PSU vs Cal Information

So what style of O and D do the Vikings play?

You'll probably see PSU in a 4-3 D front. Great line that goes about eight guys deep.

Spread for the offense.
Hm. that should be interesting as our D practices against the Spread.
It's caused some problems over the years, but we've been getting better.

How aggressive is the D? Do they go man often in the back or go zone?
And their speed?

Sounds like (from the little bit I've read so far) that your D-line is the soul
of the team this year. That should be interesting going up against our
relatively inexperienced OL and our stable of RBs. We actually also
have a pretty decent set of FBs as well, but they're playing a lot less
due to our increased use of the Spread.

We've also had a pretty good and deep D line going into the season, but it's already
banged up.

Your OL looks pretty big.

You'll see a combo of man and cover two for the secondary assignments. The speed on defense that I thought may be a concern this year seems to not be a concern at all. We have some LBs that were 'unproven' coming into the year that are stepping up big.

Our O line is on par with our D line. With our starting tailback going down prior to the season opener this year, our rushing is not what it usually is, so it's a little mis-leading. The fact that we've not allowed a sack this year shows their talent.

So what is your take on the two Cal games? Two ends of the spectrum with the UT and UM games...

We stunk up the stadium at Tennessee, and there is absolutely no excuse for our performance. Tennessee is a great program, and they were well prepared and sky high for us. They played tough, determined football, and we simply didn't perform to our ability. Oh yeah, Neyland Stadium is something to be seen to be believed.

Minnesota was a different matter. The Gophers are a good ball club, as they went to 5 straight bowls in the previous 5 seasons. However, our players and coaches were embarrassed by their poor performance at Tennessee, so the guys were out for blood. The Gophers were in the wrong place, at the wrong time...

Bottom line is Tennessee took us to the woodshed, and showed us what SEC football (including fans, stadium and game day atmosphere) is all about. Minnesota is in a rebuilding year, and they came to town when our pride was hurting. I believe we are closer to the team that beat a decent Minnesota squad, than the one that laid an egg in Knoxville. Time will tell; that's why we play the games.
