recruit from Etiwanda High, did, and he liked what he imagined. With him, USC could glimpse a promising future.

That image probably didn't include Saturday's season opener at Galen Center, a 76-68 loss to Portland State of the Big Sky Conference. The season was supposed to be a step forward in Enfield's second year. That progress will have to wait.

For his first game, McLaughlin appeared with the top of his hair dyed red, and he immediately showed that USC will go as far as he can take them.

The first six offensive possessions of his career were all McLaughlin. He scored twice in that span, on a hard drive and a pull-up jumper. He had two assists and a turnover.

That became a troubling theme for USC, which finished with 23 turnovers compared with Portland State's four. McLaughlin made six of nine shots from the field with 19 points, six assists and, crucially, seven turnovers.

"He's got to learn, he's got to cut that turnovers way down," Enfield said. "But we're proud of him. He's a freshman, first game, and he'll get better."

Said McLaughlin: "We just played a little bit faster than we should've been playing. People were making moves before they caught the ball, and we just weren't making good decisions."

When the Trojans were careful with the ball, they found open looks. They shot an impressive 53.2% from the field to Portland State's 39.1%. Katin Reinhardt added 11 points, and freshman Malik Martin had 10 on five-for-seven shooting. Nikola Jovanovic, a rare veteran presence, did not perform to his potential. He had six points, seven rebounds and six more turnovers

Portland State led by as many as 12 in the first half and took a seven-point lead into the break. USC retook the lead with 11:45 remaining, but again, USC turnovers and passive defense led to extra buckets for the Vikings.

Beginning with 4:46 left in the game, Portland State went on an 8-0 run, aided by two more USC giveaways.

"You're not going to beat any team with 23 turnovers," Enfield said.

McLaughlin's commitment was always a matter of faith. At the time of the recruiting visit, Enfield hadn't yet coached a game at USC. Had McLaughlin seen a tape of last season's action, he would have watched a plodding, mismatched shell of Enfield's system.

This season, the Trojans have six new players and 11 underclassmen. They are the youngest team in the Pac-12, with three juniors and no seniors.

Youth was the likely culprit during USC's exhibition, when the Trojans trailed Cal State Los Angeles 14-1 before a comeback win. Afterward, Enfield said it was a good learning experience. The team had to figure out how to stay composed after a rough start.

It was a lesson harshly reinforced Saturday and one that USC would prefer not to learn again.

"Every night, it's not going to be easy," McLaughlin said.
