Appalachian State starts 2007 at No. 1
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Two-time defending national champion Appalachian State was a near unanimous choice for the top spot in The Sports Network's preseason FCS Top-25 poll announced on Tuesday.

The Mountaineers received 67 of 71 first-place votes and 1,771 points. Appalachian State, which is attempting to win an unprecedented third consecutive national crown, was placed second on the other four ballots.

ASU also began the 2006 season ranked No. 1.

Montana placed second in the season-opening poll and drew three first-place votes. The Grizzlies, semifinalist a year ago in the national playoffs, were ranked sixth or higher on all ballots and received 35 second-place votes for 1,680 points.

Joining Appalachian State and Montana in the top five were last year's national runner-up Massachusetts in third place, North Dakota State in fourth and Youngstown State, a semifinalist last season, in fifth.

All of the teams in the top five finished the 2006 season also ranked in the top five. Appalachian State ended 2006 ranked No. 1, followed by UMass, Montana, Youngstown State and North Dakota State.

New Hampshire, which has made the quarterfinals in each of the past three years, received the only other first-place ballot and was sixth overall with 1,393 points. New Hampshire also finished sixth last season.

Completing the top-10 are Illinois State, James Madison, Northern Iowa and McNeese State. Furman missed cracking the top 10 by just one point.

Following Furman at No. 12 is Southern Illinois, while Portland State and new coach Jerry Glanville come in ranked 13th. Others in the top 20 include No. 14 Wofford, No. 15 Cal Poly, No. 16 Hampton, No. 17 Eastern Illinois, No. 18 Sam Houston State, No. 19 Delaware and No. 20 South Dakota State.

Completing the poll are Montana State at 21, Tennessee-Martin, Coastal Carolina, Yale and South Carolina State.

The Colonial Athletic Association, in its first year replacing the Atlantic 10 in sponsoring football, placed three teams (UMass, New Hampshire and James Madison) in the top 10 and four in the top 20 (Delaware). The Gateway Football Conference also had three teams in the top 10 (Youngstown State, Illinois State and Northern Iowa) and four in the top 12 (Southern Illinois).

The Southern Conference had three teams in the top 14 (Appalachian State, Furman and Wofford), while the Great West Conference managed to put three teams in the top 20 (North Dakota State, Cal Poly and South Dakota State). Where do you all think PSU would be ranked if Walsh were still the coach? I'd love to know how JG is impacting these polls. My guess is that PSU would be ranked a couple of spots lower in each poll if Walsh were still here.

Viking Football Ranked 13th In Preseason Poll

The Portland State football team opens the season ranked 13th in the Sports Network Preseason Poll. The Vikings move up from a ranking of 19th at the conclusion of last season.

PSU spent the entire 2006 season ranked in the national poll, ranked anywhere from 13th to 25th. The Vikings finished 7-4, 6-2 in the Big Sky Conference. The Vikings return 40 letterwinners, including nine starters to the 2007 team. New Head Coach Jerry Glanville has taken over the program.

Portland State will face three teams in the preseason Top 25, including 10th-ranked McNeese State in the season opener on Sept. 1. PSU also plays second-ranked Montana on Nov. 3, and 21st-ranked Montana State on Nov. 10. Other opponents, Northern Arizona and UC Davis, were among those also receiving votes.

Two-time defending national champion Appalachian State is ranked number one in the poll.

OGDEN, Utah (Aug. 14, 2007) - The University of Montana will begin the 2007 season ranked second in the Sports Network Football Championship Subdivision preseason poll, which was released on Tuesday.

Montana is one of three Big Sky Conference teams ranked in the top 25. Jerry Glanville’s Portland State Vikings are ranked 13th, and Rob Ash’s Montana State Bobcats are ranked 21st.

Bobby Hauck’s Montana Grizzlies received three first-place votes and 1,680 points in votes placed by media and sports information directors. The Grizzlies, who have won or shared nine straight Big Sky Conference titles and are the preseason conference favorite, finished 12-2 in 2006. Montana advanced to the playoffs for a record 14th straight season, losing in the semifinals to Massachusetts. Montana opens at home Sept. 1 against Southern Utah.

Portland State finished 7-4 in 2006, just missing out on an at-large bid to the playoffs. The Glanville era will begin on Sept. 1 with a huge non-conference road game at No. 10 McNeese State in Lake Charles, La. The Vikings earned 866 points.

Montana State, which advanced to the quarterfinals and finished 8-5, earned 332 points to check in at No. 21. The Bobcats were ranked 10th in the final 2006 poll. Ash’s first game at the helm of the Bobcats is Sept. 1 at Texas A&M.

A fourth Big Sky team - Northern Arizona - earned 58 points, ninth most among teams not in the top 25.
