PSU vs. Cal State Fullerton

I didn't see a game thread for the bracketbuster contest, so here you go. Any thoughts on this weekend's Big West opponent?

I'm not a fan of the bracket buster game...

That being said....

Let's speculate. Lets say that PSU wins the rest of their games, but loses the BSC title game. That would put us at 23-9, but not getting the auto bid to the Big Dance. With the low RPI, the NCAA would not be possible most likely, but NIT?

Would 23-9 get us into the NIT?

If we're conference champs it doesn't matter what our record is, we go to the NIT. At least that's how I understand it. If the NIT had the same rules in 2005, Portland St. would have gone to it's tournament.

Think positive! Think BSC tourney champs!

Thanks for the information on the NIT. I recall thinking in 2005 that we got the shaft, good to know about the regular season conference championship information.

Vik Thunder, I'm on board with that. It's BSC Tourney title or bust in my mind. :-)

Men's basketball preview
By: The Vanguard
Issue date: 2/22/08 Section: Sports

When: 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 23
What: Portland State (18-8, 11-2 BSC) at Cal State Fullerton (17-7, 10-3 BWC)
Where: Titan Gym in Fullerton, Calif.
On air: 910AM KTRO (radio)

Probable starters:

Portland State
G Jeremiah Dominguez
G Andre Murray
C Scott Morrison
F Deonte Huff
F Kyle Coston

Cal State Fullerton
G Ray Reed
G Josh Akognon
F Scott Cutley
F Marcus Morgan
F Frank Robinson

Stars: On average, junior guard Josh Akognon puts up 20 points a game for the Titans and is only five three-point field goals short of setting a new single-season school record. Junior point guard Jeremiah Dominguez leads the Big Sky in steals per game (two), free-throw percentage (.846) and three-point field goals made per game (2.46).

Just a Taste: Both the Vikings and Titans are at or near the top of their respective conferences. Portland State has already clinched at least a tie in the Big Sky regular-season championship, whereas the Titans are tied for first place in the Big West. After defeating Northern Colorado Wednesday night, the Vikings look to extend their school-record winning streak to 10 games. The Titans have won seven of their last eight games.

What a win tonight could do is push the Vikings up to a potential 15 or 14 seed in the NCAAs rather than a 16, give them a bit more of a chance if they make it. Right now PSU's RPI is 111 and Fullerton's is 97. A win would be PSU's third over a top 100 team (IUPUI 86, Akron 91). This would be key considering that PSU's remaining games (in the regular season) are against #189 Montana St, #239 Montana and #282 EWU.

If we were gonna lose one then this was the one to lose. Hopefully it will remind the guys to focus and finish strong.

The only good from this game was 2 things. 1, Thomas and Lucas received much needed playing time and 2, the Viks get a home game against CSF next year, otherwise this game was a pain.

any injuries last eve?
good to hear thomas is back.
what about hammond?
I'm happy Julius is healthy again, and back. He's a very nice young man, and a tremendous athlete. An even better football player than basketball, from what I hear.

The only problem with Julius being back is that Bone will probably now want to play him more than he should. With Julius out, Bone was forced to play Scott more, and this team plays far better when Scott plays 28 to 32 min. He's the horse that will carry Bone to the dance, but Bone's not smart enough to realize it, imo. Bone will start thinking about playing his "small ball" again, and the team will suffer. Julius should only play about 6 minutes a game this year, giving Scott breaks about every 5 minutes.

Julius is not even a 5, never has been, and doesn't even like the position. He did an admirable job filling in at the spot last year, when there was no back-up post the first part of the season. If Bone wants to play Julius, he should put him in at 4, although I think Tyrell gives the team more options than Julius (with his rebounding, 3 pt. shooting, and passing).

Hopefully Bone can see what's been staring him in the face for 2 or more years now. Although I doubt it.

I think that Bone did exactly what he should have done with this game.

None of the starters played over 25 minutes and the bench had plenty of minutes to go around.

This game wasn't a step in our goal of winning the BSC tourney and should be eliminated from the minds of the coaches and players as soon as possible.

If Bone is a good coach, he'll keep the same rotation that has been plowing through the Big Sky even though it appears that we have everyone back. Scott needs to see 30 per game, and Moore needs to see 4-7 to give him a break.

Marty: You're right about the CSF game. I was just referring to the fact that when injuries forced Bone to shorten his bench, it limited Bone's opportunities to screw it up.

You said the big "if", and I agree. We all know what needs to be done, but I'm pretty sure Bone doesn't see it, even though it's as plain as the nose on his face. We'll see. I hope I'm wrong, but I've seen it for 2 years now, and listening to Bone, I don't think he gets your point. I don't expect much from a Coach who doesn't talk to his players and doesn't coach them.

Anyways, I'll see y'all for Seniors night, and I've got my hotel room booked for the 11th and 12th. Just hoping Bone doesn't screw it up.

GO VIKS !!
