Purple and White game

Davion Berry is going to be really good for us in the future. Shoots lights out, and can finish at the rim. Every time I've seen him play he stands out.

Fields I thought played well tonight.

Bamforth was shooting lights out.

Lillard had a monsterous dunk near expiration.

The last 5 minutes was our starting lineup, Lillard, Bamforth, Bullinger, Fulton, Mahoney

Otis is shifty around the basket, but his free throws look like F. Session !

I thought I would share what I think about the game last night since I am an expert on evaluating Weber State basketball. ha ha. Im so glad the had the men play first. No offense to the ladies team, but since I had my 3 year old there it was nice to be able to leave when the men game was over. I really like what they did to the parking lot. My only gripe is they got rid of the vicorty tree. We need to find a new place to park and think of a new name and have a ceremonial dew drink to anoint it . ha ha. Anyway, back to the game....

I have been folowing Weber State hoops very close since the 2000 season and I can honestly say this is the best team I have seen. The only weaknes I can think of and its a small one is depth at the small forward. I don't even think that is going to be an issue anyway, but if I had to pick something that would be it.

Lillard: He looked really good, but could tell he was pressing. Not his best game, but he will be fine and be the MVP we all no him to be.

Bamforth: WOW!!!! I was most impressed with him. With all the attention Lillard will get this year he should have lots of good looks. If he gets his feet set and a little space. FORGET ABOUT IT!!!!! Im going on a limb and saying he is the best shooter we have had since I have followed the team. He is so smart and has a great feel. He is a great leader too.

Bull: He did the usual. Nothing really jumped out, but he doesn't need to prove anything. He looks great physically. With his size and skills he is going to be a tough match up for other small forwards. He has that look in his eye. The eye of the tiger. lol.

Fulton: He looks a little quicker and stronger to me. He was one of the main 5 that ended the scrimage so Im assuming he will start at the 4. Love his offensive game. He will do well for us this year.

Mahoney: Same old same old here too. Like Bull he is just overall a heady player. He didn't do anything that surprised me last night, but he looks healthy and ready to go. He is the guy your so happy he plays for you even though he is not the star of the team.

Berry: He really stood out to me out of all the new guys. Great offensive player. Athletic, can drive to the hole and finish with either hand. He was 4-5 from down town and they were not easy looks. He should start at the 3 next year when Bull graduates.

Otis: He is quicker that I would have thought. He is not as good as Fulton is on offense, but is tough down low and will help lots on defense. I wonder if he might play some 3, but not sure. He will be one of the first guys off the bench.

Tres: He looks great too. He really stood out to me as well. He looks like has has gained some muscle and looks quicker. I thought he might start at the 5 and Mohoney at the 4, but looks like he will be the first big guy off the bench. He had some good offesive moves and looked confident. He will start for us the next 2 years and could be the best center in the Big Sky his JR and SR years.

Fields, Wheelright, and Brown: They all looked good at times and looked like Freshmen at times too. I thought Fields stood out the most of the Freshman. He is taller than I would have though. My guess and its is just that is he will play and Brown and Wheelright will redshirt. Someone needs to take Fields to Chuck O Rama a couple times a week though. ha ha. He is so skinny. I think all of them will be great players and they all have lots of talent. Rahe has done a great job recruiting.

Too bad Richardson and Hajek didn't play. I expect Richardson to have a good year backing up Lillard and Bam Bam and Hajek I hope can give them good minutes because the way the BIg Sky refs call fouls we will probably need him to play some.

Weber State has a great team this year. Its going to be so fun to watch them play. I can't wait. WEBER STATE WEBER STATE GREAT GREAT GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 Berry was a great addition by Rahe. I know I was being a doubting Thomas earlier in the Summer when Rahe offered him a scholarship, and brought him in. But since then, I have seen the light. Both times I have seen him play, I have come away from the game in awe of his skills. The guy can flat out play. He has a killer outside shot, and due to his size, is deceptively quick. He can get to the rim and knows how to finish. My favorite attribute of Berry though is his ability to see the court. He is an excellent passer, and knows how to put his team-mates in favorable positions on the court. At first, and I still kinda am, was sad he had to sit out this season, but with Bull graduating at the end of the year, it'll be great knowing that the Cats lose very little at the SF position, and will have another really solid athlete taking over.

I thought the three Freshmen did well. Each had their moments. Fields looked a little lost a couple of times, but that is to be expected with the number of sets the Wizard runs. Even though he was, he got a lot of help from teammates, and looked like an automatic offensive asset. He needs to clean up his game on the defensive side of the court, but for a Fresh, I really liked where he is at right now. Fields had some nice looks at the basket and made the most of those looks. He has a nice outside game, and knows how to get to the rim.

