• The Wildcats have won four straight Big Sky Conference road games.
• Portland State has won two straight home games and five of the last six.

STORYLINE
Last year, the Wildcats scored the first 31 points in the game, then held off a furious Viking comeback in a 31-21 win in Ogden... the 2007 meeting at PGE Park is the highest-scoring Division I regulation football game in college history, 73-68. Amazingly, that was NOT the most points by either team in the series. Weber State earned a 74-6 win in 1965. A Mouse Davis-coached Portland State team won 75-0 in 1980. A 65-43 win by the Vikings in 2001 at PGE Park was highest-scoring game in PSU history by two teams, combined, until the 2007 contest... the Big Sky series has been very close, with the Wildcats taking a 7-6 lead last year... PSU leads the series in Portland, 8-6... Weber State comes off its first Big Sky Conference title since 1968, sharing first with Montana, but earning the automatic berth to the NCAA playoffs by winning the head-to-head meeting.

VIKINGS HOST WEBER STATE IN BIG SKY HOME OPENER
The Portland State Vikings host defending Big Sky Champion Weber State this Saturday in an important early match up of conference schools. The game opens a key stretch of footbal lfor the Vikings as they play the next two, and four of the next five games at home.

Saturday’s game with the Wildcats kicks off at 1:05 p.m. at PGE Park.

The Vikings come off a disappointing 49-17 loss at Montana last Saturday. PSU led 14-0 early, but were outplayed the rest of the way. It marked the fifth straight year PSU has lost to Montana and also the Vikings’ eighth road loss in a row overall.

Weber State opened its 2009 Big Sky Conference schedule with a convincing 44-17 win over Idaho State. The Wildcats are 1-2 overall, but nearly knocked off two FBS schools on the road in Wyoming (29-22) and Colorado State (24-23).

The 11th-ranked Wildcats are the defending Big Sky Conference champion. They shared the title with Montana last season (7-1), but earned the automatic bid to the NCAA playoffs by winning the head-to-head matchup with the Grizzlies.

The Vikings will try to end a two-game losing streak to the Wildcats.

SCOUTING WEBER STATE
Weber State is 1-2 on the season under fifth-year head coach Ron McBride. But, don’t be fooled by the record, the Wildcats are as strong as ever. The two losses came by a combined eight points to a pair of NCAA I FBS schools. WSU opened its Big Sky Conference schedule with a home win over Idaho State (44-17) last Saturday.

The 11th-ranked Wildcats boast the top returning rusher (Trevyn Smith), passer (Cameron Higgins) and receiver (Tim Toone) in the league.

Through three games, Higgins has thrown for 845 yards and eight touchdowns. He has also been intercepted seven times.

Smith leads the Big Sky with 347 rushing yards and three touchdowns.

Toone has a team-best 22 catches for 263 yards and two touchdowns. Tight end Cody Nakamura has caught 20 passes for 178 yards and four touchdowns. However, Nakamura suffered a season-ending knee injury against Idaho State last Saturday.

Weber State is averaging 416 yards of total offense and more than 35 minutes of possession per game.

On defense, the Wildcats are giving up 373 yards and 23.3 points per game - both respectable totals. The Wildcats have forced five turnovers in three games.

Middle linebacker Taylor Sedillo has 24 tackles and two tackles for loss to lead the Wildcats. Safety Jordan Brown has 22 tackles and an interception.

LAST YEAR
Weber State scored the first 31 points of the game, then held on as the Vikings rallied back in the second half. The Vikings had a failed fake punt attempt and blocked field goal in the first period, allowing the Wildcats to get off to a good start. PSU actually outgained Weber State, 473-401, but couldn’t overcome four turnovers and early mistakes. Running back Trevyn Smith rushed for 161 yards and two touchdowns for WSU. The Wildcats won, 31-21, in Ogden.

