PSU vs. Montana

If the Vikings don't win this, we can essentially call Montana the regular-season champs.

PSU pretty much needs to sweep the Lady Griz to have a chance at hosting the tournament because, if they both finish 15-1, Montana will win the RPI tiebreaker. Since they won their first 6 Big Sky games by an average of 20 points, I definitely don't see UM losing to anyone other than Portland State.

I just checked season stats to date and men are averaging 1055 attendance to women's paltry 450, come on now, I think the women who are 6-0 in conference have earned some more fan support :D I'm sure they would appreciate it esp. playing Montana!

I'm hoping we can muster a big crowd for the women. Unfortunately, it conflicts with the men's game. They should broadcast the men's game on the Lobby TV so people can keep up with both games.

That would be too awesome of an idea lol

PSU VS. MONTANA SERIES NOTES
• Montana has a 36-8 lead in the series, including a 15-5 lead in games in Portland.

PSU VS. MONTANA STATE SERIES NOTES
• Montana State has a 25-15 lead in the series and is 11-8 against the Viks all-time in Portland.

Ugly! I hope the Vikings can serve up some payback this weekend!

why couldn't they show the men's game on a monitor in the lobby??? just need internet, right, and a monitor; kind of a no-brainer if you ask me...of course we want people in the stands not in the lobby ;)

PSU topples Montana in battle of Big Sky women's titans

What a game! Great strategy, letting Morales have her 34 while holding all the others to 6 and under. We had 3 players with more than 12. Another telling story - we had 17 assists to their 7. Great team play. We also did well on turnovers too. A reminder to the Montana team that basketall is above all a team game. They'll no doubt throw it back at us in Missoula. Still, it's nice to know we have an answer to the so-called "bigs"; dePaepe and Courtney did well in the paint, backed up by Kahle. Now for Montana State.

Huh?

I don't think that was the strategy. PSU was doubling Morales as often as they could get away with, it was just that the others couldn't hit their open shots (Morales was 15-27, the rest were 11-37). And since when does Montana not understand it's a team game? Rogers & Ena are also averaging double figures for the Lady Griz. Morales is far from a selfish player & the Lady Griz did not get all those accolades over the years by selfish play.

I see that's what the PSU team said the gameplan was on defense (let Morales score & deny the others). That's not really what I saw though. Morales was pressured & doubled a fair amount and the other Lady Griz had many open shots, they just didn't hit them. Besides, I don't know why you would want to do that anyway. Why would you ease up on the person that you know can make shots? Wouldn't it make more sense to ease up on the less consistent players or the players that are more about passing than shooting (like Nance-Johnson)? The Vikings did a nice job denying the good post passes, but it really didn't look like they "let" Morales have anything; she just made tough jumpers & post-up shots inside the arc.

Watch out for Montana State. They aren't playing well now, but they can score it and keep in mind that they swept PSU last year.

did you see the great job they did on rogers? she didn't get many open looks. sure morales attracted some doubles but they didn't come off of rogers, lohman and ena. they came off of others who were not that big of a threat. whatever the case, the lady vikings had lockdown defense and we should praise them not pick apart their strategy...they won. the 1,400 that showed up did a great job of supporting.

Not to sound cold, but Morales needed a couple of good hard fouls to get her out of her groove. When I say good hard foul, I mean hard body foul, end up on the hardwood, zero chance for a follow up put back, and you're going to earn your points from the foul line. She's really good at that little right handed runner and if it didn't go in, she'd go right to where the rebound was and put it back for a layup. Hell, with the way the officials were calling the game, a hard foul may not have even been called. Apparently it's not a foul to hit Claire in the face and knock her down when she's attempting a three pointer.

That was a lot of fun last night. It was my first ladies game of the season (I blame Big Sky TV), and a great crowd showed up to support. Too bad the men came up a little short and prevented the UM sweep last night.

I love watching UM people silently walk out of the Stott with their heads down. There is nothing better.

Just for the record, I'm not a PSU fan, I'm a UM fan.

PSU did do a pretty good job on Rogers, but Rogers missed several open shots too. If Montana had hit their open threes in the second half, the game could have ended very differently. Unfortunately, most of those threes weren't even close to going in.

It was a great win for PSU, and they definitely played better than Montana last night, but it didn't decide anything yet. Both teams still "control their own destiny" (as the oxymoronic cliche goes) for hosting the Big Sky Tournament. I'm more upset that this loss may have prevented a winnable first round NCAA game for the Lady Griz should they get there. The women's tournament committee has a real habit of screwing mid-majors.

The officiating. I guess it was called even, but those three have no business officiating ncaa basketball.