Gelaun is quick, and fairly solid on defense. He did a good job guarding Lillard. To me he seemed a bit rough offensively, but out of the three, he knew the sets the best and was the most ready to play right away. His offense will come. He did have a nice drive for a bucket. Personally, since the Cats have Lillard, Bam, and Richardson, it probably would be best for Wheelright to sit this year, to give him more PT in the future, and help smooth out the rough edges a bit more, but that would be a lot to ask any athlete.

Brown, well, he is a hard-nosed player. He comes ready to go and wont quit. He isn't anywhere close to being polished, but I really liked his defensive abilities. We all know he will produce on the offensive end eventually. Last night he gave us a slight preview of what we, as Weber fans, will see in the future.

Overall, I was really happy with the freshmen's defensive play last night. As fresh, you'd expect them to get blown away by the starters and upperclassmen, but not this group. The will challenge anyone. I like their confidence, lets just hope it doesn't get out of hand.

Poor Van Pelt...Lillard posterized him!! That was definitely a sick dunk.

Wazzu...

Don't worry about the tree. There was some discussion last night between bengelhater, Flylikeasparrow, and Skills about the new victory tree.

A. We could change it to the victory light pole (bengalhater)
B. We could have it in the same spot, I really think the purple circles are still out there, If not, we know where it is.
C. Or we create a new tree. By the USU game, I'm thinking we will figure it out.

What do you think? As a long-time participant, your feedback would be much appreciated. If you have another idea, that would work too.

As for the P & W game....Hajek and Richardson being out was somewhat of a bummer. I think, Richardson is out with a bum ankle, but and I haven't heard for sure, but should be back by the 11. Hajek is having some back issues. I don't know how long this will limit his play. I hope he is ready to go by the start of the season. When I saw him play in late August, he looked solid. I thought he and Tresnak were practically at the same level. Both were playing great. It was fun watching them compete against each other. They really do a good job of pushing each other and developing their games.

As for the Weakness, if there is one, I'd agree. It is definitely the lack of depth at the 3. I figure that Shai won't redshirt, because he can play the 1, 2, or 3 positions. Bull, of course, will probably get 30+ a game, but you need someone to back him up. Next year Davion Berry and Kyndahl Hill will both be playing the 3 for Rahe and the Cats.

It's looking like this will be a magical year for the Cats. I'm pretty excited.

I am ok with our depth at wing because Bull is going to play huge minutes, and Fields will be right behind him thrown into the fire just like Lillard in 08.

thanks for your update on the P&W. gonna be fun season.

one thing that bam does great is he doesn't force his 3's. if he is open he shoots. if he is not he passes. not making bad decisions, being healthier than last yr and having DI experience he can only improve.

i really like fulton. if he improves every yr he will be a great player. personally i would like to see him starting since he could be a 3 yr starter. no offense to the others and otis especially having not seen them play. i just like fulton's potential after what i saw last yr.

trez & hajek we need healthy. even as backups they are very important to our team. we need their size and rebounding abilities. and you made a great point about how big sky refs are foul happy so all our bigs should have plenty of opportunities for minutes. starting shouldn't matter.

most important of all which as far as i have seen over the rahe era that hasn't been an issue is team chemistry. if the team can play well together as we have seen over the yrs they really can be the team we are all hoping they are. i hope we can fill the place for our first DI home game.

How about the Victory Wildcat Statue? Everyone knows where it is and it will help this tradition grow.

As for the game, I agree with the comments made thus far. I would just add that I was most impressed last night by two players: Bamforth and Fields. The next few years will be very special and we should enjoy them.

I just wish someone would have taken that tree and planted it in their yard. If i owned a home with a yard I would have totally done that.

I wouldn't be so quick to pick who may or may not red shirt, based on the Purple/White game. From recent history, I can tell you that the 5th guard is not going to be chosen based on scoring or flashy athleticism. That decision will be based on who plays the most consistent defense and makes the fewest mistakes. It will be based on every drill, situation simulation, and scrimage of every practice leading up to the exhibition games. I would venture a guess, but I have only seen two practices and the P/W game. The other thing that can impact this decision is injuries. I believe that Bull's red shirt hinged on a sprained ankle that would have had an impact on just a few weeks to begin his first season. Some players may prefer red shirting to playing in the 5th guard position.

If you think there is a log jam at guard, this year, wait till next year. The only guard we lose is Bull.

Uh...Old...Bull is a Small Forward.

Also, I was under the impression that Bull had a broken foot that side lined him his freshman year.