2007 AT PGE PARK: A GAME FOR THE AGES
In a marathon of offensive football, the Weber State Wildcats defeated the Portland State Vikings, 73-68, at PGE Park on Oct. 27, 2007. It was the highest scoring regulation game in NCAA history. There was also a record for most touchdowns in a game (20), while PSU QB Drew Hubel set a PSU record and tied an NCAA I FCS record with nine touchdown passes in his first career start... there were a total of 1,189 yards of offense... there were also 485 kickoff return yards on 22 returns... Hubel threw for 485 yards, while WSU QB Cameron Higgins threw for 334 yards and four touchdowns, and rushed for 106 yards and three touchdowns... WSU WR Bryant Eteuati had 341 all-purpose yards in the game... PSU’s Tremayne Kirkland and David Lewis each had four touchdowns receptions.

WEBER STATE = BIG SCORES
Portland State once beat Weber State, 75-0. That was in 1980 when a guy named Mouse Davis was the Head Coach of the Viking football program. Amazingly, that is only the fourth-highest scoring output by a Viking team in history (Davis coached the other three as well: 105, 93 and 87 - all wins, by the way).

On the other side of the ledger, Weber State has posted the two highest point totals ever against a Viking football team. The Wildcats had a 74-6 win over PSU in 1965, then a 73-68 win in 2007. That was highest-scoring, NCAA Division I regulation football game in history. Final score: Weber State 73, Portland State 68. Prior to that, the highest scoring game in Portland State history - both teams, combined - also involved Weber State. It was a 65-43 PSU victory over Weber State in 2001 at PGE Park.

SEEING DOUBLE
Don’t be confused, the rosters are correct. Both Portland State and Weber State have a safety named Jordan Brown. The Vikings’ Brown is a 6-1, 195-pound senior with 17 tackles and one interception. The Wildcats’ Brown is a 6-2, 175-pound junior with 22 tackles and one interception.

PORTLAND STATE VS. NATIONALLY-RANKED TEAMS
Portland State is 14-27 all-time against NCAA I nationally-ranked teams (since joining the Big Sky in 1996). That total includes 14-23 against FCS schools and 0-4 against FBS schools. The Vikings are 10-8 at home, 4-19 on the road. PSU is 2-6 against nationally-ranked teams under Jerry Glanville with both wins coming against Eastern Washington. Glanville is 0-2 against Montana while the Grizzlies were nationally ranked.

FACTS, FIGURES AND CURIOSITIES
THE RECORDS: Head Coach Jerry Glanville is 8-17 in his third season at Portland State, 6-5 at home, 2-13 on the road. Glanville is 2-6 against nationally-ranked opponents, 0-3 against NCAA I FBS opponents. PSU is 6-11 in Big Sky games under Glanville... Portland State is 48-52 all-time in Big Sky Conference games, 73-74 since moving to Division I in 1996.

A TOUGH ONE TO TAKE: After a brilliant start offensively and defensively against Montana, and building a 14-0 first-quarter lead, the Vikings fell flat, losing 49-17. It was PSU’s fifth straight loss to the Grizzlies and makes them just 2-12 against Montana in Big Sky play, 0-7 in Missoula.

OFF GUARD: The Vikings suffered a season-ending injury to starting offensive guard Moses Punzal. The Vikings senior broke his left ankle early in the game. SO Adam Kleffner, who was making his first career start, injured his left shoulder and is out for an undetermined time. Moving in to take over at the guard spots are RS FRs Kyle Ritt and Manuel Rojas. Ritt had started the first two games for the Vikings.

GOOD STARTS: Though Punzal will not play again for the Vikings, he leads the team with 24 consecutive starts for the Vikings. Next Saturday, SR OLB Ryan Pedersen will take team leadership with his 22nd consecutive start when the Vikings play Weber State. A handful of players started every game last year and returned to start the first three this year: SR C Tyler Staley (14), SR RT Matt Leunen (14), SR WR Aaron Woods (14), SR FB Bobby McClintock (14), JR DE Travis Beckley (14), SR DE Joe Ma'aseia (14) and SO CB DeShawn Shead (14)... Punzal has played in the most games of any current Vikings (29), followed by McClintock (26), R. Pedersen (25), Beckley (25) and JR TE Rory Richards (25).

