PSU vs MSU

Should be another tough Big Sky Conference game tonight. Every win and/or loss in conference play is huge as I don't see any team pulling away. Hope we don't come out flat after the Montana game.

Excellent win tonight, although I wish PSU had put MSU away a little earlier after having a 16 point lead. First place in the conference! /users/31/07/37/smiles/595146.gif

The Viks got sloppy at the end, better not do that too often. Huff broke the legendary Freeman Williams' single game free throw record, going 17 for 17. The old record was 16 for 16. Dominguez had a rough 1st half, but was back to his old ways in the 2nd half. Morrison is coming on strong, but still is missing too many free throws. 1st place is hard too complain about, but a lot of games left in conference play. Don't lose the fire Viks in the 2nd half of conference play!

First place!

Free throws were great this weekend against the Montana schools. Bad news about Thomas being out with a broken rib. :-( Moore stepped up with some quality minutes to give Scott some rest.

We were not as sharp as we could be tonight, but had more talent and effort to get the win. Ugly last five minutes of the game.

I agree about Moore's performance this week. Early in the season, I dreaded seeing him come into the game. Now, with the way he played this week, I'm confident he can hold his own while giving Morrison a rest.

This was a great win. Huff, Morrison, and Dominguez played like leaders. I feel that us and Montana State will be the two teams playing for the Big Sky championship. We need to hold home court advantage going into that type of game.

I'm not. On any other night, PSU would have taken Weber at home, which in my mind shows that they're not that strong this year. I agree with MacVik, but (after PSU) my votes go to MSU and NAU as the next best - and I still don't count Montana out yet.

The Bobcats are 7-7 in conference play after falling to Weber State on Saturday, and have yet to clinch a berth in the six-team Big Sky Tournament. The Vikings lost in a non-conference game at California State Fullerton Saturday, and need one conference win to ensure their right to host the Big Sky Tournament. Portland State defeated the Bobcats 96-85 in Portland on Feb. 2.

Viks Look To Clinch In Bozeman, Again

Three years and four days ago, the Portland State Vikings found themselves in almost exactly the same position they are in today.

Heading into the final week of 2005 the Vikings had established themselves as the Big Sky's best team and all but locked up the right to host the conference tournament. When they headed to Bozeman to play Montana State they were coming off a blowout loss to a non-conference BracketBuster opponent (Middle Tennessee) that ended a long win streak (six games).

This year as they prepare to face the Bobcats (15-12, 7-7) in Bozeman they are again on the verge of clinching and again are coming off another blowout BracketBuster loss (to Cal State Fullerton) that ended another long win streak (nine games).

In 2005, the Vikings prevailed 88-82 in an epic overtime game thanks to the late heroics of junior Jake Schroeder.

Will history repeat itself tonight? Can the Vikings wrap up the conference title and the right to host?

While all the Viking players seem to have their eyes squarely set on the looming conference tournament, coach Ken Bone is locked in on Thursday night's opponent.

"We just need to tie this thing up and finish the regular season on the right note," he said. "It would be a shame if we didn't finish the job the way we started."

To that end, the themes of the final practice before the team hit the road were aggressiveness and taking care of the ball.

With their 11-2 conference record, the Vikings have seemingly proven that their "A" game is better than the "A" games of their Big Sky competitors. Yet they have also at times been inconsistent and let sloppy or lethargic play help their opponents.

Junior guard Andre Murray said the team knows there is no room to mess around.

"We've got to stay focused," he said. "Yeah, we had a little nine-game win streak. "That's over with now. There's nothing guaranteed. We've got to keep practicing and practicing and hopefully, if we outwork (our opponents), we can get there."

Murray said Saturday's 85-69 loss to Cal State Fullerton served as a good reminder of just that.

"It showed that you can get beat on any given day, so you've go to bring you're "A" game," he said.

Despite the lopsided loss, Bone thought his team showed some positives in the non-conference loss.

"It could have been worse, it really could have been," he said. "I thought our guys scraped and competed at a high level."

A little more scraping and the Vikings can move to polishing, as in their Big Sky Regular Season Championship rings.

NOTES: Freshman Justynn Hammond missed practice this week with the flu and was doubtful to travel with the team.

(Ed. Note: In the latest Power Rankings, I'd mistakenly said Montana State had dropped two home games last week, both losses were on the road)