BOBBY MAC ATTACK: The bright side of an otherwise disappointing day at Montana had to be the play of SR FB Bobby McClintock. He had 127 total yards on 16 rushes and receptions. McClintock carried nine times for 60 yards and tied a career-high seven receptions for 67 yards... McClintock leads the team with 112 rushing yards on 17 carries this season.

DOUBLE DUTY: FR WR/K Zach Brown saw a lot of action at wide receiver against Montana, making the first two catches of his career for 29 yards. He also kicked a 20-yard field goal, missed a 57-yard field goal (at the end of the first half), and had a 27-yard field goal blocked. He also averaged 66.2 yards per kickoff with two touchbacks.

PEACHFUZZ PATROL: Jerry Glanville loves to talk about how many players on his roster that don’t shave yet. Apparently that has no bearing on football ability. In the season opener, Glanville played 14 true freshmen and five redshirt freshmen. Add in five other new players who saw action, and 24 of the 53 who played at Oregon State were seeing their first playing time as Vikings. The 14 true freshmen: WR Kalua Noa, S Nathan Snow, CB Michael Williams, RB Evans Okotcha, RB Ben Bowen, CB Denzel Davis, P Thomas Duyndam, OLB Joel Sisler, S Dominic David, OLB Ryan Reardon, ILB Jaycob Shoemaker, DE Dereck Jester, WR Keitrell Anderson and DE Saui Matagiese. The five redshirt freshmen: WR/K Zach Brown, OLB Colton Russi, OL Kyle Ritt, DT Nick Gale, OL/DL David Gertson. The four other newcomers: SO K Wade Penner, SO LB Kevin Konrath, SO OL Seth Giandomenico, JR WR Nick Hutter, SO DE Carl Sommer... Sisler, Ritt and Penner were all starters at their respective positions. Williams took over as a starter at cornerback against Southern Oregon, while Brown was given exclusive duties as the Viking kicker... RS FR OL Manuel Rojas played against Southern Oregon, and RS FR Andrew Godinet played at Montana giving the Vikings 21 freshman on the roster that have now seen action... WR Keitrell Anderson became the fourth freshman to earn a starting role when he took over that responsibility at Montana.

REVERSAL OF FORTUNE: Portland State was sacked 41 times last season - at least twice in each game - and ranked 116th in the nation in sacks allowed. The Vikings were sacked 50 times two years ago. So far this season, the Vikings have allowed just one sack in three games (and 119 pass attempts). PSU did not allow sacks against Oregon State or Montana. The Vikings rank fourth in the nation in fewest sacks allowed.

EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND: JR WR Raymond Fry III had six catches for 76 yards at Montana. He leads the Vikings with 19 catches for 303 yards this season. He also leads the Big Sky Conference with 101 receiving yards per game... Fry set career highs for catches and yards in the first half against Oregon State on Sept. 5. He finished with 10 receptions for 146 yards in the game.

SWERVIN’ KIRVEN: SR WR Lavonte Kirven had 36 catches for 469 yards and three TDs last year, but had never had a 100-yard game. Against Southern Oregon, Kirven had three catches for 140 yards and two TDs, including a 91-yard reception in the first period... Kirven added a team-high 97 receiving yards and a touchdown on four catches at Montana... he now has a team-high three touchdowns and is averaging 29 yards per catch this season.

HUBEL LIKES IT AT HOME: One good reason for the Vikings to have six home games is the performance of JR QB Drew Hubel at PGE Park. Despite two interceptions, Hubel had another big performance at home in the opener. He completed 14 of 23 passes for 370 yards and four touchdowns against Southern Oregon... in eight career games at PGE Park (six starts), Hubel has completed 210-349 passes (.601) for 2,994 yards, 27 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. He averages 374 yards per game and has passing games of 623, 484, 474, 370, 343 and 305 yards, as well as games of nine touchdowns and five touchdowns. He has won Big Sky Player of the Week honors three times in six starts at PGE Park... Hubel’s first career start came against Weber State two years ago when he threw for 484 yards and a national-record tying nine touchdowns.

HUBEL RUNS THE 5K: JR QB Drew Hubel has moved into ninth place on PSU’s all-time passing list with 5,329 yards. He passed Kyle Allen (1994-95) during the game at Oregon State. Next up? Former Division II All-American John Charles (1992-93), who had 5,563 passing yards in his career and ranks eighth in PSU history.

ALL-PURPOSE AARON: With 141 all-purpose yards at Montana, SR WR/KR Aaron Woods now has 441 APY this year. He has jumped all the way from 10th to third in career kickoff return yards (1,185) at Portland State. Woods set a school record with 908 kickoff return yards last season.

QUICK DEFENSIVE NOTES: After making 11 tackles for loss against Southern Oregon, Portland State had just four at Montana... SR ILB Erik Pedersen continues to lead the Vikings on defense, making 10 tackles at Montana. He has a team-best 25 on the the season... his running mate, SO ILB Ryan Rau had the only sack of the game and made a career-high eight tackles for the Vikings... SO CB DeShawn Shead picked off his seventh career pass.

SOME SNAFUS: Portland State was hurt by some special teams snafus at Montana. The biggest was a wild long snap on a punt attempt that resulted in a Griz fumble recovery for touchdown. With the Vikings down 35-17 early in the third period, a much-needed 27-yard field goal attempt was blocked... the Vikings also commited four turnovers against Montana and have 10 in the last two games... nine penalties for 100 yards were also season highs.

FILLING BIG SHOES: When PSU lost SR ILB Andy Schantz to graduation last season the Vikings knew it would be tough to replace their top defensive player, an All-Conference selection and the team leader on all fronts. But, on the field, SO ILB Ryan Rau has filled in admirably through the first three games. Rau has 19 tackles, team-highs of four tackles for loss and two sacks and a pass breakup.

LONE STAR LEGACY: Viking Head Coach Jerry Glanville spent some quality time in the state of Texas as an NFL defensive coordinator and head coach for the Houston Oilers (remember them?). That time has translated into some quality recruiting at Portland State. Seven members of the Viking team are from the state of Texas, and at one point in the second half against Oregon State, all four defensive backs in the game were from Texas, including three true freshmen: SO SS Cody Worthen, FR FS Nathan Snow, FR CB Michael Williams, FR CB Denzel Davis.... Williams has now joined Worthen in the starting lineup... Worthen and Snow were high school teammates at Clear Lake in the Houston area... another true freshman, RB Evans Okotcha from Dallas, leads the Vikings with 19 rushing plays this season.

LEADERS OF THE PACK: Portland State leads the Big Sky in passing (324.3), sacks (6), fewest sacks allowed (1) and tackles for loss (6.67 per game)... JR QB Drew Hubel leads the conference in passing (316.3), while JR WR Ray Fry leads the league in receiving yards per game (101.0).

INJURIES: RS FR OLB Colton Russi (knee) and SR OG Moses Punzal (ankle) will miss the rest of the season. They join SR QB Tygue Howland (knee), SR WR Mario D'Ambrosio (knee), JR S Michael Almond (knee), FR S Justin Lilley (knee), and FR OL Mitch Gaulke (ankle) who are out for the year with injuries... SO OG Adam Kleffner may miss the rest of the season as well, but the extent of his shoulder injury has yet to be determined.

2009 SEASON HIGHLIGHT REEL
FAST START FOR FRY: JR WR Ray Fry opened the season with his best game as a Viking. Fry compiled a career-high of 10 receptions for 146 yards against Oregon State (9/5).

COMING OUT PARTY: Head Coach Jerry Glanville played 14 true freshman and five redshirt freshmen in the opener at Oregon State (9/5). With five other newcomers playing, PSU had 23 new players on the field against the Beavers.

CHICKS DIG THE LONG BALL: Portland State scored six times against Southern Oregon in the home opener (9/12), a 34-10 win. All six scores came from 42 yards or longer. JR QB Drew Hubel threw touchdown passes of 96, 91, 42 and 75 yards. FR K Zach Brown hit on field goals from 52 and 46 yards. Brown’s 52-yarder was the longest by a Viking in 22 years and he earned Big Sky Conference Special Teams Player of the Week honors.
